I suppose no one seems to care about my initial concerns

I share your concerns. I haven't seen anything to get me excited for ME:A. Whatever I have seen is disappointing. I don't care how articulate the Asari's face is, she looks like Chris Farley.

I do that extensively in the video, and I really do think we are not a gross minority here.

Had there been not a SINGLE PERSON who agreed with my assessment then I'd let it die...but that's simply not the case.

Mostly, that came across as vague babble, though that might have just been me getting bored with the vid. (edit: guess that makes me one of the guys Cyonan's talking about; propaganda doesn't hold my interest long enoug to deliver the message.) The people agreeing are just posting their feelings rather than the reasons.

You seem to be more articulate in this format; could you maybe put up a couple of the key points? What is the soul of Mass Effect, to you?

Something worth noting for everybody here:

If you're going to post a video you should summarize the main points from it in the OP(or post in which you link to the video). I get that people want to push their YouTube channels and as long as it's Mass Effect related It's all good, but many of us wont watch videos for whatever reason.

You don't really cover any of those points in the OP that Alan is talking about, even if they are in the video.

You are correct, this is my oversight. I will do so now.

Spoiler

Nevertheless, it might be fun. Therefore I am eager to see long, 15 plus minutes gameplay-oriented videos like the ones we had seen for DAI over a year before release. If they put Mike Laidlaw to promote the whole thing, I might even pre-order it. He has got me twice into pre-ordering Bioware games.

You know, i wouldn't be surprised if he was Salarian.

If they make a game and make one of the ME 3 endings canon, this ppl complaining right now will be complaining anyway. They arey complainers they like to complain.

Like someone else say ppl complain  for the whole reason of complain. Is more if this E3 presentation, show us a 20m gameplay that spoil alot of the story they will complain.

Spoiler

Another interview, there is a point on the video where he say ppl now said that the Mako was ok, but back them ppl complain hard about the Mako on ME1, and i remember that on the forums.

PPl do this just bc they can

You make it sound like we're on the internet or something. *tap, tap* Is this even on?

I wonder if they seriously think this "We've got a kewl new game coming but we're not gonna tell you anyhting about it" marketing is actually going to bring in any new players?

I'm guessing Uncle EA's having them play the "Look, shiny" marketing strategy because it is beautiful, and shiny so maybe it'll bring new players because of that.

Simply stated, a lot of what you have indicated is "Heavily Hinted" is all HUGE conjecture about what the story may possible could be.

Instead of having the fan base try to pick about nonsense, give us what God of War 4 did, give us what Detroit Human Being did. Understand what Mass Effect really is and give us that need, not tangentially from interviews that Mac Walters gives.

This trailer should have you concerned

What? Isn't it half the fun to try and figure out what's going on through conjecture?

And it's not like they didn't give us anything new at all. We got our first look at the Tempest, we got our first look at FemRyder, we got new info about how they get to Andromeda, we got to see some (admittedly short) pieces of the actual game that nonetheless have quite a few implications (like the MAKO under the landed Tempest, etc.). We got frames of the departure from Earth that give us new hints about the time frame (plus more info about that in the interviews). There is plenty of new stuff here to talk about for now.

I am glad they didn't give us a complete bullet point summary of what's going on. I want to find out about that closer to release or in the game itself.

Given we've only been shown and told hints and snippets, i'm cautiously excited.

I liked the RPG style of ME1; the exploration of moons and planets (although both admittedly limited); and discovering new races.  It's implied old races will be carried over as crew, and exploration is more prominent.

So no, i think the soul of the first is there.  Maybe those that preferred ME2/3 see things differently, as this may have more quiet moments and less action, but we just have to wait and see.

What part of "not having enough info to judge the game" do you not understand? It's also quite far away in terms of release date and a Lot of things can change in that time.

As for "soul" that's highly subjective and people are gonna have different ideas about the "soul" of ME. Making a highly subjective conclusion that mass effect is missing its soul, that too from a bloody two minute trailer and stating it like a factual statement is rather silly. You also haven't given anything concrete to back up your claims in the video other than a couple of anecdotal statements which are more about your personal preferences.

