Why? Having more companions diluted the writing content between them. ME2 had far too many. DAI as well, considering that we got three other major characters in the advisors outsite the team. I liked both games' companions, but having more companions isn't necessarily better.
I agree with you, but I think part of why ME2 is so well revered is because it has so. damn. many. characters. Basically, if you couldn't find 2-3 characters that you really loved in that game, the problem was with you.
So people were disappointed when the roster was greatly reduced in ME3. All the "deeper relationships" are useless if you're not on board with the smaller crew you got.
