If all that is left is polishing, why actual no game play?

I suspect the DAI Crestwood Fiasco has made BioWare very wary of sharing non-finalized preview content. Maybe after the "ME3 endings therapy" that Aaryn mentioned, they simply don't want to deal with anymore fan BS, provoked or not.

The Witcher 3 downgrade wasn't pretty either.

ME3 ending therapy is useless, they first have to admit they have a problem.

Fallout 4's approach doesn't work for ME because for ME we knew it was coming when nobody was really sure about Fallout 4 happening and it really WAS a surprise.

I just think Bioware simply doesn't have the best marketing plans. It was the same for DAI.

"This early."

Primitive, this game has been in development since 2012 and it was soft-announced in 2014.

So what? We're still nine months from release.

What's the advantage of releasing a gameplay vid now over releasing one in, say, November?

Nine months from release, Bioware was showing the Sur'Kesh mission of Mass Effect 3. And they had a lot more to do than just polishing.

Because BSN would tear it apart and say it looks like ****, creating 200 threads about eyebrows, ugly protagonists, and frostibie engine amongst tumultuous whining.

Aaron Flynn just barely opened up about his therapy bills after the fan's reactions to the ME3 ending.

Of course they're being cautious.

Because there's no point in releasing gameplay this early?

Pretty much.  At least this way, they can show more new gameplay at the same time - like they did with DAI - instead of having to spread it thin over a longer period.

Because the more hype they can generate, the more copies they will sell on day one before people realize what a poor excuse of a Mass Effect game they've made.

Jesus Christ, I hope this is a joke, no one could possibly be this thin-skinned.

I mean, beside Donald Trump.

The Witcher 3 downgrade is easily explicable; consoles. That is probably the only negative thing we can say about CD Projekt, especially when compared to EA.

How exactly would a minute or two of walking around on a nondescript planet with no context have spoiled anything?

With this mentality, they've already spoiled everyone by even showing up at E3.

I didn't follow TW3 pre launch, beyond eagerly tracking the release date, so I wasn't privy to the "downgrade" issue at release. Plus, I play on PS4, so I probably wasn't victimized like the PC crowd was.

As to the MEA team admitting the ME3 ending problem, Aaryn Flynn actually specifically called it out as the hardest lesson he'd learned in his career, but an extremely valuable one. He said improving upon what happened was a driving force for him with MEA.

Mac Walters also admitted a need to improve upon the endings, but did it in a petulant sort of way, like a preemptive confrontation.

Well in that case people would be complaining that all the gameplay was two minutes of the protag walking around a nondescript planet with no context, and saying that Bioware must have something to hide.

You mean the game that he poured countless hours into, creating a game to support his family every day, pouring his passion into was rejected by fans for 15 minutes of bad ending? Resulting in death threats, money losses (for hastily returned games,) tons of his friends and comrades leaving Bioware, and cynical reactions to anything Mass Effect related for years to come?

Being surrounded by negativity wears a person down.

Considering all the threads crying about an ugly female Ryder... I dare not think of the thread possibilities, if they shown gameplay... God people freaked out over one video of Skyrim, when a dragon grabbed a giant, then let it go in mid air. People went "It looks stiff! Where's the ragdoll effects? You ruined Elder Scrolls, Bethesda. You bastards!!! " All from 1 G-D trailer... Aaand this is why real aliens don't visit us. They don't want to deal with primitives.

As to the hype question...wouldn't that hype in say November be a better primer for a game going to market in March?

Think of it this way, by November the game has to have gone gold, or be close to going gold to go through printing and ratings in a complete state. If they show the game there, they can't change anything and that eliminates the complaint of "this wasn't in the game" type of comments.

You also contain that hype factor closer to the games release, and more people will be thinking about Mass Effect then.

A few people likely would, but most of us would be studying that two minutes of gameplay. It would be getting dissected in 15 different threads, at this very moment, as we tried to learn all we could from it. I think maybe that's what they didn't want.

I know you're not this ignorant. They need pre-orders. They rely on them for several reasons.

well, that and their gary-stu protagonist, the Free DLC plans they did and then reneging on the idea of DLC by making two big DLC packs...

No company is perfect, let's just get that out of the way here.

I meant more that the early communication caused problems.

If stringing along fans with bull alone can keep pre-orders and hype rolling in ... well, it makes sense to only use that until the last moment. After DA2 they obviously need to show a little more before release, but not half a year before.

Pre-orders can still be made in November.  I don't think retailers stop taking pre-orders before release.

Yep.  I mean, here we are, in a thread that basically suggests that showing around a minute of new footage is a sign that they've got nothing to show.
