Check out this interview with Aaryn Flynn at Gamespot, it's the most revealing one yet. And there's something terrorfying in it.

The GameSpot journalist heared rumours about gameplay features being stripped to meet the release date. Flynn admits there are some modest changes to gameplay features, so they can meet the release date.

I for one would rather play this game half a year later, than it being anything less than the developers want it to be. Please BioWare, take your time.

Your title is a bit misleading, because what you quoted are not Aaryn Flynn's words, but question posed to him. To which he replies: "Oh I haven't heard about any of that." I think "modest changes" he mentioned later are expected, when you get to see what works and what doesn't as they are deeper in development.

I added a line in the post, but seeing the journalist had the rumours about 'tensions' right, he might also know some inside information about stripping the features (I guess he doesn't just make that up). Of course Flynn responds diplomatically.

Agree with Rascoth. Basically...

"Y'know this is a Mass Effect game, so that kind of squad combat that you love, that third-person cover combat that you love, that moment-to-moment gameplay is all in there."

That's all I need to know and I bet it will still be as great as before :)

I'm just sad no one is addressing Aaron's time in therapy because of the ME3 endings reaction. That is seriously, so messed up.

There are always cuts during development. DA:O, a game they spent 5 years making, had cuts. Doesn't necessarily mean the game won't be great.

Lol you quoted the question, not the answer. That makes it seem a lot more drastic than it is. Another thing, this always happens during any game development, stuff gets cut if it doesn't work/fit/live up to expectations/is too much work/too expensive. It's nothing to worry about as long as a developer makes the right choices to end up with a good end product. Even if he had answered 'yeah we're cutting some stuff' that would not really be drastic at all.

No need to be overly worried or jump to conclusions until you've actually got some details or have a game that's ready to be judged.

Let's hope this doesn't end up as ME3 2.0

Basically every game ever has features cut to meet the release date.

Well, every game that gets released, anyway.

Again, not trying to be a 'The End is Near'-prophet, but in my experience this could also be a very diplomatic answer for 'Yes, we need to make a few cuts we really rather wouldn't make'. My point: just take some extra time, screw the release date. About quoting the answer: I'm quoting the rumour that appearantly goes around.

For the therapy, that's something I don't feel like 'discussing'.

Every game goes through this process. You think every other game turns out exactly like the developers intended it from the start? Hell, Obsidian has never put out a game that wasn't severely gutted to make release.

Just edit the thread title so it's not as misleading.

Flynn also opens his response to the question with "Oh, I haven't heard about any of that."  Convenient that you just left that part out.  Modest changes are modest changes, not "stripping."

Here;s the actual response:

"Oh I haven't heard about any of that. We've had a couple of modest changes, but nothing radical. All of the emphasis to move towards the free-form exploration, all that's still in there and very grounded in the mechanics."

Of course it is, people are just pointing out this is always the case. What's your favorite BW game? Guaranteed it has a bunch of stuff cut from it.

David Gaider once said that they cut so much content from Baldur's Gate 2 that he was convinced everyone would hate the game. Baldur's Gate 2.

"We're lucky to have an amazing publisher in EA"

it's like they're there behind the curtain threatening his mom

nah but seriously the therapy :( that really sucks. I didn't mind the ME3 endings, whatever your opinion of them was the devs are people and didn't/don't deserve harassment and stuff (I'm not equating criticism/disappointment with harassment btw, of course a lot of people who didn't like the endings behaved fine).

Cut content is a reality of any major game, so the fact that things were cut isn't itself any indication of problems. The thing about the "just take the extra time you get everything you want" is that the game would take ages to finish if it did that. Most developers always feel like there's something more they could add that they would rather not cut, but they have to for the sake of actually ever releasing a finished product.

It's better to judge the game based on what we get rather than what they originally had planned out.

SP is all drama anyway, Biower should just put something out and focus on the MP.

News of the hour!  Flynn says large parts are being cut out to make release date!  Lord Harrowmount would never have done such a thing!

Unfortunately, to make the release date, Bioware had to drop mutton-chop support from the character creator.

This, and by the way, that's exactly why I am perfectly fine with not getting a lot of information at this point. Better to let the devs work in pesce and give them the freedom to change things and to adjust without worrying about stuff that has basically already been reviewed by the public because it worked in a 5 minute trailer segment.

I mean, in principle, I am withe the OP, I'd also rather wait longer than have a rushed game (and I'd not complain if they pushed release back even further, if that's what they think they need) but with over 4 years of dev time, I don't think ME:A is in danger of that, at least not according to the info we have a this point. We'll only know for sure when the game is out of course.
