I hope that too. I'd like being able to recruit only the characters I like personality-wise (and the races and LIs I like the most).I hope all of them are optional.

Recruit none for the true solo experience.

Funny thing is... I'd still recruit them all, but I'd want the option for those who would not.

Well, in ME1, DA2 and ME3 almost all were mandatory. No doubt several of them will be optional; when was the last Bio game when you couldn't do that? It's equally certain that at least some will be mandatory, just to make writing easier.
Being able to recruit/reyect most of our potential squad members is part of the RP freedom I'd like to have.

Because the opposite in BW games usually means "less content". Ash/Kaidan scenarios are rare (and that one was far from perfect anyway). Wish BW learnt that giving a choice between "lots of extra content thanks to additional squadmate" and "nothing" is hardly a choice worth giving. Now, if you make an entire level, or separate sidechain that deals with the impact/consequences of not recruiting someone, or give a full fledged companion of a different kind in exchange, that's a choice worth creating.

How do you do ME2 without recruiting some people? Isn't the whole point of the game to assemble a team. I thought you need all the squad members to unlock the main Collector missions.

Depending on how many counts as "almost all," 2/3 for ME1? In ME3 the VS is optional and Tali and Garrus can be dead, although I suppose dead doesn't count if we're talking RP. They could have been made fireable if anyone had thought that scene was worth the wordcount.

You need everyone to fire Horizon, so recruiting Jack, Garrus and Mordin is mandatory (Grunt can be left in the tank). How do you do ME2 without recruiting some people? The Collector Cruiser mission won't fire without eight squadmates. Miranda, Jacob, Jack, Garrus and Mordin, plus any three others.
So, most but not all.

Yes of course you need recruiting in ME2, but you at least have some more freedom when choosing who you want to recruit. How do you do ME2 without recruiting some people? Isn't the whole point of the game to assemble a team. I thought you need all the squad members to unlock the main Collector missions.
The best example of what I want in recent Bioware games is of course DAO, only Alistair was mandatory (yes impossible to beat the game with less than 4, one of them a healer BUT you could choose which characters would fit every role in your party).

Right, so if you get Kasumi and Zaeed you don't have to recruit two of either Thane, Tali and Samara?

I'm OK with mandatory if it makes sense that they be mandatory. Like, if we're ordered to work together by superiors or something. If I'm stuck with annoying murderer guy just because, with no way to rationalise why my character tolerates them, its aggravating.

I think mandatory one's are better for overall story. Cause otherwise Bioware would need to not tie particular characters in certain storypoints as tightly or come up with replacements. But I guess it would make sense if they were mandatory at some time, but depending of your actions they could leave or you could even end up killing them.

I hope most of them are optional so I can have a more, say, personalized squad character-wise. Thoughts?
What do you gain by not taking some companions? (you don't have to take them on missions after all)
You only lose content (at least in ME2...I am discounting 3 here, don't like that game - much!)
