Will I be lost if I play this game before the first 3 ME games?

Well...without giving anything away, the plot contrivance to explain the final 20-30 minutes of the trilogy is really bad. I thought the ending slides themselves were okay with the Extended Cut. Still, hopefully you'll be like me and not let that tarnish the enjoyment I know you'll get from the series. :)

The game needs to be open for new customers, so you need not worry about that.

I don't think you'll be lost at all. The Codex should fill you in on all of the background lore. Since the original trilogy isn't relevant to the story in any way, it doesn't really matter. You'll just miss out on a few references but it's not a big deal.

No one is right or wrong. I think it's a matter of taste and of how much you're willing to accept that not all questions will be answered and if you're willing to fill in gaps yourself/create some theories. The ending was all about speculation from the dev side.

I knew the ending was generally hated when I started playing ME3. I thought it was brilliant (even before I had played it with the Extended Cut).

Even seeing on this forum what people disliked about it I still love it. And yeah, there are flaws in the games, but to me, the general idea of the ending isn't one of them. I hope you'll enjoy it or at least enjoy the ride until shortly before the ending

No you are right it's a matter of taste and no one is right or wrong and of course no one has the same taste while playing a game any game. But what i read here does make me curious of what you all are talking about here about the ending.

So you are one of the few who likes the ending ? I think there is no game out there that has no flaws there is always something wrong with it at least for me.

If i play ME 3 someday i'l remember that i will enjoy the ride before the ending  ;)

Take a look at it this way:

As someone who is quite familiar with the lore, seeing the EA Play trailer told me that it's going to be a lot of the familiar, and some new. I could see drop shuttles, rifles, effects, armor, etc. that I'm more than familiar with and love, combined with new stuff.

I even identified the shuttles as modified UT-47A Kodiak "Combat Cockroaches", instantly realized I'm seeing the M-8 Avenger or M-7 Lancer, understood when an attack was fueled by biotics, and the armor shape and texture was something I have seen before. It was new - but old at the same time!

I would recommend not playing the Trilogy and just starting out with ME:A.  Don't get me wrong, I love the Trilogy in it's own right, but it seems to leave a lot of other people pretty bitter.  I think the opportunity to go into ME:A without those jaded eyes, introducing yourself fresh to the lore (and however they might change it to accommodate the new story), might allow you to maximize your enjoyment of the game.  We are assured that our Trilogy saves will not be importable into ME:A, so there is no benefit gamewise to playing the Trilogy first.

If you do decide to play the Trilogy now, brace yourself for an emotional ride and guard yourself about becoming bitter over the endings.  They are not that bad, particularly if you don't allow yourself to become too attached to "your Shepard." - Sit back a little from the normal RPG thinking and allow Bioware some room to tell THEIR story... which is a thought provoking and controversial tragedy (not Shakespearean in quality, but still OK)... and you'll be fine.

Also, keep in mind that first installment of the Trilogy is 10 years old and ME3 is 4 years old now.  Also, bear in mind that some of the people who are most bitter about the ME endings seems to bear other "grudges" against Bioware and EA.

It's supposedly going to be a soft reboot of the setting going to a different galaxy, intentionally distancing itself from the older games.

Id suggest you play them anyways even if not relevant to Andromeda, though. There's at least 9 months left until ME:A which is plenty of time for that. If you liked DA, it'll feeĺ right at home despite being a shooter.

Nothing is required but playing the trilogy is still recommended if you want to know what event lead to humanity presence in Andromeda.

I'm not a ME gamer, despite loving the DA games. So, I'm wondering if I start with Andromeda, am I going to be super lost in understanding what's going to happen. I am finally interested in playing a Mass Effect game (just not the first three)!

It might be too early for any fan to know this, but I hope somebody from Bioware can answer this question before the game's release.

no because it'll be a fresh game and a fresh story although presonally why wouldn't you want to play them because ME as a whole is a great series.

Can solve your dilemma, you can get the whole Mass Effect trilogy for the low price of 14.95! even comes with both DLCs for mass effect 1(woot), and can probably complete them well before ME:A comes out.

A dev mentioned that ME3 was a good starting point for new players. He was very wrong. If you don't play all of the games and import your Shepard, they'll start you off with the most unfavorable of all of the world states.

It's actually quite interesting to play from that perspective. Gives a whole new outlook on the Krogan and the Geth.

Is the ending really that bad ?

The first time I played was with the Extended Cut, which was supposed to remedy what fans complained and hated about the original. I still felt an emptiness inside me when playing. But you slowly accept it, and life goes on. Hell, if you really cannot get over it, there are multiple mods which change them slightly.

I have however heard of people who do enjoy them. tbh, there is no right or wrong in art, and video games are Art

I'm still waiting for a new trilogy pack with all DLCs included. EA is forcing us to use Origin and it's features like BioWare Points.

On-topic: There is a lot of time for ME:A to launch so go head and play the trilogy. Do not fear about ME3 endings. Just go for it, experience them and decide for yourself.

On the topic of Origin, I hope with all my heart that I will not have to open that shite up for ME:A. I know my wishes will go unfulfilled tho.

Personally, I don't think so.  Some people like it and some people didn't, but there was an element among the people that didn't who had a lot of free time and a surfiet of aimless frustration to focus.  If you want to know why people don't like it unspoiler the following:

Spoiler

A lot of people have put the guilt on ME3 after enjoying the entire game... because of the last five minutes.

It is... understandable, and unfortunate.

Note that there's a long-running argument over whether that spoiler is factually true, which has occasionally produced some wacky arguments like "it doesn't matter if it's true because it feels true."

I suppose it's likely that ME:A will spoil a few key plot points from the trilogy in the prologue and Codex. But that won't hurt understanding ME:A.

Still, you might as well go ahead and play the trilogy, unless your gaming schedule for the next nine months is full.
