You might get a few occasional references here and there but for the most part you aren't going to be lost if you hadn't played the previous because Andromeda was designed to be a clean slate taking place in a different galaxy. With that said you are missing out on a treat if you don't play the original trilogy. The original trilogy should be played for it's own sake.
Will I be lost if I play this game before the first 3 ME games?

Actually if some modder figures out how to make the old Mako fly, then ME1 wouldn't be near as bad as most say, it's the finger mashing, boding jerking to get the damn thing to work right, can even break a sweat getting around.

No. I'm sure Mac Walters will make the story completely accessible to people who managed to avoid wasting five years of their life on the previous three games.

No, you won't have to play the previous games to enjoy Andromeda but I'd suggest, much like others have so far, to play the first 3 anyway since they're all very good games. You won't regret it ![]()

Nope. The latest interviews with Mac Walters pretty much sum up the fact that this game is going to be very approachable to new players.
I would suggest playing the original trilogy if you're excited for Andromeda, regardless, though. They may be becoming a little dated in 2016, but it's the story and characters that draw you the closest to the games above anything else, and that's what matters most.
Oh, and, the save file transfer system will probably steal hundreds of hours from your life. Sorry.

If by lie you mean have my own opinion that isn't yours, which is apparently disgruntled
Yea, it's not for everyone, but 99% of the series is almost perfect.

Mostly true. Just be sure to stop the game before the magic elevator ride.

The extended cut (free dlc) did improve the ME3 ending. It still wasn't great, but at least it was no longer devoid of emotion. And that's the one thing the ME trilogy does really well. Emotion. You build up a relationship with many characters over a large amount of gameplay and there are some truely touching moments. Much more so than any other game series I have played.
I'm a bit iffy on recommending ME1 though, the story is OK but the combat gameplay is not that good at all.

However, Andromeda is still at least 9 months away from release, so that's plenty of time to work through the trilogy. They're good games in their own right, and it'll give you an "aha" moment when you spot a reference you otherwise wouldn't have gotten.

I'm not a ME gamer, despite loving the DA games. So, I'm wondering if I start with Andromeda, am I going to be super lost in understanding what's going to happen. I am finally interested in playing a Mass Effect game (just not the first three)!
It might be too early for any fan to know this, but I hope somebody from Bioware can answer this question before the game's release.
You are not going to be lost, devs themself say ME:A is made, so that it is "fresh-men" friendly.
However, I'm 100% sure that knowing the events of ME1-3 in good details, the lore, races, characters ect. will be fun for the player as he/she evaluates the ME:A counterparts in these areas, expecially how each race behaves now in ME:A after having travelled ~2,5 mln light years away from home with small amount of resocures, no intel about Andromeda, in relations with newly met natives of Andromeda ect.
If you haven't played Mass Effect before, then now is the PERFECT time to start - not only you have excellent amount of time to catch up until the game's release (as of now we can extimate you got ~9 months tops) but also gain great fundament to delve into ME:A.
In a brief summary:
- play ME trilogy in chronological order, so start with ME1
- do not judge ME1 for its rather archaic gameplay, as the story and characters are just great and fun to explore
- when playing ME2 - do a completionist walkthrough i.e. do every mission/side-quest as it kinda "pays off" when you reach the end of the game and benefits transfer to ME3
- judge ME3 for its core aspect, not its ending...
*Funny thing to remark - I seem to be a "reverse-mirror-image" of you, as I know ME to the very bottom, played it many many times, but never actually got into DA...