I get that you want to see details about the characters, maybe some backstory and interesting lore that makes you excited about them but honestly there's still plenty of time for that and we're too far away from release. Isn't it a silly thing to do judge the game before we've even had a chance to play it.

Besides, it's just a game, chill the f out pal.

The directed insult doesn't really embolden me to facilitate your request.

All those flavors and you chose salty! Do you really have anything concrete to back up your statements or are you just gonna keep pouting?

And why the hell did you quote Andrew Ryan for saying Go f yourself. Can't you just say it yourself? It's not like it's very unique or clever that it has to be quoted.

Actually he said your communication wasn't great in the video and you do a better job of it in text. Maybe in less nice terms than I just did, but then I'm Canadian so being polite is our thing.

I consider myself more brilliant than anybody else that I know(No I don't have ego problems =P), but that doesn't mean I don't occasionally sound like I'm babbling.

I think the comparison with ME2 isn't entirely helpful either. We were continuing our stories with the promise of returning characters and ME1 had already established the stakes to a certain extent.

Maybe a comparison with ME1's trailer would be fairer - a new storyline with unknown characters in a (relatively) unknown setting...

In reference to the video, Mass Effect isn't the game with the most complex narrative.  That award goes to Legacy of Kain.

I suppose no one seems to care about my initial concerns

Why would we if we don't agree with your reasons?

Plus, appealing to a vague, undefined 'soul' is just silly to anyone not inclined to already agree with you.

Again, no one seems to be addressing the base issue here though.

Why are they trying to get us excited about things in the game that are the least exciting?

People love Mass Effect for the immersion and the characterization, not this....

Immersion and characterization were hardly huge parts of the trailers nine months out either. ME1's distress call trailer wasn't even reflective of the game's plots or choices. ME2 started with a flash of Shepard dead and Legion being creepy. Neither were particularly representative of the game to be.

Speaking personally, none of them particularly filled my loins with desire or anything close to it. Even ME2's 'for the lost' trailer series focusing on a few companions seemed more of a farce in retrospect. Characterization? Sure. Kinda. Not necessarily of the game.

DAI had probably the 'best' characterization trailers and teasers, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't reliant on trailers at 9 months out. They also had to deal with the fallout from showing stuff too early, stuff that ended up having to be cut.

Again, I would posit that, none of that matters unless we understand the stakes and the framing device.

What were the stakes and framing device of the initial ME2 trailer, legion and the dead body? The N7 logo and Legion as a geth depended entirely on meta-knowledge of the original game, which applies to knowledge needed to understand Andromeda at this point.

What were the other 9-month out trailers, and how well did they actually reflect a plot? I might give you ME3, since it's first trailer was basically Reapers invade earth, but then it made the first few minutes of the game redundant. The advertising was free to focus on the Reaper war because it was so thin a spoiler it hardly counted because the series had built up to the point of the Reaper conflict.

But why should we want that with MEA, which isn't so obvious? Why not let the theme of exploring the unknown apply to the plot and the advertising, and not just show you the destination right at the end-point?

See this,

THIS is what I'm talking about - if you didn't know this was a Mass Effect game would any of you truly be excited about what was shown?

Would I have been about ME2 or ME3 (or, by extension, DA2 or DAI)?

A sci-fi action-RPG based around exploration and colonization would be pretty cool, actually.

This is from Mac Walter: "We are already in the last leg of development"

Yet THIS is what you are giving me? This is what you are presenting? I honestly hope that some of you will actually LOOK at the video before you spew this hate.

I adore Mass Effect more than most, perhaps that's the problem.

Or you're just being silly, and showing a lack of familiarity with game development. The marketing phase almost always begins during the last leg/phases of development, once they know they have a game and are pretty sure they know what's going to be in it.

It's not new, or novel, or different from what they've done before- start off with a vague teaser and light advertising campaign almost a year out, and start the intensive press cycle much closer in. They don't, and have never, started the full-court effort full blast at 9 months out.

Why not give you what Mass Effect 1 and 2 did, and give you vague and not particularly illuminating trailers that didn't really reflect the game's plot?

