I might go FemShep this time. or at least try it out for a few hours. I liked her model though she has hot in a realistic way, she didnt have a perfect face like most females do in japanese games. ultimately its the voice acting that decides.
Bioware's default Ryder

I am thrilled that the first trailer has a female character. I like the shout out and I really like the character design. I don't think it's unfair at all. It's not like this is going to be the only trailer that is going to be released. Once the ME:A ad companion ramps up, I'd bet they would make up for lost time.
So yeah, props to BioWare for that. However, I am curious to see what the male PC could look like as well in his own starring trailer. I'm pretty critical of character animations. The gorilla-like stomp or the perpetual slouch that male PCs have in BioWare games is silly and I'd like to see how they might have improved this time around. Plus, I'm always down to catch glimpses of what the CC will offer for both genders.

No, they prolly swap them during the promo all the time so we can hear the VAs.

Plus, I wonder how many dudes played Tomb Raider just to admire the... looks...
Nah.
But it did make it easier to pay for.

Or they could just use...none. Like using something ambigous enough. DAI had used a 'neutral' figure with their helmet on in their trailers and artwork, and it worked just fine. Of course those who preferred playing as dwarf or qunari were not so happy, but at least human&elf had it ok.
I'm a female who normally plays females (when given a choice), but I dislike that 'awakening' scene, simply because that cheerleader pony-tail girl has nothing to do with my character. And I don't care for the 'official' femShep same as I don't care for the 'iconic' Sheploo. Use armours, use camera angles, but spare me of those random default non-existent faces.
I see your point, but I think an iconic face helps in a franchise that maybe (pleaaaase, pretty pleaaase) can be a trilogy.
I only played Mass Effect with MaleShep once and he was not the default Shepard, but everytime I saw him in commercials and Youtube I couldn't stop the excitement. However, it is true FemShep, all the FemSheps I played and watched in Youtube felt like the true Shepard.
I don't know, everything has a good and a bad counterpart.
Personally, I loved the default Ryder and I will play as her the first time so I cannot be impartial

They already said in a tweet that they'll show male Ryder soon.
Relax, I'm sure you'll see the male protagonist quite a lot during development, OP.
As for the hypothetical theory in your post, as a male, I don't really care who they'll show up in marketing. It'd be fair if they show both.
I'm surprised though at the tweets and questions asking if we can choose the gender of the protagonist, expecially considering that the male protagonist was in some footage in the trailer.

So people are finding that cause they might focus more on a FemRyder in the trailers, that its a problem?
What is wrong with people?? Like seriously??

default Ryder is female?
Outrage!
as long they reduced the female character on her bust, it's ok.

Welcome to the BSN. Coffee? Soda? Something stronger? Trust me, this is just getting started. You're gonna want to brace yourself, because it's going to be a long summer.

I think that some folks want to make sure that is an option. Perhaps hearing an example of the male PC's voice will do that. Also, the ME:A team will probably take DA:I's approach of letting folks know via the website about gender options.

Yeah, I noticed that
.
Considering Bioware's history, I'd expect the gender choice to be in, not the opposite. But I think we'll see the male character talk in Fall anyway.

I'm looking forward to it. I'd love to hear more of the voice acting for the game.

If you mean that they should make the female MC's chest smaller, I didn't notice it was that big.

These threads are quite something alright. ![]()
Anyway, it doesn't matter to me if they use a male or female protagonist to market the game. I create multiple separate playthroughs, both male and female.

I think if they show the male character at least once to give a perspective then it doesn't matter which gender they use to advertise.

Or they could just use both, they used Femshep's voice for the previous trailer and now they used Manshep's. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
That wasn't Manshep's voice, that was Super MAC Walters.

Watch the vid again. This face is anything but 'iconic'. Me3 femShep concept design at least had some badass personality in it.
This is definitely not the face you would want to see on all the covers, arts and trailers for the heroic Space-fiction. It would probably work for something like 'Gravity' or 'Alien', but those are all different kinds of stories.

I agree. If a game doesn't have good story, characters, or at the very least gameplay (looking at you, your "story campaigns" and photo-characters, Wargame: Red Dragon... you magnificent strategy game) it's not worth paying for.
Which is why the last FPS I bought was... damn, I think MoH: Warfighter. No, don't laugh. Story was decent-ish, gameplay was believable, and by some major miracle, I was actually angry when Mother bought the farm.
Alienated was not the first thing I felt when I saw FemRyder.
I know, right.
Though I'm not sure if I want to know what your reaction was...
(That said, she's my new background pic)

Source?
All I see is 80% of shepards made being male. I know several women who play male shepards because he's used in promotional material.
