Given that the next Dragon Age is still years away, and that Microsoft and Sony will have new consoles out long before then, which game engine features from other games would you like to see in the next DA? E3 showed a lot of cool new stuff, and some of it really got me thinking...

At the Sony Press Conference, they revealed a new zombie game called Days Gone. Their crowd technology is amazing, especially given the high detail, open-world surroundings. Just imagine if this was a Darkspawn Horde... or spiders.  I think BioWare games need to be able to incorporate more people/crowds in general, and I think with the new consoles coming out, that'll give them more room to play.

Dishonored 2 showed up again at E3 and what really stood out were some of the imaginative gameplay elements (eg. some of the crazier powers and the timepiece). It would be nice to see Dragon Age shake it up a bit with something unexpected.

Horizon Zero Dawn just makes me cry this is a PS4 exclusive. I don't see much here that the Frostbite Engine couldn't handle though, except for the crazy hair physics. Which Dragon Age needs. Desperately.

In the Gears of War 4 demo we see some cool extreme weather effects and destructible environment. I'd love to see some of that make its way to DA. And just more interactivity with the environment in general.

The one distinct improvement I noticed in our own Frostbite Engine coming with MEA were the much improved facial animations (and details around the eyes). This will really help sell those cinematic conversation scenes. :)

Any other features you like to see...?  B)

Dishonored's timepiece bit was soooooo cool looking.

And I can feel my mirror neuron's firing every time I see that Asari gif.

Make "Hold" hold.  Oh wait.  That's a game control  tweak, not a game engine one.  :P

I'm hoping that - assuming it fits in with the structure of the next game! - some of the stuff that got cut from DAI for technical reasons might make it into DA4 now. Specifically, the Keep specialisation stuff. I mean, assuming there are Keeps and we get to take them over.

I'm hoping they go with a more customize-able Engine and one that accepts player created mods easier.

And a Creation Kit. Since you have to create tools for your own developers anyway, spend a little more money and have a dumbed-down version for modders. Is that so much to ask for?

As for engine features: bullet time, or at least fancy slowmo take-down/final-kill animations.

Speaking of which, a vastly underrated game by the name of Bulletstorm had a cool feature - certain sniper rifles had a bullet time mode where your camera viewpoint was attached to the bullet. And you could steer the bullets. Would be great as an archer ability.

Well, the facial animation (and quality) was possibly the most impressive thing shown in the Andromeda, uh, "trailer". So yeah, I definitely hope (and now expect) DA4 to incorporate that, and even improve on it, since that usually happens. That, and them using mocap to do animations as basic as powers makes me hope that they'll do that for the vast majority of body animation too, which is really past due at this point in Bioware games :P Obviously I'd love this in Dragon Age as well.

And hair physics, like you mentioned, seem to be at least somewhat present in Andromeda, so there's another thing they should work on (and you know, good hair!). I just hope that the hair physics aren't only for the default Ryder (that's so weird to say/hear/type) or something silly like that. Bioware has been known to lock-out facial features for defaults.

They... did? I didn't notice much in the way of animated hair in the trailer. Maybe a *tiny* bit of movement.

Oh... I wish. I so, soooo wish.

I think they've said in the past though they still use a lot of 3rd party plugins and such so that they can't just give it us. :(

That is a pretty cool feature. B)

And after playing a TON of Doom recently, I'd love to see "Glory Kill" style animations in the next DA (but more weapon/spell-based obviously). B)

Ah, yes... MO' MOCAP!

It's bloody expensive, but so worth it. And EA Vancouver has one of the, if not the, best MoCap studio in the world. B)

It's really hard to see, and it's possible my eyes are just tricking me, but it looks like her bangs (on the right) move a little bit here.

It's certainly falling somewhere between very subtle and, um... very, very subtle.

Another technique Dragon Age might be able to make to some use of is Photogrammetry. EA used that extensively in their Star Wars Battlefront game. For those who don't know, it involves taking a lot of pictures of a real-world locations and using software to create 3D meshes from them. The benefit is that you can create these ultra-realistic in-game locations. Real world locations having a lot of subtlety and nuances that are almost impossible to replicate by hand.

Now, Dragon Age has somewhat stylized environments, with unique flora, and I think that works well with their world. So this technique may or may not be the right fit. Perhaps it could be used as a terrain foundation to build upon?

Haha, very subtle indeed ^_^ But since it does look like it moved, and it likely didn't move much because her head didn't move much, hopefully this means it will be more extensive.

I'm guessing I understand this sentence. Subscript/ conscript or the conversation trees?

Pretty sure they mean scripting for battle in the tactics menu. I missed that in DAI, too.

I'm actually not the biggest fan on how "crowd" (if you can call swarm of zombies like that) behaves in this one. Dunno why. I just don't like it.

Yeah, I noticed this as well. It makes me think that Sera's and Morrigan's hairstyles were "tests" for slight hair movement in Frostbite.

Swimming has my vote. Doesn't need to like in TW3, but overall... yeah, swimming.

Totally fair. Personally, I love the swarm/crowd behaviour, it sounds exactly how (grunt) Darkspawn have been described (and imagine if those were spiders!). Plus, it's just plain ominous to watch!

A couple of other cool advancements we've seen in the Frostbite Engine for the Secret IP video were day/night cycles and (more interestingly) changing seasons.

https://youtu.be/4H1FN2_--EM?t=1m48s

With DA games usually spanning years, it would be great if we could revisit regions and jump into key plot points during different times of the year. Imagine a huge battle or laying siege to a castle and the difference between attacking during the day in the middle of summer vs the middle of the night... in a snowstorm. Watching cities change with seasons, rivers freezing over or drought open up new areas to explore, etc., etc..

I second swimming, day/night circle and changing seasons/different weather.

Being able to climb stuff would be nice too.

Just got another idea, I'm atm playing Xenoblade Chronicles on my Wii (I know, I know, old game  ) and there you don't just have day/night circles, no, there are also some NPCs who only appear at specific times. (atm I want to talk someone who's only around at 10AM)

And I think that'd be cool for the next DA game too.

Like, you can only enter a tavern between, idk between 10AM and 12PM, or get a specific side-quest around 4PM-8PM. Stuff like that would be cool. :D

(ofc I talk about in-game time, not real-time)
