So there were rumours that the N7 character we've seen in previous trailers isn't Ryder and is actually a villain in the game.

Now we've just learnt from Mac Walters that there's a "Ryder family" and that they're changing the way we choose and customise our protagonist in the game. This sort of sounds like there will be two Ryders; a brother and a sister. I'm guessing (and really hoping) that in character creation we choose to play as either the brother or the sister and the sibling that we don't pick will end up being the N7 villain. The sibling's facial features we change to reflect our chosen protagonist's face so that they look like they're related, that'd be something cool similar to Fallout 3+4.

The game involves tracking down your missing brother/sister (depending on what gender you're playing) and perhaps even having to choose whether or not to kill them at some point. I think that'd be an awesome direction to go with this whole Ryder family thing.

Either that, or the sibling ends up as one of our squadmates.

Yeah, I hope the family is more important than "all dying in the prologue'.

You and me both. I was like "Huh. Suddenly I'm suspicious." But we'll see. I mean, I'd also like to have a supportive sibling I love very huggy much who nothing terrible happens to... But this is Mass Effect, and Shepard can't even go out for lunch without falling through a fish tank, so I'm pretty sure something pathos-inducing will happen to the family eventually.

I expect they will be, otherwise Walters wouldn't have mentioned them

I'm not sure with the familly thing, I don't especially want to have a familly forced into my character BUT it can also be a really great idea depending on how they handle things so.... wait and see, I need more infos to decide myself but this interview really made me happy :)

Sister should have a change of heart, side with hostile to humanity Andromeda locals, kill one of our squaddies, and get killed by us.

So, brother or Sis boarded Cerberus Ark ship and head to Andromeda?

We follow in Andromeda Initiative Ark ship?

Someone is pissed!

We're the Illusive Man's illegitimate children. Our sibling is carrying on dad's legacy.

I don't. I'd rather not have a family show up at all.

I'd like the idea of a brother/sister dynamic, we never really had that, given that Bethany/Carver dies in the intro.

I think antagonist dips into cliche territory, I'd prefer a foil/rival type. You're paragon, their renegade, and vice-versa, provide some dramatic tension. As long as the P/R choices make logical sense and aren't just "Stupid ideals/racist jerk" stuff

yup i love this idea. also agree that antagonist dips into cliche. isnt there a star wars story like that with the two brothers or something? i also dislike the theory that the N7 character would be a villain, whether your sibling or not. i guess i kinda am fanboying on N7 at this point by not wanting evil to be associated with it. sigh. but yea i have to say the "family" clue is interesting and it may have potential to turn out great especially if they go the foil/rival type. lotsa fun dynamics and cool stuff.

maybe even a repeat of the virmire choice somewhere between your sibling and another squadmate or a local idk?

Most of this seems extremely possible, but I have the opposite reaction to it. I really don't like this approach. Basically giving us an "evil" twin would be... such a cliche way of conning us into being emotionally invested. I'm disappointed in these revelations. This is supposed to be a fresh start for the ME franchise and it seems they're trying to load us with emotional baggage right from the start.

A sibling for a villain is just so melodramatic and daytime soapy. Hell, the idea of the villain being N7 or human at all just seems completely stupid. Why would that happen? What could their goal possibly be?

It would be very nice to see the PC's siblings.

I just hope they are going to have a big role in the game

I agree, but just for the sake of speculation...

Maybe they're sleepers for Cerberus bent on eliminating the alien species that came with us, and any locals, to establish human dominance. Maybe they're indoctrinated. Maybe they're swayed or controlled by some yet unknown alien antagonist.

Just the first things that came to mind.

I just know if I get stuck with another carver I will kill every single squadmate possible and then be a dick to everyone. Probably make tons of whiny posts about it because I can.

Agreed OP.

I also hope they bring the family mechanic from DA2, one of the few things BioWare did well in that game.

I don't mind the idea of family, if it's well executed. Sending families on a colonization mission makes sense. You're not going to send a mission full of "lone wolf" types, so most of the people on the mission should have family.

What I don't think I want is a squadmate family member. That's way too close. It takes up limited space that could go to a far more creative and/or interesting character. Keep the family story in the background, with everyone else's family, and it could go well.
