These don't get nearly as much play on here as swords.  Probably because centuries of propaganda helped build up swords' rule of cool cred.

Reasons a space-maul is better than a space-sword:

You don't need to penetrate the armor to incapacitate the target.

You don't need a lot of extra technobabble bs technology to make them.

Just like rock beats scissors, maul breaks girly "monomolecular" blade in half, and shatters target's radius and ulna.

It rhymes with Space Balls.

One of the Krogans in ME3MP had a big ass hammer that could be biotically or electrically charged.  Would not mind having something like that in Andromeda.

Agreed, mauls are messier and bloodier. Swords are for refined gentlemen who know nothing of the word "berserk".

More evidence:

When you see this guy you think "that's one BMF"

When you see this guy you think "he must be going to comic con."

Sword beats Maul.

I point to the almighty Weapons Triangle as proof.

Now if your Maul is like a Swordreaver then it beats Swords since it reverses the Weapons Triangle.

I'd much rather see a Space Mall. Sure, Ryder might be out getting dirty while Pathfinding, but that doesn't mean that she can't be FASHIONABLE!

Can we have a car chase scene in it like this?

Yes, so long as that background music is playing the entire time...

Of course. Wouldn't be a proper mall car chase without it.

The funny thing is, I was originally going to post just the music but then decided to post the whole scene.

Also, there needs to be a Krogan pushing a cart overflowing with stuff that gets knocked over during the chase. Then after finally gathering all his items and placing them back into the cart, Ryder changes directions and leads the chase back towards the Krogan, knocking him and his stuff over once again. The Krogan then gets up, shakes his fist, and shouts "CURSE YOU, RYDERRRRRRRRRR!"

Can the items in the cart be cabbages?

Even better... space cabbages.

Also, Avatar: The Last Airbender was amazing. Extra space cabbage points for the reference.

Yes.  Whenever you put space in front of something, it is automatically superior.

The Gravity Hammer in Halo, backed up by the hammer wielded by the krogan warlord in Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, proves that space mauls are badass to the max. There is only one problem: they look clunky on smaller races, including humans, unfortunately...

...but I don't care. If I had a choice between a maul and a sword, I'd choose the maul, all the way.

Mauls/maces/morningstars can break swords.

Enough said.

In DA I prefer dwarven mauls to flimsy little swords.

I guess the Krogan could trade the silver in the sword for some tasty varren skewers after he hit that guy over the head with his hammer.

If we add mauls, they can't be stupidly oversized like that thing I see above. That's stupidly oversized even for a Krogan, unless perspective deceives me. VGs need more realistically sized and proportioned weapons. I have no idea why they are afraid to get off the anime train.

Maces, mauls, and halberds, are the equivalent of Armor Piercing rounds, and are designed as an answer to armor.

Swords are the equivalent of hollow-point rounds, and are designed only to penetrate and cut into flesh or light armor.

Both are solutions to different "problems".

As for having either of them in Sci-Fi settings, the usual reservations for bringing a sword to a gun fight apply.

As for their use as a secondary backup weapon, they are simply too massive and cumbersome.

Some sort of a "power-gauntlet" will have similar effect without the requirement to carry a massive piece of metal around.

If we played a Krogan that might have been fitting somehow (even if not very efficient), but as it is...
