There is no default Ryder according to Walters however there will be one for the promotionals and marketing. And that default Ryder will most likely be female instead of male as seen in their latest trailer.

Just some facts to show how illogical it would be if it were the case.

>82% created Sheps were Males in contrast to 18% being females

Alienating 80% of your fanbase is marketing suicide. Let's see what Bioware does in the future.

Or they could just use both, they used Femshep's voice for the previous trailer and now they used Manshep's. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just because 80% of the playerbase used sheploo, doesn´t mean they are immediately alienated when they see a female in a marketing campaign. /thread

Male here, I don't feel alienated and I'm not less interested in the game because they use a woman in marketing. Sure, I'd like to see the male version being used in marketing but as long as I get to play as one I don't really mind.

Let's kill two birds with one stone and have the female Ryder but with male Ryder's voice. It's perfect!

LOOK AT THIS CREATURE. IT'S LIKE A MAN, BUT WITH TWO FATTY MOUNDS ON ITS CHEST. I FEEL SO FRIGHTENED AND ALONE.

If they make a good game - and somehow convince me that stuff shown in the trailer isn't "alpha footage lol" again - then I'll buy it no matter what default protagonist is bouncing about. Of course the reverse is also true.

Then again, someone could be biological a man and could still be considered a woman.

It looks like the small bits of gameplay they've shown had the male character, yeah? Would sticking to that trend be a good enough compromise?

Sure I'd prefer a male in the marketing, but given the origin of Ryder's name it seems appropriate.

82% played male Shepard, let's just pretend that makes male Shepard canon and official.

Maybe that makes sense? Shepard was name after Alan Shepard.

This time, maybe 80% will be Female Ryder, so let's pretend that's canon.

She is named after Sally Ride.

Maybe bioware feels stronger stories with these genders being the protagonists; maybe they prefer certain designs; maybe it's just a strategy; maybe the one they put has to be either male or female and they never thought either way would be a problem?

It almost looks like the switch between male and female in this very trailer, by the armor at least. I really don't think this is a big deal.

What? You're chatting **** again, Dutch.

BioWare are notable now for providing both male AND female protagonists. You see a BioWare game, you just know you can make your character look how you want, and pick either gender as well. It's not like this is some studios first ever game.

You just want to pick BioWare apart like a ****** vulture.

I believe it's should be 50/50. 2 of every trailer maybe. We've seen a man so far anyway. Bioware saying that guy in N7 armor in trailer last year wasn't protagonist, that's just bioware bull******** us.

If I'm going to take this seriously my first response to finding out Ryder was named after Sally Ride or however you spell her name was:

Given Shep was after Shepard and appears as a male it makes sense Ryder named after Ride would appear female.

I like the idea.

I'd prefer if Bioware used both cause I want to see what CC can do with male protagonist as well- also it'd be nice to hear what his voice will be like though maybe there is more than just one option for that- but still it's nice to have female protagonist in marketing for change.

Why is it 80% of fans are male?

Because everything has been marketed towards males. Those fans know that you can pick either gender. If they stuck with marketing towards males, that number is not going to change.

Showing a female in their advertising campaign doesn't diminish the game to the 80% that are males. They know you can play as either (unless they are brain dead individuals). It does however market the game to another demographic, thus getting more fans of the female gender.

What harm is that?

Are you not going to buy Andromeda, simply because they don't show a male protagonist?

Or they could just use both

Or they could just use...none. Like using something ambigous enough. DAI had used a 'neutral' figure with their helmet on in their trailers and artwork, and it worked just fine. Of course those who preferred playing as dwarf or qunari were not so happy, but at least human&elf had it ok.

I'm a female who normally plays females (when given a choice), but I dislike that 'awakening' scene, simply because that cheerleader pony-tail girl has nothing to do with my character. And I don't care for the 'official' femShep same as I don't care for the 'iconic' Sheploo. Use armours, use camera angles, but spare me of those random default non-existent faces.
