I could have done without Leandra's death, it just took the tragedy of Hawke to ridiculous levels.

But I'm not against the idea of a Ryder sibling, it all depends on what role they play in the story. I'd prefer to avoid clichés as much as possible.

Same role as Shepard's mom, except you can actually visit/see them. That's all we ask, it gets kind of hard to believe that these hero messiah's keep appearing in BioWare games, where they have very little personal history or family to speak of but become these magnificent heroes/heroines who are infowlable. If Lavellan had someone anyone who could have commented on her upbringing, with anecdotes about her more awkward moments in life, things that her present day companions don't know about that wouldn't look so saintly to her followers, It would have done wonders for her character, something I hope BioWare and its writers know realize as I assume they themselves have family, or are rising one, and see that those personal touches really take the character and the story to new heights.

So I don't get it....you don't want a story? Because if it happened any other way, the story wouldn't have worked. It was the story. You remove what happened, the story doesn't work anymore.

That particular game no because everything was stacked against you. It wasn't just Leandra. It was the death of the father, the loss of one sibling then a loss of the other sibling not long after then the loss of the mother, leaving only Hawke by themselves, more or less. There was no way to make the game anything but a drama. I love stories and read them often but i know what i'm going into practically from the beginning. Maybe not the how but i know what kind of story, in general, i'm getting. With RPGs, if true to their pen/paper beginnings, are supposed to be decided, ultimately, by the actions of the players. The GM might have a general idea what to expect but it's between chance and the player on how the story's going to pan out.

In life, you choose the destiny of your family? Hardly...

As noted above, the odds are stacked unfavorably. This is an RPG. At the very minimal, the player should have been the deciding factor for the sibling's survival in the Deep Roads, if they came along. If the choice was allowed, i probably wouldn't bemoan so much.

Family can be interesting if done as in DAO. (meet them before dramatic times, decide what is the relationship with our characters) In DA2... meh.

Ogre kill random guy not even two minutes from starting the game.

Old woman "HOW COULD YOU LET YOU BROTHER DYE!!!!"

Hawke confused: "Whait, I have a brother? And who are you?"

I felt completely disconnected by Hawke's family. -_-
