My theory is that she got knocked out, or fell asleep because she just woke up out of cryo, and had to get the ship outta there. I dunno what it was, but something bad.

My reasoning for this is look around her? She's not in a pod, she's not covered with anything. Do you honestly think they're gonna let somebody go for so many hundreds of years like that?

I was confused about this as well. I assumed that they would be encased in cryo-sleep pods, chambers or baths, but she was just lying out there, all suited up like she just took a nap.

As people previously mentioned, the cast's age doesn't matter as much as their personality and how well written they are.

Haha sorry to hear that, but I totally routed for you guys getting bi Cullen.

I remember you saying you love Solas though, wish he would have been bi for you but glad there's one romance you enjoy!

Yeah I know you did! <3 I loooooooooooooooooooved the Solas romance; if it were canon I would've played it like 20 times, same as I did Fenris x Hawke hahaha (and for that matter M!Shenko).

I think the issue some have is they're afraid the love interest options will be too young, so if you are an older gamer it will feel odd romancing a 20-something gal (I haven't heard anybody complaining about young male love interests).

Personally I don't care about character ages, looks, etc. at least not to a certain degree. If they're well-written and voice acted I'm totally cool with whatever is on the plate. For example, one of the reasons I don't care for Steve is because I find him incredibly boring and his story feels inappropriate (hitting on a grieving widower), but there's Kaidan, luckily, so yay.

My guess would be moved to get removed from cryo sleep.

Though the fact that nobody is there to greet her, not even a ship VI, does seem weird.

It remind me of Javik and his pod. He went into cyrostasis suited up and raring to go. The pod also had to open before he could sit up and it didn't take him long to come to. My guess is that Sally (my nickname for the lady PC) sat up after the pod opened, and that's when the scene started. Contrary to what the lore has tried to tell us, most people in ME coming out of cyro look like they just got up from a nap.

Edit @Cyonan: There is the voice of a VI/AI greeting Sally, but it was only shown during the livestream. For whatever reason, it didn't make it into the public trailer.

It's possible, but I recall that when she woke up, I hear some mechanical sounds, as if she was released from something.

I think that might just be the dramatic effect.   Plus she sits up too fast.   And if you're talking about after she sits up, that's the ship's VI/AI powering the ship up.

I'm also thinking she sounds kind'a British, for all of you Samantha lovers.  Something about the W in "We made it" sounds kind'a British like Samantha.

That makes a lot more sense.

Except the part where they didn't put it in the trailer. That makes no sense =P

@Nat:
Ah okay! Yeah, I see that. I'm 27 as of today and I personally don't think I would have a problem playing a character from the age of 18 and up. I'm positive that would be the youngest Bioware would go for because of their romance aspect. That would be opening a whole new bag of worms and they're much smarter than that, I think.

@Artemis I've always believed that romances that tie heavily into the story (and even if it is a romance that was added on as extra, my opinion is that Solas has the most story impacting romance next to Divine Cassandra) should be bi. Here is hoping they take not of this in the future as I know a lot of people feel the same way.

When it comes to the ages of possible LIs, I wouldn't care about age myself as long as they're 18 +, which I'm more than sure they would be . Otherwise, I am not bothered with ages. Including my PCS age as I have role played characters in game to be about 18-19 before so it'd be okay for me.

Weren't characters like Tali and Jack close to that age, as well? I don't have the time to read through that monster of an article right now, or this thread, but depending on the age of Ryder, we'll be experiencing nothing new/different here. My main Shepard romanced Tali, and he was almost ten whole years older than her; not many people ever had a problem with it.

Well from what I have heard we will be pretty green compared to Shepard.  Same for our squad.  Shep and crew were veterans.  We are trained but inexperienced.

Indeed - and maybe that's better? I mean:

More of a blank slate, maybe? (Better for people who roleplay!)

If they offer us more DIALOGUE-OPTIONS (again!), so that we can flesh out our character more and respond better to any given situation, than I am COOL with having a younger protag (despite being older than the protag...then again: I've NEVER felt the age I am, I felt older when I was younger (and behaved like that, too so I was quite the party pooper - no drinking myself to oblivion (and telling other people they shouldn't either), no just not doing homework, trying to keep the classroom quiet even if the teacher wasn't there (that's why I became the class representative/prefect several times)) and now I feel and empathize more with younger people (note: I am not out of my twenties yet, but almost!) because I've never been extremely serious (sure: restrained, mature - but never extremely serious) and gruffy like many adults (don't understand people like that, I just cant!)), hell:

I'd have voted for a younger protagonist if given the choice :)

greetings LAX

A lot of the privates would be in that age range or close to it. I left for basic training about a month and a half after my 18th birthday, and while there were some recruits who were older ( even a couple in their 30s), the majority were not long out of high school. I was 20 or 21 when I made Corporal, which is the first NCO (manager, roughly in civilian speak) rank. That was also fairly typical, with most Corporals or Sergeants being early to mid twenties. To give an idea of how young most people are, we had a guy in my platoon whose nickname was Old Man. He was maybe 32 years old when he was a Corporal.

