Will I be lost if I play this game before the first 3 ME games?

I'm not a ME gamer, despite loving the DA games. So, I'm wondering if I start with Andromeda, am I going to be super lost in understanding what's going to happen. I am finally interested in playing a Mass Effect game (just not the first three)!

It might be too early for any fan to know this, but I hope somebody from Bioware can answer this question before the game's release.

No, there are supposedly very few to no references to the original trilogy. I would still recommend ME1-3 for their own value, however.

From the YouTube Gaming interview

  • There will be some, but not much references to the old games, instead the whole point of Andromeda is creating room 'to look forward'

From this other IGN interview

  • It's pretty much confirmed that the Andromeda explorers left before the ending of ME3, but when exactly isn't clear yet

For those reasons, I definitely suggest to play the trilogy and get around the lore. After all they aren't bad.

It sounds like the devs are taking strides to make sure ME:A is welcoming to the new players. I'd also recommend playing the ME series for some of the lore and companions as well. :)

Probably not but play em anyway. They're great if not better than DA. In my opinion of course.

BW seem to be doing a soft reboot with Andromeda so I doubt you need to play Shepard's trilogy to understand what's going on.

I don't think so but for a better experience I highly suggest you to play the trilogy or you will miss references.

Also the trilogy is just wonderful, it would be sad to miss it ;)

It shouldn't have a massive effect......

If you do go back and play the trilogy do it knowing parts of it are 10 years old.

No, you won't need to play the previous games. Bioware is essentially throwing the old games away.

Mass Effect: Andromeda will do a good job explaining things to you, and there is always the Codex for more information.

They said that there will be very little of the old games as they are focusing on the forward.

As you can tell however, most of us are recommending the original trilogy. This is not so that you are familiar with this new game, but because it's just that good. Or maybe we are biased, because we are on these forums.

The Shepard trilogy are good - at times great - games, but it sounds like MEA won't directly reference them, so I don't think you'll be lost if you don't play them.  Besides, any references that are made will probably be explained by the Codex.

I dont think you will be as this is the start of a new trilogy so they will explain whats happened previously in the intro to the game i would think

As others have said, you shouldn't be too lost in terms of lore, as it will presumably be fairly easy for new players to jump into.

However... They're saying this will be similar to the previous Mass Effect games, so whatever dissuaded you from trying out the first 3 games might still be an issue in this one. Just worth keeping in mind :)

"We wanted Andromeda to be a fresh experience for everyone," Walters said. "So if you haven't played, you don't have to worry about whether you missed out on some key choice or something like that."

Mac Walters to IGN apparently

You don't need to play the previous Mass Effect games so you can start with MEA if you like.

No.

If you decide to play the trilogy, make sure to start playing ME3 first. Its the best place to start playing a trilogy. Then play ME1/2 after that.

A dev mentioned that ME3 was a good starting point for new players. He was very wrong. If you don't play all of the games and import your Shepard, they'll start you off with the most unfavorable of all of the world states.

I'd recommend playing it the whole way through til the end, but I'm not going to sugarcoat it for you. The last 20 minutes of the game will leave you annoyed and staring at the monitor in disbelief. Don't let that discourage you though. It's worth seeing it through until the end, for better and for worse. Then you'll be one of us nutjobs on the ME forums.
