I'm coming around just a bit on this age issue. It seems that Bioware started her young so we can get the full heroes journey with her. I suspect her arc will span a trilogy and she will age up throughout the series. Additionally, if Ryder is given appropriate levels of authority given her experience level, say command of her squad only at the beginning, and reports to competent officers, I'll be content. I just do not want to see a new Trek scenario where 20s are running the show.

It would be a nice change from Inquisition just throwing us in the leader role even while everybody is still uncertain if we're legit or not.

As someone who is 2 years from 30, please don't make me feel creepy hitting on 20-year-old teammates. Please.

Also I don't empathize with children.

You better shack up with 'em now cause when you're 40 it won't be an option.

I bet you wish we were still doing that popularity contest now.

Which I was winning.

Just saying.

I grew up with 3 sisters, my mom and a brother that moved out when I was 1, so no frame of reference. But, I can say that my husband has never had that problem or he has the decency to hide it if he does!

When he gets home, I'm telling him everything I learned today on BSN. I'll probably get another 'da'****' face and a "Why do you go there, again?" heehee

Hey, if this old fart can role play as a 30-something kid, surely you 30-something kids can try role playing as a 20-year-old.  I think I'm up to the challenge, but when they start asking the PC to change his/her own diapers though, I quit.

I don't know. I'm seeing the current world, the young generations, what's trending with a different set of eyes. Not everything is acceptable.

"It is true that successfully completing the ICT program do not elevate the graduate to a military rank. It's a designation that is applied to Alliance personnel who have graduated from ICT program"

So it means that... even though you survived and did well in the real-life combat situations that were a part of N6, when you become N7, you might still be a Private or at most a Lieutenant. Not a Major or anything.

Not exactly.

West Point is an officers training academy. Young people enter West Point for a career in the military just the same as one enters university. US students graduate as commissioned officers in the US Army, if I remember correctly.

More this. And much laughter at the West Point comparison.

West Pointers are college kids with a bit more training and just as little real-world experience. They tend to be a bit more competent than your random college-educated fresh LT, but that's such a low bar it's not saying much.

Let's not overlook the situation, however. The particular circumstances of the Arks may mean that they have limited personel able to fight and explore, and thus are pretty much saddled with giving the PC a command role. Indeed, I'd be surprised if we start the game as commander; ALA ME1, I think we will be a noob forced into captaining the ship due to unfortunate mishaps.

Something similar happened in revolutionary France. The lack of general to fight all their wars meant you could get promoted to the highest offices as early as 22 or 23 years old. Sometimes, it didn't work. But that one time, they ended up with Napoléon. When you are in a critical shortage of commanders, protocol doesn't matter that much.

That is a fair point. With Earth occupied and billions dead, manpower shortages probably would be critical and result in people being promoted into roles they'd have been viewed as unqualified for pre-war. Assuming Ryder is under 25...head canon accepted!

I'd hope in that case that the Tempest wouldn't be the only exploration vessel launched from Ryder's ark. A young, inexperienced captain works better if there are multiple scout ships, with Ryder just being the most inexperienced of those ships' captains. If there is only one scout ship however it would strain suspension of disbelief a bit that they couldn't find one captain who has been around since the Skyllian Blitz or First Contact War.

Yea, too vague of info to go off of right now but it'd make sense if Ryder was one leader of smaller groups sent out and about. It isn't like they're going to get to Andromeda and have a single ship flying around doing ALL the exploration especially if there's multiple arks. Unless something happened to the fleet on the way out of the Milky Way, they'd have a number of ships to explore and it figures that possibly Ryder makes their way, if not at first, to a leadership position of one of those smaller teams.

Would be interesting if there's a kind of contest or some such at the beginning to prove yourself, could insert a rivalry with another character or group if/when you beat them. Lot of story potential here.

I'm 36 and I have no qualms about hitting on 20 year old crew members....( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Seriously though, why would you feel creepy, just hit that renegade trigger and put some Barry White on.

I think people tend to forget the SR-1 was a post-prototype, first of it's kind vehicle, hence why Shep, of all people, was on it. They wanted large amounts of experience onboard in case anything went wrong. When this vessel got created, it was likely two years past and is one of many in the fleet. It's a frigate after all. And quite likely, Joe N7 is overseeing the missions.

Well, i don't mind if the cast is young, but 20 years is kind of young for more than one reason besides player age/comfort with age of PC.

For example, people that are 20 years old probably didn't even have enough time to get the knowledge required for that mission. (ever seen an 20 year old astronaut?). Or they are raised solely for the mission to Andromeda, which makes the game lose a lot of appeal for me as i don't like people being forced in any direction whatsoever.

Or most people at young age still are discovering the way they see life. They are competent people with strong opinions and convictions, but there is one important aspect connected to life:

You can't learn experience, only learn from it.

PS. Definition of 'young' is, off course, entirely individual for every single one of us humans, so don't shoot me if your own definition of young isn't fitting in what i wrote. Please ;)

PPS, sorry for any grammatical *an error has occurred*, that's something i'm still learning (not my native language)  :)

Have a nice day!

Eh, at that age a lot of guys usually still have massive hershey stains in their tighty whities. Aw hell, in their 40s too.

Is it because of the testicles getting in the way that some men can't seem to reach the abyssal regions of their hairy trench

Very nasty. I can't explain why this happened, but I think you might be confused about a great many technical details concerning the day to day execution of manhood.

To be fair space flight in the Mass Effect universe is as common as traveling by car is today.

It would also make sense if they put us under the command of a more veteran officer regardless of our age, because we're supposed to be a "greener" crew to begin with.

I rather doubt they put nothing but 20 year olds on the ark, but having some of them would make sense. The arks seem to be rather large, so there's bound to be a lot of people. Not just mission specialists.

It's also possible to have the knowledge, just not the experience(which being a green crew we wont have regardless). I graduated from college when I was 19(about a month from turning 20) as a programmer.

Though my guess is still that the PC will be early to mid 20s rather than exactly 20.
