Too true, I don't.
But when your aliens are just humans in costumes... I don't find their turtle shells and blue skin what makes them "interesting".
A character is interesting regardless of these superficial qualities.
The Rachni and Thorian were probably the most "alien" things in ME.
I'll take one Thorian and one Rachni Queen on my ship please.
Well, you kind of hit the nail on the head. In science fiction, aliens are bound to either be bad imitations of humanity or truly alien, out there things. And more often than not, the latter only function because of limited exposure. It would take a lot of effort and skill to make something truly alien and keep it that way. I fear that if they stuck a rachni queen on the ship she'll just end up displaced to the initial category of carbon copy of a human.