Young adults in a fictional military organization aren't unrealistic...they should be common! The key though is that they're all people who've been in the military for four years or less, and so aren't in very senior positions. It takes a lot of time and experience to climb the organizational ladder, just like the corporate hierarchy in a typical civilian office. The most senior role that young enlisted personnel might be in would be fire team or squad / section leader (Corporals and Sergeants) and young officers (Lieutenants) commanding platoons.

An enlisted person may reach Corporal by the end of four year term of enlistment, and maybe (rare!) Sergeant. Gunnery Sergeant, which is the equivalent of ME's Gunnery Chief, is going to be out of range until probably the third term (8+ years in). Officers may reach Captain (ME's Staff Lieutenant I believe) by the end of four years in, but Major (ME's LCDR) is closer to 10.

Tl;dr: A young adult character is plausible if they're junior enlisted or a lieutenant not long from college and officer candidate school, but not as the ship's commanding officer or the platoon sergeant. Those two roles should be filled by more senior officers and NCOs, who in order to be plausible, probably should have been in the service for several years. Late 20s or 30s are better age ranges for characters with those roles as their background.

I see, well thanks for the comprehensive information. One thing is I was thinking actually in my brain of like 15-20 even but then I accidentally realized oh yeah this is a Bioware game not a JRPG and I forgot they have romance so yeah I was like you can't have romance in a Bioware game with -18 characters because that's all gravely immoral and wrong.

But I guess out of curiosity on a military dimension can like 15 year olds join the military or how does that work? I'd imagine at some point it is a case of physical strength being an issue.

Well Javik was a special case - we saw him literally gunning down reaper forces all the way to his chamber, so it would seem he wouldn't have time to slip into something more comfortable. But I always imagined Alliance technology isn't as jet-set and advanced as protheans, and they would've had a little more time to prepare with appropriate suits and chambers. Also, the VI lost power or something - the one that was overseeing Javik's and his peers' pods.

I wouldn't feel any emotional investment tbh.

I would not care if any of the cast members lived or died.

*sigh* I want to care

Seriously? You only care if the character lives or dies if they're of an age comparable to yours?

You have to be 18 to be in the military in the US, though perhaps it doesn't apply to the reaper wars consider the drama of the circumstances.

I was just wondering if a 15 year old could have the physical stamina/constitution to be a successful soldier anyway though basically. Or even a 14 year old, heck, 13 year old.

Realistically anybody on Earth during the Reaper war who could hold a gun was probably a resistance soldier.

Though this is a BioWare game so the minimum age for your squad will be 18 still for romance purposes if nothing else.

Well duh, my point was about 13 year olds just value as a combat soldier.

Like for me personally, I felt really brilliant and capable at 13/14 for all kinds of things(lol not combat though think like.. analysis or something) but in the US anyway you are coerced into the educational system which basically is a penal colony and runs until you are 18 and force you to not make use of those things and stuff which is imbecilic but I mean it is the US after all, they frequently have a very slave-like sub-human view of themselves and seem to be unable to note that not everyone is that way or wants to live that way.

18 is just an arbitrary number we put to decide "okay, you're an adult now".

My point about the Reaper war is that anybody who is past puberty should have the potential to be a capable soldier.

It's not really just the US that does that. Most countries we consider as "western" countries act like people aren't responsible enough to take care of themselves until the precise moment where they hit 18 years old.

I think it reflects a peculiar fear of younger people that older people often have, so they go "Oh well you can't do anything substantial until your 18" If they aren't in the labor force or whatever they don't have to worry about you kind of thing.

Whatever the purpose of education is, it's definitely not education.

As someone who is 2 years from 30, please don't make me feel creepy hitting on 20-year-old teammates. Please.

Also I don't empathize with children.

  Feeling concern

Then don't hit on them. And 20 years old is not a child.

Do we even know who the companions are?

There's Drak the Krogan, Cora a blonde human female biotic, probably some salarian, an Asari(probably the one we saw, there is most likely going to be a turian(not confirmed but it makes sense), and mystery member(rumor has it that it's a male synthetic, again not confirmed but I have little doubt in the leaks at this point). That's seven.
