Have you been to any campus lately? Today 20ies mentality, in general, are waaay immature considering, say late 30ies and 40ties in XXth century.

in 1944 young men were jumping out of planes, embarking warships, landing on beaches etc. VOLUNTARILY. Now they need safe zones because "words hurt"... :)

Words have always hurt. The only difference between then and now is that we actually recognize mental illnesses now.

You do realize the male and female protagonist will have the same role, so what you say for the female Ryder will be the same for the male one? So male Ryder will be 'a young male discovering himself, blah blah blah?'

Wow! Awesome! Now males can be the naive/deer fledgling personality in need of a domineering female personality!

For a single phrase, said in a possible suboptimal mental and physical state. Great logic.

Meh,they announced Blackwall's character and showed a single picture I was like "he's hiding something he's a pure psycho and extraordinarily violent"

Or maybe you're reading to much from a single phrase said by the protagonist, and a couple of interviews. ;)

I'm pretty happy we're getting a younger protagonist, and since the game lets you be male or female, the gender isn't an issue. I'm glad they're using femryder in the promotional stuff since Maleshep was so front and center until around ME3. It's a nice change of pace.

I don't really care what happens as long as the story is good. Does Ryder come to command a small group or even a ship? Fine, long as it's not too nonsensical I'm ok with it. It's sci fi, rules will be bent a bit here or there. I'd rather judge the characters, and the story, more based on it's merits than just go "wow that person is young." I'd rather look at it as how we got to that point and what it does after.

Kinda neat seeing someone having to learn and grow, and thematically it makes sense since we're in a new galaxy ourselves so Ryder is a perfect viewpoint for us to experience it together.

There's been a lot of overreacting for so little an amount of information, I get that people care about the game, but we really have zero clue to a lot of what's going on. Other than being in a new place getting to see new things, which is awesome =D

As stated I already read Blackwalls character like a book without nothing more than his beard basically.

Besides to be honest I have friends that are guys that have that personality and I think it wouldn't be altogether a bad thing to represent that in media, it's just silly because that's Hollywood stuff not Bioware stuff.

He was hiding something, but he wasn't either psycho or extraordinarily violent. He made a terrible, horrible mistake. A mistake he should be punished for, but which doesn't reflect his personality. He wasn't psycho or that violent at the time of inquisition.

And it doesn't change the fact that after the cryosleep the body and mind takes a while to return in full condiction, she wasn't in her normal condition. But if you want to think this is a rehash or Twilight or the Hunger Games, feel free to do so.

Incorrect. According to psychologists and doctors, the human brain is fully developed by the age of 23.

I'm no neurologist, and even those who are don't claim to be definitive experts. I stay a bit more read on the subject than most, but not much. That said, I've read this before. I can also say that I believe Hanako's statement is more up-to-date, or in step with current thinking. She's not wrong, according to what I've read in recent papers.

I don't want the thread to get derailed into a debate between amateurs about neuroscience. Either way, we don't need science to tell us that, generally, 25yo see the world with a broader perspective than 20yo. Your comment seems to suggest we can agree on that.

I'm going to stick to discussing Mass Effect, henceforth, to avoid a thread derailment. I'm not dodging a discussion. I just want to respect our fellows here in the forum.

Yeah, despite my reservations about her age, I am loving the focus on femRyder. Props to Bioware for giving women their due this time around. I also appreciate the call out to Sally Ride with the name Ryder. I'm already pondering an appropriate first name to go with the surname. Hmmm....maybe I'll name her after a pioneering awesome feminist. :)

Around the age of 25, young adults go through a small life crises.

Can confirm.

As for the protagonist being younger... I'd rather they be green/new to command. Shepard was already pretty much a badass by the time we meet him/her, and it would be neat to see the protagonist grow from someone inexperienced to a respected leader.

Being (partially) right one time doesn't mean you'll be right another.

Yeah it's more like being partially right a lot of the time but whatever.

But seriously it's a lot more than just that, they said in the interview "the cast will be more green" they're going to a completely new world i.e. (free of nasty complicated influences like politics and stuff that ourfragile young protag can't possibly handle) the fact that they haven't shown anything substantial and kept delaying (showing they don't understand video games or mchanics super well and are instead all writers/Hollywood people) the fact that it's in Montreal (not Edmonton where Bioware started and where DA was which has a different identity) the fact that the trailers themselves are sort of boring and open (oh look, lets check around, be peaceful, look at all the pretty flowers)

And the fact that it was a female at the end of the trailer, which actually does hint that it was specifically made in creation to fan's desires about a "female protagonist" to be shown, i.e. they listened to us i.e. they didn't do it themselves i.e. they take their verbal/emotional cues from other people and on and on and on and on.

If anyone has a problem with millennials it all falls on whoever raised them. whether baby boomers or generation x. There's nothing wrong with millennials. It's a different time. Some people adjust, some can't. Generation x and baby boomers, their parents said the same of them I'm sure.

Anyway a lot of gamers and fans are just abandoning the whole AAA scene anyway, so if the game sells well it'll probably be primarily to the same Hollywood crowd who just moved elsewhere.

Right, past experience doesn't prove the future. It can help, but it's not a guarantee either. That said, I still don't agree with their assertation that it's just a bewildered young kid, still just looks like someone coming out of cryo and dealing with those effects, beyond that it's hard to tell besides being maybe surprised.

I'm already going to name my femRyder Ada, after Ada Lovelace. I enjoy that they're focusing on her as well as the inspiration for her name, as well as not necessarily having an over military bearing (though there isn't anything wrong with the last part.) Very cool stuff! It's about time we start getting more positive views on stuff like this, and I don't see it as pandering to the media when there's still a general lack of representation for multiple different kinds of people. Really hope the story is good!

While I was watching the E3 live on YouTube, I was not impressed by BioWare's press conference. Outside of a few interesting reveals, BioWare didn't announce anything ground breaking. When it comes to the 'Star Wars' franchise, I think Disney made a massive licensing mistake.

Where are the "Dragon Age" announcements?

Where is the single-player and offline "Star Wars" rpgs? Did they go extinct?
Where is the next "Jade Empire"?

Regardless about what EA/BioWare said in the clips, I personally think this company solely exists for political reasons.

Well to be fair it was like every game company, I've never been more bored to be honest.

The conversion from "different and exciting" to "streamlined and monotone, same old thing" is pretty much 100% complete in 2016 I'd say. Well, as far as the western gaming scene Korea and Japan still seem to go strong.

Agreed. It's great to see more representation all around. I've been feeling really positive about the victories feminists have won in entertainment. Star Wars has a female Jedi and a black male lead; after many horrific seasons, women are coming out on top in Game of Thrones; CDPR has taken criticism of their games to heart and removed many juvenile elements, though still retaining many; the Ghostbusters remake features awesome funny women; female led action movies like Hunger Games and Divergent are blockbusters; and the list goes on. In many ways, it's been a great few years for feminist entertainment.

Love the name choice, btw.

I'm seeing a focus in that only femRyder spoke in the trailer. When have women been the focus in Mass Effect promotional material prior to Andromeda?

Sheesh, ya grump. Way to rain on my femRyder parade.

That's because Shepard was in their late twenties to early thirties. Their age each game was:

ME1: 29

ME2: 31

ME3: 32

well I figured that as much. I'm usually right about most things. I figure even if they were going to go with a "younger" hero it would not be that much younger. So early to mid 20s. Don't see how thats the end of the world. People should just be thankful we don't have 15 year old whiny emo boys saving the world like in some games.
