Warden Alistair. That was a bad idea.

In my first playthrough I had Stroud as the warden friend of Hawke, as a result of using the keep to make the starting conditions of Inquisition as close as possible to my DA:O and DA 2 world state.

After that, I have always changed things around to get Loghain, as I quite like killing him again, and I get to keep Hawke.

For my latest playthrough though I thought it would be nice to see Alistair again. Bad idea.

Now I will have a really hard time at the end of Here Lies the Abyss. :/

Leave Hawke. Nobody stacks up against the great Ser Alistair!

I actually almost always choose Hawke to stay anyway. Not because I hate him/her - on the contrary, because I feel if anybody has a chance to survive in that situation it would be Hawke.

Here's a simple solution: kill the Warden, then have Alistair die in DAI. LET HIM JOIN HER IN DEATH.

Ugh. This will always be my choice because I only play my canon world state. Punched. In. The. Feels.

After seeing the endgame slides idk if I could save warden Alistair now... I'm almost always going to make him king.

As for killing HoF. Then Alistair to join her .. Idk that my heart could handle that heh. Some of the choices are painful now that I've beat tresspasser....

My Warden always saw him as a steel-plated sissy.

That's a result of a king sheltering him and hiding him, and an arl keeping him from experiencing reality and life for fear someone would find out his brother in law is a cheat. I always felt bad for alistair. His entire life determined and manipulated by royal sneaks trying to keep secrets.

Have done it both ways - Alistair stays in the Fade in one PT, and comes out of the Fade with Inky and Co. in another PT. The rest of my PT's have him as King, or a drunkard (till Teagan convinces him to leave the Hanged Man ;) ).

Loghain is fun to have as the "Warden contact", in DAI. Simon Templeman did a fantastic job (once again). Love Steve Valentine, but something sounds "off", as the warden contact. His delivery of lines sounds out of place at times. Hmmm....not sure if I am describing it well, and it is solely my opinion. YMMV, as always.

Well, at least he'll accomplish something with his life in the Fade. He'd make a terrible king, but he's a decent Warden (when he's not throwing tantrums and deserting, that is).

He's a lot more world-weary. Comes with age.

Oh yes, one of the reasons I enjoy having Loghain in DAI is that the VO and overall handling of the character is absolutely amazing.

That's just it though. It didn't sound world-weary to me (which would have worked well, for me). Just "off". Like I said though, seems I am having difficulty communicating the specifics of "off".

I also found it a bit "off". I can't decide if it's just because I had huge expectations or because of the delivery by the voice actor.

Quieter, less enthusiastic?

Keep in mind too that Warden Alistair is hearing the Calling, which might account for him sounding a little "off."

To me, the answer was always easy: kill the Hawke, save the Warden.

Of course Hawke stays. Because it's the perfect ending to his story, and the surviving wardens need a commander. For me, Hawke is the man who can come out of this smelling like roses. And if everybody thinks he is death he can finally live his life without all this **** he had to be going through.

I always try to make the choice based on what the Inquisitor I'm playing thinks is the best idea. So generally they think the Wardens can be reformed and brought into the Inquisition, they save the Warden, if they are appalled and done with the Wardens, they save Hawke. There are other factors too though like their relationships with characters, particularly Blackwall and Varric, and the input given by the companions present.

My canon had it as a choice between Loghain and Hawke, with Loghain living. It was hard to watch but an easy choice to make for that character.

I leave Hawke when I also have Alistair as well, because of what you said, but more specifically because of what Flemeth told Hawke in DA2 about diving into the abyss and learning to fly :) So in my mind, until proven otherwise Hawke is still kicking.

Yes, the word "Abyss" in the name of the quest is quite suspicious.)

I also count my Hawkes among the living until something in the game will tell me differently (not sure I'll believe it if even so - it has to be absolutely 100% no doubt proof).

That is actually.. heartbreaking.

I adore Alistair and can never sacrifice him. That said, if I got to see a romanced (alive) HoF ready to kick some inquisition booty after losing Alistair to the fade, I'd be willing to do that (granted nothing horrid happens to him while there). All I can think is the hero saying "Didn't I warn them I wouldn't lose Alistair to the inquisition? Someone is paying for this!". I couldn't imagine my hero living without him.

And not just the word "abyss" either, but the whole thing! Where is the abyss, Flemeth? Well, Here Lies the Abyss :P

Me too, and I think it's worth noting that Weekes said that it wasn't confirmed that they died, since it wasn't shown outright. So there's that :)

I like Sera now, but in my first playthrough I hated her. One of the first times I appreciated what she had to say was after Adamant:

"Loghain, huh? Not a lot of tears shed for that one."

Correct, Sera. Not a lot of tears at all. I always have Loghain as the Warden, and he always stays behind in the Fade. Looks like he finally earned his redemption.
