For someone new to following the Mass Effect Andromeda stuff (and previously ME3) what's with the Mac Walters dislike?

Mac Walters and Casey Hudson were the chief architects of the ME3 ending.

They have other sins on their heads too, but shining a critical light on them on the forum is a bannable offense.

Imagine someone comes to your house when you're away and eats a bowl of your cereal. After that he cleans up, so you'll never find out he was there eating your cereal. Would you like that person?

He's never commented on the demands to include 0-g combat and that is a bad thing to do to the Krogan community.

He was responsible for ME3 ending. His writing is inferior to people like Drew who was lead in ME1 or Weekes who wrote Tuchanka and Rannoch chapters which were in my opinion the strongest points of the series.

I'm sorry but how do they hide a bunch of big-ass Ark ships in Earth's orbit? You don't even need to visually see them, all you need is radar and ladar equipment which is ubiquitous tech in starships. Also, the Alliance in ME3 obviously wasn't expecting the Reapers to attack, so why would they invest trillions of credits into sending people off to another galaxy on the off-chance that Shepard's ramblings about the Reapers might come true?

There are so many holes in this pre-ME3 premise. If they've changed the past to fit the premise, they've officially retconned the earlier games... and if that's the case, there's no longer any excuse for not retconning the ME3 endings out of existence and sparing us from this embarrassing excuse for a Mass Effect game.

I don't think they're not retconnetting the endings because they don't want retcons.

The fact that the Ark ships seem to be near Earth is a problem. I don't understand the need to make them near Earth. It'd have been easy to have them in another location,

I disagree on MEA necessarily being a sorry excuse of a ME. I'll reserve judgement until I know more.

In terms of discharging drives, it's perhaps worth noting that the space between galaxies isn't actually devoid of stars... From the linked article; "Some Vanderbilt astronomers report that they have identified more than 675 stars at the edge of the Milky Way, between the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way."

While the question of whether it's worth diverting resources to a colonisation mission is open to debate, once it's done, it doesn't somehow make the war to save the 99.99+% of the galactic population that didn't go no longer a pressing concern. It's a contingency to give species the chance to survive in some form, but it's not guaranteed to succeed and it doesn't mean that attempts to save the galaxy shouldn't be made. It's not even necessary that Shepard didn't know. Once they're gone, they are of no direct relevance to Shepard's mission to protect the overwhelming majority of the galactic population that remains. There'd be no need to talk about them in the original trilogy.

He wrote Cerberus, the endings (with Casey Hudson) and all of the godawful Mass Effect comics.

I don't really tend to watch commentary videos for stuff like this, so if you're expecting a response or for me to not keep saying what I noted you'll have to summarize that video =P

You should watch it because it's informative 10 minute video made a woman about a month ago who actually pays attention to this stuff more than I do.

But one thing she did point out is that I found interesting was that BioWare has been more open with the status of ME:A and we probably know more about than most other games in similar stages of development from other major AAA companies and studios including CDPR, Bethesda, DICE, Blizzard, and Activision.

Sounds like they're going down a similar route to Dragon Age 2 in regards to the Ryder family being tied into character creation. Brother and Sister and you select which one you want from those two, which if I'm right, might suggest a more personal story than grand Space Opera like the first trilogy.

Well, you would really only need two things to make the journey to Andromeda feasible:

  • Some way to preserve the travelers during the long journey. We discovered very effective cryo-sleep as early as Ilos in ME1, and again in Eden Prime during ME3. This machinery is able to last more than 50,000 years, far more than it's necessary for even a slow trip to Andromeda. No retcon here.
  • Being able to use FTL without having to worry about the issues with discharge. It is explicitly mentioned in the ME codex that Reapers don't seem to discharge their drives, so you would only have to reverse-engineer their technology. As I said above, Sovereign's corpse was available from the end of ME1 and was still around two years later in ME2. There are other pieces of Reaper technology scattered throughout the galaxy and even other dead Reapers, like the one we encounter in ME2. Plus, there's the collectors, as the Black Ark theory mentions. Heck, it wouldn't even have to be Reaper technology. The protheans could have developed a more effective form of FTL and let the asari know in their archive. Other precursor species could have also had similar technology, and the Milky Way is littered with the ruins of their civilizations. Possibilities are endless.

Earth had cryosleep tech to preserve travelers since the Maxwell Expedition launched in the 2070 actually...

As for the static discharge problem, I wish BioWare had looked at that better before releasing ME1. NASA created technology to deal with that on the International Space Station already. Even in the setting, space stations have discharge stations anyway, so it makes no sense why large ship do not.

Stations use discharge-drones. Do I really need to explain why that doesn't work with ships?

What else do you want to tell us that's blatantly false?

