This has always been a topic many on these forums seem to despise. They don't want to play as a human. They didn't like how "human-centric" ME2 and ME3 became. There are so many other species worth exploring and playing that we shouldn't limit ourselves to the human experience.

I'll tell you why that understanding is wrong and why BioWare will never endorse it. Mass Effect doesn't make any sense without the human lens. There is nothing to ground us in this franchise without having some form or relatability. Mass Effect has also always been about the underdog story and trying to make something out of oneself.

MEA may not be a sequel to the ME trilogy, but it's a spiritual successor in every sense of the word as it's going back to the fundamentals of what Mass Effect stands for: Exploration, Discovery, Survival, and the Human Experience.

While Mass Effect may have many other species and deals with intergalactic issues, it's still very much a human tale. Mac Walters has already stated MEA will maintain that understanding, and it doesn't appear that Mass Effect will ever change course.

I don't personally see anything wrong with that. On the contrary, I think Mass Effect is far more interesting understanding these other lifeforms through the human eye, rather than BioWare trying to make some compelling tale from a perspective we can never understand or fully appreciate. We are human. It only makes sense to embrace that to further enhance the storytelling in Mass Effect.

Considering I can roleplay as a non Humanoid species of the opposite gender in pen and paper games, I don't imagine as I really need the character to physically resemble me in order to relate to them.

but then seeing as how some people around here are talking about not being able to relate to a PC of the opposite gender or one even of a different age than their own, I suppose I'm the weird one.

Always playing as a human is boring, i would rather play as a Quarian the true master race.

Having a Human only Protags was the best decision Bioware made for this game, we didnt need another repeat of Inquisition where different races were no more than lame reskins and added nothing to the story. In the end they only watered it down.

My view of most of Humanity is less than flattering, to say the least.

Roleplaying as a non-humanoid and actually understanding that non-humanoid are two, entirely separate issues. No matter how well you roleplay, you'll always have a human bias because you are human. This is the point. It doesn't matter what you or BioWare does, as the explanation of these species from their perspective will always be somewhat superficial as it's created through a human lens.

This has nothing to do with physical appearance either. Rather, this is a mental and psychological understanding of how humans function and why it makes sense to maintain a perspective we clearly already have versus trying to make one up we can't relate to.

I have no problem playing as a human or experiencing the story from a human perspective.  However the Mass Effect Universe itself should not revolve around humans.  It kind of got that way when we became the Reapers' chosen race for this cycle.  In Andromeda I want humans to just be one of the newcomers from the Milky Way, no more and no less.

Deal with it. Don't be a human monster and you'll be fine.

For me being human-only is the worst decision Bioware made for this game. We are in the perfect opportunity right now, since all races are now in the same boat, metaphorically and literally.

Also, I love that they brought race options back to Dragon Age in DAI.

We can understand the aliens perfectly. One of the big things in Mass Effect is how universal "human nature" is.

Yeah, we keep being told we are just a part of a larger galactic community. Would be nice to actually see that instead of having the entire universe revolve around humans.

And yet, I guarantee that you cannot roleplay a non-humanoid without projecting human emotions and biases. So basically, you end up with a human disguised as a whatsitsface. Roleplaying, in my mind, is a work of empathy. Roleplaying something truly alien is impossible as empathy is not possible.

I have no problem roleplaying the opposite gender, or people drastically different from me in other ways. Humans are inherently interesting... to humans. The same cannot be said of any alien I know of.

I'm holding out judgement on humanity as a whole. If we're still around a thousand years from now, we're probably doing well.

This is the reason why the Inquisitor is of Bioware lamest protagonist though. Every other race besides Human felt tacked on(well they were but still).

Inquisitor is easily my favorite protagonist out of them, HoF, and Hawke.

Nothing can be written outside of the human perspective...

And when you are not something directly... like a man being a woman.  You're not roleplaying a woman.. .you're roleplaying what you think a woman to be.

I don't mind playing as a human, and I agree with the OP about why should play as a human protag.

But playing as a human, and the entire story propelling humanity above the other species like ME3 did, are two different things, and I do NOT want a repeat of the latter.

We are all entering this new galaxy together, so all the species really should be on a more equal footing to a certain extent (I am interested to see how the krogan and salarian may work together). I dont want the humans to be the centre of every little thing, to be the leaders and to be the instigators of everything and just the same epicentre special nonsense.

It comes off as uber patriotic and its like Michael Bay had a say in it (we need more humans!).

Yes to human protag, I'm fine with it and not being an alien.

But humans are jerks, so please can that be reflected somewhat instead of them being the master, perfect race?!

The majority of people like playing humans, in every game where there's a bevy of options I'm preeeeetttyyyy sure the humans take the biggest piece of the cake every time. Combine that with the fact that they'd prefer to spend their resources elsewhere and tada! You have a humancentric story.

Emotion is just emotion, it's not unique to a species. Any organic species with higher brain functions should be capable of showing the same array of emotions us Humans do unless the lore explains why they're different like Vulcans in Star Trek.

The only exception would be robots, but I can pull the act off pretty well if I wish. I can sort of suppress emotions for a time.
