Just saying. Please don't use the family as just cannon fodder for tragedy Bioware.
Hope the Ryder family fares better than the Hawke one....

Family can be interesting if done as in DAO. (meet them before dramatic times, decide what is the relationship with our characters) In DA2... meh.
Ogre kill random guy not even two minutes from starting the game.
Old woman "HOW COULD YOU LET YOU BROTHER DYE!!!!"
Hawke confused: "Whait, I have a brother? And who are you?"

I felt completely disconnected by Hawke's family. ![]()

Putting aside the exaggeration, if they wanted to kill off one sibling they should've done later in the game, not in the prologue.

Family isn't interesting unless it's full of tragedy. That's where you and I depart in theory.
The Hawke family was perfect. If it was happy at all, DA2 would've been a dramatically worse game.
Now, I don't actually disagree - the family stuff was one of my favourite bits of DA2, and really helped with the more intimate, personal story they were trying to tell (and I actually liked how everything Hawke did seemed to blow up in her face; it was a refreshing change of pace from being the God-hero of the world all the time) - but I do think the whole 'one sibling dies' bit at the start could've been handled a bit better. You just don't have enough time with the character beforehand to properly appreciate the tragedy of their death, and it drives a wedge between the player and Hawke, emotionally.
I remember reading that the original plan - had they not had to put the whole game together in, like, a year - was to have a prologue in Lothering, a little like the City Elf Origin in DA:O. I think that would've been just the thing to give Carver's/Bethany's (but mostly Carver's, 'cause I'm all stabby rogue, all the time) untimely demise the weight it needed.

Indeed--it's actually making me rather excited, contrary to what you'd perhaps expect. We are seeing Dragon Age II themes aren't we...
I've come to really appreciate what Dragon Age 2 tried to do over the years - there's a good argument to be made for it being BioWare's most original game, ever - and I'd love to see those ideas explored again in a game that they weren't forced to slap together in slightly less than a year.
Hell, even if they just bring back the DA2 dialogue wheel with some refinements, I'll be pleased. That game's 'personality' system was pretty remarkable when you look at just how in-depth it was.

Ok, that Ryder will have a family is now semi-confirmed.
My theory is; that we have a sibling (maybe that someone is in the N7 program if that isn't our Ryder in another costume) and he or she will be one of our antagonists. I have no proof or anything just a theory but I think it would be nice to have someone close to us as an antagonist and not just a person who dies for drama and conflict but someone with a real purpose.

Tragedy only works if I actually give a damn what happens to the person.
Of which I did not in DA2 with Hawke's family because they were so horribly underdeveloped as characters.

I don't - I am just not into family stories (sorry: Family may play some role, but it shouldn't be part of the ****** main story...I like the Sheppard (Spacer! - I don't know how the other origins work, I've only ever used that one!) way: Family sends you e-mail, might show up a couple of times but most of the times is not present!)...those didn't work in Fallout (sorry Bethesda!), and I don't think they'll work here ![]()

I get this argument, I really do, because it applies to so many games and movies. I know what you're saying, but I just don't think that's what happened in DA2 at all. I find they were developed, and given sufficient screen time to voice their opinions. They were a full-fledged companion you could take out on quests, for crying out loud, replete with party banter, in addition to being there in the prologue, in addition, to having more side chat scenes at home (ones which duly referenced the specific things you both went through ON SCREEN, and also you could give them gifts, etc) - at least two or three, along with a special "retrieve estate documents" quests the other part companions didn't have.
So I don't know why people say they weren't developed or given sufficient screen time.

They were only developed if you played through multiple times and thus had meta knowledge about them.
Bethany & Carver each had literally 10 lines before their death. 10 Lines isn't enough to develop a character. Carver was essentially a whiny brat for 5 min then he dies, Bethany just never develops any character at all until Act 1 (which is better than Carver's whininess), she is just scared and running.

This is where I think you are misunderstanding. People aren't saying the characters never get development, they are saying the characters don't get any development before they die. Looking at it from the perspective of having already beat the game 3 times and thus knowing who Bethany and Carver are isn't the important view point. The important view point is that I just started playing this game, 20 min in someone dies. At that point in time why should I care? They had 10 lines and no real character yet.

Wait... you mean the sibling that dies in the prologue while running away from Lothering? I was talking about the one that survives.

Sometimes when I think back about the Bethany posts on the forums I am reminded of the Crusader Kings 2 peeps who marry their sisters and make a dozen inbred children.
(I know that's what not what you were saying, it just reminded me of those old posts).