No, ark/andromeda speculation thread predates that, it started E3 2014 when we saw weird Galaxy Map on that first Behind The Scenes video. People were calling leak fake because of how similar stuff was to fan theories lol

Could be, I don't find it all that surprising, the gaming community tends to be like that.

Super pumped about Ryder having a family. I loved The Hawke family and I love making Shepard a spacer for connection with Mom!Shep, especially in Citade DLC. As someone really close with her family, I hope this is done well!

Since when are discharge station and plasma contactors unit drones???? They sure aren't on the International Space Station.

From the YouTube Gaming interview

  • The dialogue wheel will be pretty much the same, but instead of clear black and white choices (paragon/renegade) there will be more 'grey' options
  • The protoganist is called Ryder, there is no default gender, the player chooses it
  • 'There is more than one Ryder. There is a Ryder family, we're going to tie that in to the story.' (This wil start in character customization, which will be quite different.)
  • There will be some, but not much references to the old games, instead the whole point of Andromeda is creating room 'to look forward'
  • Multiplayer is optional and you can experience everything the singleplayer has to offer without participating in multiplayer. But when you do choose to play multiplayer, the experience will feel seamless from the singleplayer experience.
  • The only vehicle you can control is the Mako, no space battles for you
  • The game is in it's 'final stretch', now it's mainly 'polish, polish, polish'

From this IGN interview

  • Relations will be more realistic, they will evolve more organic
  • Romances will no longer be choosing the flirty dialogue options, which lead to a romance scene after a while
  • This also applies to non-romantic relations with squadmates, they too are more dynamic

From this other IGN interview

  • Big choices from the original trilogy (like the ending) won't impact ME:A
  • It's pretty much confirmed that the Andromeda explorers left before the ending of ME3, but when exactly isn't clear yet
  • Again, the game will take place hundreds of years after ME3
  • To prevent speculation: it's pretty much safe to say now that Ryder left the Milky Way before big choices were made by Shepard (instead of BioWare making certain choices canon)

From this Kotaku interview

  • When you land on a planet, you don't just visit for one single objective goal, they want you to hang around and explore
  • ME:A will be a bigger game 'all around' compared to previous Mass Effect games
  • The journey to Andromeda took hundreds of years, so the game is set hundreds of years in the future

From this Polygon interview

  • 'This is a story about becoming a hero'
  • Ryders and his/her crew is much 'greener' than Shepard and company
  • It's a more 'personal journey' than Shepard's adventure
  • All technology and stuff will be 're-explained' for new players
  • The multiplayer doesn't(!) have a impact on the main story

From this Games Radar interview (with Flynn)

  • The Need for Speed team helped creating the Mako
  • Mako won't be doing crazy stuff anymore, like in ME1
  • Driving the Mako will be 'actually fun' (their words, not mine)

From this French interview with Yanick Roy, that got translated on Reddit:

  • The player has a bigger influence on Ryder's personality, than he/she had on Shepard's personality (with the pretty vague argument that this is because of a new galaxy)
  • There are loyalty quests for squadmates
  • The multiplayer matches will be similar to ME3's but have more freedom and chaos
  • The Tempest might be customizable (but perhaps only cosmetic, again pretty vague answer)
  • Planets will have one 'climate' (similar to Star Wars, where one planet is completely desert, the other completely ice or jungle)
  • You can only play human, since the game is about humanity's place in the galaxy. Having a more defined character leads to a more refined story. Still, they're trying to 'give a bit more' when it comes to character customization.
  • The hero must find a new home for humanity and the other races that came along, and he/she is very versatile because this job requires many qualities

Things that were already confirmed:

  • The female from the trailer is default (female) Ryder
  • You 'wake up' in Andromeda (so you're frozen/in stasis during the centuries long trip)
  • The new Normandy is called Tempest

Other stuff:

  • Forum-member DextroDNA asked Michael Gamble about the default male protoganist. Gamble replied that he looks awesome, that we'll see him and that Gamble plays the default male protoganist in his playtroughs.
  • Forum-member BioFan got a confirmation from Mac Walters that the name Ryder is inspired by Sally Ride (the first American woman in space)
  • Gay romance confirmed
  • Can't wait to pre-order a collector's edition? More news on that in the fall.
  • PC requirements will be similar to those for Dragon Age: Inquisition and Star Wars: Battlefront.

This is so AWESOME!!

Now I really can't wait for the game.

Also, the Need for Speed team made the Mako?! HOW COOL IS THAT!!!? That's so awesome! No more climbing walls and cliffs I see XD.

I think that's always been just core to the story that we're trying to tell — seeing all of this through human eyes. Ultimately we're all humans. That's the story that we're going to relate to and understand the most. It's part of the franchise, part of the IP

Oh, here we go again. Thanks for making it "part of the IP".
