Russophobia is defined as a diverse spectrum of negative feelings, dislikes, fears, aversion, derision and/or prejudice of Russia, Russians and/or Russian culture.

According to the rumor floating around, the protagonist family name is Ryder because apparently, the first female astronaut in space was Sally Kristen Ride. Hence, the name Ryder was chosen for Mass Effect Andromeda's protagonist with Female Ryder being Bioware's default protagonist.

https://en.wikipedia...wiki/Sally_Ride

There is just one big problem with this...

The first female astronaut in space was not Sally Ride. The first female astronaut in space was Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova.

https://en.wikipedia...tina_Tereshkova

Only those with an Amerocentric view of the world would see Sally Ride as the first woman in space. Those who choose to be factual would recognize that the first woman in space to be Valentina Tereshkova.

This is typical ignorant Canadian behavior. Although to be fair, that country gave us people like Justin Bieber and Ted Cruz so I can see where that comes from.

If Bioware wish to do the "first female astronaut" moniker justice for the protagonist name, they should change the protagonist family name from Ryder to something along the lines of Tereshkova.

Going with English surname makes sense cause it's more familiar to players around the world than Russian last name would be. But it shouldn't be expressed as Sally Ride was first woman in the space if she simply was first in US and not first in world.

Well, it's just a rumor, isn't it? Maybe they chose that name because it sounds good? I honestly don't see the problem, and I'm russian btw o_O

By that logic, why wasn't the original trilogy the story of Gagarin?

I checked the source of the tweet where they confirmed Sally Ride was the inspiration.  They never said she was the first woman in space, they just said they used Sally Ride as the inspiration.

Even the notes here on the forum say she was the first American woman, not first woman.

How can you talk about drinking without talking about eating? A vodka dropped on an empty belly is a sad vodka!

Da. My Slivovitz agrees with you, and my pork, dumplings and sauerkraut jumped right into my stomach at the mention.

Also, damn, these english speakers got such awkward names for that dish of pure EPIC.

With a legacy like this, we need not fear any resistance in Andromeda. We conquer with cuisine, drinks and music. And anyone who doesn't like our stuff is a barbarian anyway.

Btw: We need to bring bears to Andromeda, everybody likes bears!

I think it's called 'reference delusion'. I mean, the op's disorder.

OP should really stop watching Russia 24 TV. Let me tell you little something - there are plenty of things on Earth that are not meant to offend or discriminate Russia and\or Russians. They just happen, because reasons.

Also - uchi matchast, pen! They had named the fing top-front space station (aka Jump Zero) after Gagarin, and we've got plenty of Russian names on the galaxy map. Not to mention couple of high-ranking military figures (like Rear Admiral Mikhailovich). Rusophobes don't really act like that.

I don't think so. It seems like humanity paid tribute to both space race competitors. Shepard, Grissom, Gagarin station, etc..

And I think Kaiden was supposed to be a slav or Ukrainian mix.

Precisely. Bioware developers somehow forget that white people are actually a diverse group of people. If you look at the original trilogy, you can see the Americentrism at work.

Shepard - American/English name.

David Anderson - English name.

Steven Hackett - American/English name.

Jack Harper / Illusive Man - English/American name.

The list goes on and on and fascinatingly, you will not find many if not any Russian names, European (West & East) names and Jewish names in Mass Effect.

Bioware loves to talk about representation and diversity yet they make a space opera game with humanity as one of the focal points and one of first things they do is practically ignore the Russians.

Maybe next time they should clarify it by saying that its an American version of humanity, not a global version of humanity.

#RussianAccomplishmentsMatter.

Technically, the "first female astronaut" in space was Laika, who completed an orbital flight 5 years before Tereshkova.

Granted, Laika was a dog, but still...

Yeah, I already said that they should replace "Ryder" with a good long Russian name, something like: Ivan Ivanov Vladimirskovsky.

P.S.

Hmmm... Can someone have cheeseburgerophobia?...

Have you ever considered that Alan Shepard was the first American man in space, and that Sally Ride is the first American woman in space? Because I'm almost positive that that's what they did...

and the first thing you did was ignore all the evidence that punches your trolling full of holes so we have that in common.

I think history should be respected and valentina was the first female in space. this is not the first time western game companies have used russophobia in their games. i remember in Black Ops they accused Russia of using nazi engineers to build their space program....i guess they never heard of Wernher von Braun.

Who do you think built anything in the post-war world. German scientists and engineers that learned how to do stuff from stolen Czechoslovak technology.

There are entire star clusters named after Russian pilots/cosmonauts.

Just because Shepard and Ryder are american doesn't mean anything.

In terms of practicality, as we have the possibility of a male or female protagonist, you'd have to record two sets of dialogue. One for Tereshkova and another for Tereshkov.

Kaidan Alenko - Canadian name.

It's a 200% native Ukrainian surname.

Kaiden Alenko is not Canadian lol

Technically he is, because he had lived in Vancouver with his parents, had some country-side property too. Still, his surname is Ukrainian.