If I remember what Mass Effect's actual history has been beyond the last game, why should I be concerned?

I do that extensively in the video, and I really do think we are not a gross minority here.

Had there been not a SINGLE PERSON who agreed with my assessment then I'd let it die...but that's simply not the case.

Who's agreed with your assessment, rather than your conclusion?

Skimming through, I don't recall anyone speaking of souls. Well, except maybe Iakus, but he's been jumping at any excuse to complain about the series post-ME3 since, well, ME3. Not sure he's the best advocate for you.

The directed insult doesn't really embolden me to facilitate your request.

In the words of Andrew Ryan - Would you Kindly, Go **** yourself.

Kindness is a virtue

Being honest about the effectiveness of your video and asking you to write your own position is a directed insult?

He directly insulted my intelligence and suggested here perhaps I might fare better....

My response was mild come now

Nah, it was knee-jerk and rather petty.

If meta is the standard we're willing to use for ME2 simply because it's in the franchise, then meta is a standard which should apply to Andromedea. In which case, we already have our stakes- survival in a new, uncharted galaxy that we're the newcomers to.

Well, unless we want blatant special pleading, of course.

I haven't played enough yet to have any favorite / least favorite characters, but I see what you mean about Solas.

Engaging him in a conversation feels like stepping into a minefield, since I never know what to expect with the paraphrases. The character I'm playing now is interested in what he has to say about his experiences with spirits and the fade, but does not yet feel that she knows enough to form a reasonable opinion about any of it. Thus, the desired neutrality - but I've found it difficult to reliably choose a neutral response from the paraphrases offered.

I've never found it hard to be neutral. But I am not sure what you mean by neutral - do you mean not expressing an opinion or actually having a neutral affect? These are not the same thing.

Bioware follows their usual convention with the placement of dialogue - top right is nice, middle is 'affable' for lack of a better word (i.e., it often tries for humour but of a more subtle nature than the buffy style jokes) and bottom right is gruff/aggressive.

Bioware doesn't really have a neutral affect in DAI.

I prefer the DAI approach.

Actually, I prefer the DAO approach. Tell us as soon as you start the project, and keep us posted every step of the way for 6 years.

DAO would start a furor. The number of cut features were extensive - like the much heralded nemesis system. That was featured as much as the keeps in the marketing, but because Bioware wasn't in this hyper aggressive internet world, they could just admit they cut the feature wholesale as they reworked the writing, and that artefacts survived in certain origins. That kind of blunt talk really doesn't work in today's internet.

IIRC, this particular bit had 4 options, placed in the "corners".

I'd been asking Solas about his experiences with the fade, and did not want to express an opinion about it. "I'm not arguing" looked to me like the paraphrase that would represent not expressing an opinion, but it wasn't.

What happened to the soul of Andromeda? I don't know, we really haven't been shown a lot yet since the game is pretty far out so I'm not sure what you mean and I'm not worried in the slightest. So far it seems like the soul is "exploration in an uncharted territory where you get to make decisions based on your hopefully diminishing ignorance as you experience things at the same time as everyone else." Not every company doles out info at break neck pace or delves deep into the gameplay this far out. I mean, did you even see Kojima's trailer? You get a basic idea of well....not a damn thing, you just get images and conjecture at this point.

The Andromeda trailer had some hints in it like showing that we see a few different recognizable alien races, which seem to be working together (for the most part,) and snippets to snag our interest so we'll follow the project for more information.  I'm glad they aren't spilling too much, even gameplay though I'd reckon we'll start seeing more as the months go by, even some story soon. I don't really see an issue here and definitely not one to say "Where is the soul?" like we were supposed to get all the super feels from a 2 minute teaser video.

I'm rather excited, I enjoyed all the Mass Effects (with some gripes here or there gameplay wise,) even ME3 regardless of the ending as it was STELLAR up to that point and head cannon works for me. I'm happy that we'll start as a relative unknown and be in a galaxy that is open to explore, everything will be new even to the characters and with already knowing how the other races that we're familiar with think, it'll be great to see their interactions.
