Hi, when i attempt to launch the toolset i get the message

"Unable to connect to database. Run the toolset configuration program and verify your settings or search the toolset wiki. The toolset must now exit"

Everything on the toolset wiki was just confusing, i can't find any configuration program. I've had this problem for a year now!  I would normally just delete the files and reinstall but since it's like a modification to the game i don't know which files are associated with the toolset and the server . I think i had something during installation that failed to install.

When i look trough my files i can't find the "MSSQL10.SQLEXPRESS".folder where i'm supposed to look for connection errors or something. I've got program files > Microsoft SQL server then just "80" and 90" whatever that is.

What do i do? I'm not very good at this-- i've never modded a game. I use windows 7.

Until someone who knows more about it than I do sees your post (almost everyone), a few things to consider.

If you want to add mods to your game you don't need to install the toolset.  I think you intend to create your own, new mod(s), but just confirming. :D

There are several helpful posts on installing the toolset, you should also make sure that the advice is for the same version of Windows that you are using.  All that said, I also did searches on the error message when I had trouble installing the toolset a few years ago.

Sorry that I couldn't be more helpful, but if I could (eventually)figure i out then it can be done!

Ah, sorry. I should've specified that i use Windows 7.

I don't really intend to use mods; it was more to provide an example of my general lack of skill with modifying game files.  The various answers i found on google were just confusing.

Thanks for the reply anyhow, hopefully someone'll come along.

What steps have you taken so far to get it working? Did you use the configuration tool that came with the toolset or try to take care of it at the command prompt?

Also, are you using the default 2005 sql server packaged with it or are you using a newer version?

to run the configuration tool, go to program files (x86) -> dragon age -> tools.  click on ConfigureToolset.exe.  when it opens click next and if you are using the 2005 sql that came with the toolset, make sure "use default database" is checked.

I get this in the configurator:

I'm using the one that came packaged with the toolset.

Modifying things like character names, portraits etc.

ok. when you installed the toolset did you click both boxes, one to install 2005 sql express and the other to restore the database or just the one to install 2005?

I think i ran the installation as an administrator, isn't that automatic? I don't really remember the checkboxes though..

I have no idea if administrator is automatic or not.  until 5 days ago all I knew was xp. lol  anyway, it looks like you're missing a lot of stuff.  are you sure you looked in the program files and not program files (x86)? it's actually in both places.  the one in program files (x86) is only the 80 and 90 and client sdk folders. be sure to double check both places.  if you can't find it in neither of them, then I would suggest you uninstall the toolset and database then try again.

go to your control panel then go to uninstall programs. I think when you uninstall the toolset it will ask you if you want to remove the database. tell it yes.

I tried installing it again, but it doesn't work. Here's a couple of photos with things that have been mentioned in replies above.

This error message seems familiar, i think that's what i had when i installed last time. I get this during installation. Now that we have the error message, maybe we can figure out what's wrong?

I'm flying a little blind on this. I don't know a thing about Windows 7, but it looks likes a permissions issue which was what I was having trouble with over ythe weekend.

another possible solution I found was to create a new administrator account and try installing under that.

Just for reference purposes, I use the default 2005 MS SQL 'that comes with the toolset on Win7 so it can be done

Going back to your reason for installing the toolset.  The toolset may or may not be needed.  Companion portraits are not changed through the toolset.

I got it to work! Thank you so much, i combined changing permissions with creating a new folder in the common files folder called BioWare and merging it with the other one used for Mass effect.
