Comrade, do you even Russian?
In Soviet Russia, space explore you.

Not only Bioware, must say (Relic guys with their Company of Heroes 2 wouldn't let me lie). The Bioware devs are russophobes, but - no more, no less, than any other westernites ... western Russophobia is at least 1000 years old, thus - sadly! - nothing new is said here :-))

Oh, no, OP never Russians!
(well, might have Russianed once, but he was just a kid. Does not count)
While i dont completely agree with the OP, all your comments of mocking russian culture/names/etc only make his statement true.
Since its in the future and humanity more or less united, they should have used a bit of variety of names and nations shown, not just American/English.
The only thing I could see a russian having a problem with is the gay romance in the game, which I hope exists.
A side from that I don't see any issues.
No one is Russophobic dude, its just that Russia already is a failing state, and probably wont exist in the future. Russians had Rear Admiral Mikhailovich and others in previous game. And also, Ryder sounds much better than Vladimir Tereshkovski

What language are you speaking now? And why? English is the language of the future, and it is most probable that English names will overtake local names in time,

Valentina Tereshkova. If u wanted to argue, check names in google.
Russia might always has been in poor economical crisis, and lets be honest our human rights are far from perfect, but we are not Middle East or any other country like that, and still have good resourses and military force. I Highly doubt that Russia wont exist in the future. You are just saying nonsense.

I doubt a man would be called Valentina. Or have last name ending in TereshkovSKA.

There was a time when the civilized world spoken in Latin...

That world didnt have internet, phones and other fast means of spreading information. And even then it lasted for a milenia. If any language overtakes English it will be Chinese, not Russian.

"sigh". nobody suggested using the first name, i just corrected you. And for men it would have been "Tereshkov", without the ending "a".
Anyways, this argument will go nowhere. All i wanted to say that i have nothing against the name " Ryder". But russophobia is real and more ppl nowadays forget we have as much space accomplishements as other countries and wish it was recognized.

Its not Russophobia when people state facts. There is no grand conspiracy against Russia or Slavs, its just that they are a miniscule part of human population with almost no impact
I would have been just fine with a protag of just about any race or culture. A russian name would have been just fine with me. I do have to note that Tolstoy, Pushkin, Chekov, Gogol, Dostoevksy were all totally anti Canadian racists becasue they never had a McDonald, Smith, Jones in their books and never once did any of their characters say 'Eh'

no impact. learn history.
In reality our characters name should have been 'Albert' because he was the 1st monkey in space well before any sad sack chicken human.
Just got here. I'm glad to see this thread has been received with the dignity and seriousness it deserves. Carry on.

so much seriousness and dignity here. i'm amazed:)

LOL, hey at least Putin has a super bowl ring.
I don't think Bioware's writers are Russophobes, but you do have a point about the weird overuse of English or Anglicized names. Hackett is supposed to be Argentinian but his name is Stephen instead of Esteban. Samantha Traynor has none of her Indian heritage reflected in her name, and you'd never guess by Ashley Williams' name that her writer intended her to be of Latin descent. I'm surprised Kai Leng didn't show up as something like Ken Lake instead.Precisely. Bioware developers somehow forget that white people are actually a diverse group of people. If you look at the original trilogy, you can see the Americentrism at work.
Shepard - American/English name.
David Anderson - English name.
Steven Hackett - American/English name.
Jack Harper / Illusive Man - English/American name.
The list goes on and on and fascinatingly, you will not find many if not any Russian names, European (West & East) names and Jewish names in Mass Effect.
Bioware loves to talk about representation and diversity yet they make a space opera game with humanity as one of the focal points and one of first things they do is practically ignore the Russians.
Maybe next time they should clarify it by saying that its an American version of humanity, not a global version of humanity.
I always thought that Bio team must have had a few Russians on staff, because of the Russian names and inside jokes that appeared as early as Baldur Gate's evil dwarf Ilyich character, which is not really something I'd expect a native Anglophone to 'get'.
I am happy to see some of the clusters in ME as well having Russian names as imo it reflects the impact that Russians had on the exploration of cosmos.
As well, I am hoping that the first name is still going to be player-chosen, so like in Serenity, where the national identities are blended, you can name your cosmonaut Valentina Ryder for example.
no impact. learn history.
What impact did they have? They provoked WW1 and got crushed, had a communist revolution happen to them, which then depended on western support to survive nazies, and then failed when nazies were dealt with.

One could easily argue that if not for Russian the fair haired westerners would not have been victorious in WW2. (What's wrong with a communist revolution btw?)
