Oh and Casey Hudson was a pilot and engineer. You think he doesn't know this stuff? He was trying to pay tribute to all of it.

Kaiden Alenko is not Canadian lol...at least not the names..first or last
Well, he originates from Canada himself, but... his family is Ukrainian.
There are entire star clusters named after Russian pilots/cosmonauts.
Just because Shepard and Ryder are american doesn't mean anything.
Čapek, Haskins System, Titan Nebula.

There are star systems named after Americans too. However I highly doubt people recognize these star systems more than they recognize Shepard or will recognize Ryder.

Ryder isn't much of a reference to Ride anyway.
But it is a bit of a shame that the surnames of both protagonists are "English".

I kind of got the feeling they were trying to make a match up with East and West, when they made Alenko and Shep. A small sign how things had evolved.
Kind of like Chekhov and Sulu were supposed to reflect a unified Earth in Star Trek.

Precisely. Bioware already did an English/American-named protagonist for the Mass Effect Trilogy, what's the harm in doing a Russian-name protagonist for Mass Effect Andromeda ?

Because they only sort of want to do a reboot. The best they're gonna do is reverse genders for now.

Ride was the 1st American woman in space.
I don't really see the problem here.

I do think Mass Effect names would beneftit from less Agnlo-American-centrism and go for more Germanic, Hellenic, Uralic, Indo-Aryan and Dravidan names instead.

No really, I normally appreciate a good pun, but it's really-really hard to accept that surname and take it seriously AFTER THAT BLOODY PRESENTATION!

If anything it's less because of nationality and more because Ryder is a shorter catchier name.

Plus it would lead into "Ghost Ryders in the Sky" much more fluently than using Tereshkova

I like Russians but one thing is being Russophobic (which they are not) and another one is being Anglocentric (which maybe they are). Let's not make it political. I wouldn't be opposed to more surname diversity on the humans we encounter but it's hardly a problem..you can give to Ryder the name you want and pretend he is from a mixed marriage.

Russophobia is defined as a diverse spectrum of negative feelings, dislikes, fears, aversion, derision and/or prejudice of Russia, Russians and/or Russian culture.
According to the rumor floating around, the protagonist family name is Ryder because apparently, the first female astronaut in space was Sally Kristen Ride. Hence, the name Ryder was chosen for Mass Effect Andromeda's protagonist with Female Ryder being Bioware's default protagonist.
https://en.wikipedia...wiki/Sally_Ride
There is just one big problem with this...
The first female astronaut in space was not Sally Ride. The first female astronaut in space was Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova.
https://en.wikipedia...tina_Tereshkova
Only those with an Amerocentric view of the world would see Sally Ride as the first woman in space. Those who choose to be factual would recognize that the first woman in space to be Valentina Tereshkova.
This is typical ignorant Canadian behavior. Although to be fair, that country gave us people like Justin Bieber and Ted Cruz so I can see where that comes from.
If Bioware wish to do the "first female astronaut" moniker justice for the protagonist name, they should change the protagonist family name from Ryder to something along the lines of Tereshkova.
#RussianAccomplishmentsMatter.
Tereshkova was a cosmonaut, you ignoramus. To say that Ride was the first female astronaut to go to space is factually correct.

Yuri Gagarin was the first human being in space and he was a man... so stating that their reference to Shepard in the ME Trilogy was about the first man in space is not accurate. Clearly, they are following the NASA space program, not the Russian one. They did, however, name a system after both Gagarin and Tereshkova in ME1, so it can be generally assumed that they are aware of the contributions of those two individuals to the exploration of space and have paid some homage to it. Yes, they use English-centric surnames in this series for their protagonists and a lot of their major NPCs. They did also, however, use many non-European names for NPCs in the series - e.g. bint-Sinan Al-Jilani, Bhatia, Kohoku are just a few I can recall off the top of my head).
