If all that is left is polishing, why actual no game play?

Because reasons. Honestly everyone guess are as good as mine.

I don't really think the game has serious issues and that's the reason why they wont show anything. But, we can't help but wonder why the heck they keep tossing these teasers/trailers and promising to hang on for more info on [insert spring/fall here].

It's not a Bethesda approach either, because if it was they wouldn't have showed that teaser thing on 2014 and released concepts on N7 and then more trailers past E3 and this E3.

Beth kept their mouths shut until BE3 past year when they confirmed all rumors. Bio haven't done this, because they already confirmed a new ME was in the works with the E3 2014 teaser thing.

Also DAI was criticized for cutting out gameplay features between the 2013 Pax Prime demo and the final game, so they likely want to avoid that again.

A better approach to that is simply not showing something that may not end up on the final game. At this point I'm sure they have some features or something that they don't plan to change or remove from the game. Surely they could've showed 5-8 min of gameplay of a random quest or a "fake" quest (like CDPR did with Witcher 3).

The Witcher 3 downgrade is easily explicable; consoles. That is probably the only negative thing we can say about CD Projekt, especially when compared to EA.

CDPR said plenty of things pre-release that they later backtracked on: Iorveth being in the game, full Redkit mod tools being available post-release, doubling down on the visual downgrade not being a thing etc.

Reading between the lines indicate EA doesn't want BioWare to hype up & show off Andromeda too much yet, as there are several other important releases in between Andromeda's release and now. So basically EA says 'Don't do any gameplay or anything to draw attention away from our other releases, after that is done you can go crazy'. Makes sense from a publisher perspective, even if it means we don't get to see gameplay until later in the year.

Nine months from release, Bioware was showing the Sur'Kesh mission of Mass Effect 3. And they had a lot more to do than just polishing.

True, but that wasn't what I asked. I asked why releasing the video earlier would help. As you note, a gameplay vid now wouldn't prove much.

Lack of polish is a great reason not to show gameplay. Gameplay is where polish would make he most difference.

I think what is meant by the "Bethesda approach" is to have a huge information blow out at one point reasonably close to release, like six months or so.

It would give players an actual feel of the game. Something that just showing pretty pictures and talking about it vaguely doesn't do.

As for why now, E3 is the biggest gaming convention of the year so it is the best time to show your product.

There's a high probability that reports that the game is mostly finished are false. Afterall, nearly ten months of polishing is nigh unbelievable. ME1 didn't take shape until less then a year before release, considering the materials released in 2006 were nothing like the final game.

Because the more hype they can generate, the more copies they will sell on day one before people realize what a poor excuse of a Mass Effect game they've made.

And the fact that they don't think they need to drum up hype that way does nothing to inspire your confidence that it might actually be good?

This is a possibility, given this quote from Flynn:

EA has this amazing line of game releases coming up. We come later, so we have more time to show great gameplay. But the good news is that everything we showed in that trailer is right from the game, so none of that is made by CG or anything like that.

it takes longer to develop a good-looking game on PS4 and Xbox One compared to the last gen.

Pre-orders can still be made in November.  I don't think retailers stop taking pre-orders before release.

More time=more pre-orders, and waiting until November means people have less money to drop on things like games(that come out in February or March) for themselves because of Christmas. Stop being willfully obtuse.

I'm not sure why so many posters here don't seem to get this. If E3 didn't matter then developers would stop showing up.

I know you're not this ignorant. They need pre-orders. They rely on them for several reasons.

And November is too late for pre-orders? I don't see how that works. Someone who won't pre-order in five months wouldn't be all that likely to pre-order with an additional four months, would he?

You mean the game that he poured countless hours into, creating a game to support his family every day, pouring his passion into was rejected by fans for 15 minutes of bad ending? Resulting in death threats, money losses (for hastily returned games,) tons of his friends and comrades leaving Bioware, and cynical reactions to anything Mass Effect related for years to come?

Being surrounded by negativity wears a person down.

And yet people can work at Comcast, Monsanto and Bank of America, three incredibly hated companies, without needing therapy.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to slam Aaryn Flynn here, I'm just more inclined to believe he went to therapy for other, more legitimate reasons than having to take crap from upset fans.

Why would they be dropping money in November when payment isn't taken until just before release or day of release?

Although I was disappointed by the lack of a real trailer, I'm fine with it; if they really aren't that far along and need more time to work on it, I wholeheartedly support this.

No that just shows they've become confident that people will buy their game on name recognition alone, no matter how bad it ends up being.

So you've never pre-ordered a game before? You have to put money down to pre-order at a B&M store like GameStop, which is where most pre-orders are made. And a lot of people just pay for the whole game when they pre-order.

Guarantee the all of those employers have people in therapy..... do you not realize that major companies hire therapists on a corporate level and offer therapy to their employees as part of their insurance? Also, those incredibly hated companies don't put their heart, soul, and creative artistry into their work all day every day.

I don't get why you think therapy is a four-letter-word. Therapy is great. I had to have some after my dad had a heart attack and spent a month in intensive care. I had to have more when me and my husband separated. Those are two very different things.

I think his reasoning to go into therapy is legitimate, because how would you feel if you were creating something highly anticipated on a global scale, you released it, and EVERYBODY criticized it? Nobody gave it praise, despite 85% of the game being very enjoyable (at least I found it to be,) everyone focused on a flaw you glossed over, hoping everyone would think it's great, but it rubbed everyone the wrong way.

All I am saying is, quit being stone-hearted in thinking that a passionate person like Aaryn is a thin-skinned guy for needing therapy for mass-disgust at his work. And understand that he would be cautious after all that backlash by not revealing too much.

In my experience with brick & mortar stores, you pay a small deposit when pre-ordering and pay the rest on release day.  Besides, I think the majority of people go through Amazon, where payment isn't taken at all until it's just about to ship, and there's always the chance of it arriving a couple of days early.

By N7 Day 2016 Bioware's going to make a lot of hardened ME vets/cynics feel like a virgin, touched for the very first time, including all the whining virgins up in here.

If they don't, I'll resign my profile and never post on the forum again.  Anyone want to make a profile bet with me?  Let's make it interesting.

I'm feeling like Zaeed reading this thread.

What's the actual mechanism here? I'm as fond as anyone of explanations that boil down to "gamers are idiots," but I don't see how dropping a worse video this month works out better than dropping a better one in November. Will people somehow not see it in November?

That's all well and good, but what about the people that don't know that N7 Day even exists? The amount of eyes that will be on BioWare on some random day in November is smaller than the number of eyes who were on that stage at E3. Sure, they said "We'll show more in the fall" or whatever, but how many people who aren't already invested in the ME franchise will remember that?
