I like the "explorer" explanation more than the refugee theorie. It gives the game a more positiv "mood".
Mac Walters came by and now we know this (or: all the E3 info)

If the Ark is just an exploratory mission...
... why are they calling it an ark?
'Cause the reference still fits. What else would you call it?

Does Bioware call it "Ark" ? I never saw this name mentioned in the official stuff.

Only if you really stretch it:
ark
-
1.(in the Bible) the ship built by Noah to save his family and two of every kind of animal from the Flood; Noah's ark.
-
a vessel or sanctuary that serves as protection against extinction."a starship ark built by their android protectors"
-
archaica chest or box."the ark was of Italian walnut"
-
a large, flat-bottomed boat.noun: ark; plural noun: arks
-
-
2.short for Ark of the Covenant.
-
a chest or cupboard housing the Torah scrolls in a synagogue.noun: Holy Ark; plural noun: Holy Arks
-
-
3.a widely distributed bivalve mollusk that typically attaches itself to rocks with byssus threads.

Not exactly, but they did show us that ARKCON jacket, which is where I believe people got the name.

Why am I not surprised? ![]()
Large? Sure. Flat-bottomed? I... don't see it. And they may be ships, but they're not boats. /pedantic ![]()
But you know what I mean. I'm not presenting it as absolute evidence, but that they chose the name "ark" suggests a number of things, and it would be very awkward to use it where it doesn't quite fit.
EDIT: What if what they were going for was this:

- Apparently the colonists had a choice to go to Andromeda, since they all have different motivations (adventure, curiosity, running from something or they just want a fresh start)
I wonder what reason for going they'll force on our protagonist.

Would be good if we had multiple options to pick for that, similar to Shep origins. It's gonna be key part of anyone's Ryder's personality, best if BW doesn't force 1 and only true reasoning for signing up for Andromeda voyage

I have to say that your pessimism seems a little overdblown. Especially since if that's true, it would lend credibility to the idea that we're not being railroaded into a military role this time around.
Which would be awesome. Academics in space maybe?

Not with SuperMac in charge. It would be more opportunities for him to screw up continuity. Look at the Sole Survivor origin for Shep. Nobody with that origin would ever work for Cerberus. Yet it derps its way into ME2 without so much as a conversation about it with the Illusive Dork.

It would be cool, yes. But with us having a family that ties to the story, I have doubts we'll have that option since them all of them will have to change to fit that choice.

I think you can bring Akuze up in a conversation between Shepard and Miranda but I think she basically goes; "Oh, that wasn't Cerberus. You should really give us a chance" and you never have the option of bringing it up again.

At least you can kill her and Jacob on the Suicide Mission and disrupt a bunch of Cerberus operations. I always did that as a Sole Survivor.

Sort of, it's more of a generalized "well you made zombies and rachni warriors" kinda thing.
Then again, I've never imported a Sole Survivor save, so maybe it's different. I just couldn't handle that much derp.
I really liked a lot about the Mass Effect series, but Mac Walters just took his love affair with Cerberus and his disdain for world building continuity too far.

Reapers confirmed!
The Ark angle could be viewed as that of a vessel with a breeding population to kickstart a civilisation, possibly not just the sentient species, but also specimens of fauna and flora of the various galactic planets. Anyway, this whole research angle reminds me a little of the whole colonising Mars business that is happening at the moment, in that everyone who signs up is in full knowledge it is one way, with no means for return.

I think this is interesting. Although the Arks may have been created by someone with knowledge of the Reapers, it sounds like not all the people who left knew about them. Another hint the Ark leaves before the start of ME3.

Why cling so desperately to the idea this happens during ME3? This could very easily happen around ME1, and before the Geth invasion. That avoids any need to even mention the reapers.
Yeah, but then there's no reason to even go to Andromeda. The Milky Way is full of unexplored systems, even if you count those out of range of the Mass Relay. The coming of the Reapers actually gives the colonists an imperative to get out of Dodge.
Plus, the fact that they left the galaxy on a survival mission doesn't mean the exploration element is left off. My pet theory is that the Arks were intended as experimental exploration vessels to chart space outside of the Relay network, and was repurposed when the threat of the Reapers was made clear. Now that they're in Andromeda, the Reaper threat is over, so they focus on the present; building a new home for their races in the new galaxy.
If the mission to Andromeda really is only one for exploration/scientific purposes, I'll be left confused. Why pour so many ressources on such a project with no strong imperatives? It is highly improbable anyone is coming back alive from Andromeda, if they even reach it, and forget about establishing any kind of contact or trade routes until intergalactic Mass Relays become a thing on both ends, so there seems to be little if any point.
The only possible reason I see is if the Council absolutely refused to allow any non-Relay exploration for fear of any Rachni Wars 2.0 happening, but gave the green light for Andromeda since it's too far for any danger to threaten Council space if it ever becomes aware of it. And even then that doesn't answer what interest anyone has in a project of this magnitude.
