Age doesn't always = experience. I'm 26 but my boyfriend is 20, and he's 10x smarter than me. As history would show, there's been great/terrible things done by ages between 12-19 (even still today). Actually, 32, which is what Shepard was around by ME3 (29 in ME) isn't old anymore. My clone, calling me "Old Man" was kinda stupid, because 30s isn't old anymore. If you look at history, 30-40 was middle aged. Death was expected between 50 and 60s. If you were 70-90, depending on region... AND/or religion, you were just lucky, you were considered a wizard/witch; using magic to extend your life unnaturally, god(s) cursed you with immortality, so you could watch loved ones die but not you... etc etc. You were considered a man/woman between 12-19, some were even married at 10 but had sex (that we know of) at 14. Now, average death expectancy in 80-100+. So if you play a character, who's 20-45, you're technically a kid. As age has shifted.

Personally, I'm fine with being a greenhorn. It'll make interesting romances too, as Shepard was older than all of his/her romances. Now it's a switch.

I wouldn't mind if they would start in the early 20's and not 30's. I'm in the middle of it, in terms of age but since it's a new start with a protagonist that isn't already a hero it would feel better if they not in their 30's yet. We had the veterans and specialists already. Make way for new blood and some nice young piece of alien ass for us ;D

The only way I think I'd be in favor of a younger cast is if we aged throughout the game or if there was some jump forward in time at some point during the campaign.

You know to take this idea further, why not like, 18-20 year old characters instead of 20-25 even?

I guess because of the rigors of military combat or something? Is the physical body not strong enough then or something?

So if you heard that the protagonist was 24 instead of 29, you would not be in favour of that? Also, an ark ship means there's going to be a jump forward in time of hundreds of years anyway.

Do we even know who the companions are?

There is a few assumptions about our squadmates, like with the Asari, Krogan and Salarian in the trailer, but not a thing has been confirmed yet. We haven't even had a good look at any faces from the game at all save for the new Asari and Sally Ryder. I almost forgot "Being Dropped Off of a Cliff" guy as well. According to leaks and rumors, there is supposed to be a blonde human as well named Cora and the krogan from the trailer is called Drack.

Knocked out by Krogan death potato, then dropped off a cliff? That guy really isn't the luckiest fellow.

I don't really find their age to be much of a concern as long as their characters are interesting and compelling and they don't make non characteristic choices on the altar of story convenience too much.

I'm personally at an age that I'm still able to (mostly) empathize with younger people. Not all of them are arrogant, ignorant, rash, or any combination thereof. I've met quite a few people older than me that would fit most of those descriptions. ME:A also seems to want to build over time, so we'll be growing along side these young companions (which it's arguable how many we'll get.)

Feel creepy hitting on a 20 year old in a video game? Solution...don't do it. Cater to you and up jump the age of the companions.....and now other people have your issue in reverse.

The real solution is that Bioware will probably make them span different ages, and it's unfortunate if things just don't work out for you, though I hope with such a diverse cast it isn't the case and you can fully enjoy ME:A. Especially without taking anything away from others in the process. Most of their romances, for example, have been across the board in age, while many have been young, some have been old enough to make no difference and honestly if you feel age is an issue then you've already become close minded to characters you haven't even met yet.

Trying to not dismiss your problems or feelings OP, but they don't necessarily mean there is a problem.

The entertainment industry is always about the target audience.

I'm absolutely positive that a bunch of big wigs at bioware, at some point for the Mass Effect franchise, sat down and discussed what their target audience was and how they can market to that group in every way possible. Typically, it's good to broaden the audience, but you dont want to alienate or confuse people by doing so.

I have no doubt BioWare will continue offering important and developed NPCs of all ages (save for adolescents unless it makes sense), but when it comes down to romances, do you honesty think, with time and/or resource limitations, that they would input a man or woman of 40yrs+ over someone more around 20-35yrs?

Nonetheless, I dont think you have to worry about a Final Fantasy-esque cast, because that's what I imagine when you say "young cast".

Don't mind.

The interesting part here is he's unintentionally confirming a few things.

Looks closer at the interview. He debunks a few theories.

I'm with a lot of people in this thread, I want my characters age to be appropriate to the story that is being told.

If you are talking about a colony ship fleeing from home world destruction, then you are going to skew the age ranges lower for breeding, certainly for human females every year over 16 is a black mark as far as fertility is concerned.  Given that you could have a few years of conflict/troubles with setting up a colony stable enough to start thinking about populations growth you don't want to start with a 30+ crowd only to realise that come breeding time they are all over 40.

Thats said the ships are not going to just be about breeding, most likely who gets to go would be picked on a points system, same as most immigration works now.  Needed skill set, age and health would all be taken into account.  The prefect candidate hits all 3 and would be picked first but high enough score in Skill set will forgive a lack in others, so you will see a good mix.

So while I don't think it will be teens runinng about going phew phew, I do think it will skew lower and i'm fine with that

My last post answers your question quite clearly, I think.

I'm aware of how much time will pass during the trip to Andromeda. Which has nothing to do with my previous post. I specified that I'd like to see characters "age" over the course of the campaign if given a younger cast. There'll be no aging in cryo-sleep on the way there.

The same CC"

God help me!!! The hair..... where did my hair go?

It's about as fair as the lack of representation for the over 30s in gaming.

How is the rapresentation of over 30s in gaming revelant to Liara's age?. She's a young woman by all means.

Beside, I don't see the need to use that strawman in Bioware games, which have plenty of people well over the 30s.

Just because the protagonist isn't an established hero, like Shepard, doesn't necessarily mean the protagonist will be a teenager or in his/her early twenties. Then again, this is a role playing game and you are meant to role play. I think it's fair to say the protagonist and the cast (of humans at least) will range from 20-30. As long as the game is fun and the characters are interesting, that's what I care about. JRPGs almost always have protagonists that are teenagers and that certainly doesn't discourage me from playing a couple every now and then.

Huh, so FemRyder looking young in the trailer was intentional then? I don't mind, it will be nice to play someone my own age for once, most (western) video game protagonists are in their 30's and 40's.

Well from what I have heard we will be pretty green compared to Shepard.  Same for our squad.  Shep and crew were veterans.  We are trained but inexperienced.

I hadn't heard this but if so this is cool! My ideal RPG character is a bright-eyed youngster type :D

@Sheep. Well, they kinda did that with DA:I.

Josie was about 27-29 years old
Blackwall is in his mid-to-late 40s.
Solas is...well, Solas. Probably doesn't count.
Cassandra is between 38-40
Cullen is 40
I think that Iron Bull was in his mid-to-late 30s
Sera was the youngest, about 19 years old or so.
Cole's age is...whatever, he's a kid. I think his physical age is about 20.
Varric is 40. (Stated in the wiki)
Leliana is about 38-40.
Dorian is 29.
I just looked up Vivienne's age. She's 43.

So I'd say that 7 (8 counting Solas) of that list of 12 is at least right around 40 years old or older. That's out of rest of the remaining party members and advisors.. Most of them do look younger than the stated ages, but that's about how old all of them are.

Don't you think they already have breeding machines and an arsenal of egg cells on board?

Its an arc ship and the most logical choice would be to transport and produce future generations easy and effectively the artificial way. The purpose of the crew would be to clear the way, set up a new home and educate the children.

In a mission of this magnitude and importance nobody with a sane mind would rely on natural breeding to populate an unknown place in space to guarantee the survival of the human species.
