I gave a reasoning in the first paragraph of what you originally quoted.

You're right. I should have discussed that, even though I didn't find it convincing.

Five months from now, people who saw the video we got would (hopefully) remembe that this ME:A thing is coming out in a few months. If they saw a gameplay vid instead, what more would they think?

I can barely remember the gameplay vids I saw at E3 now.

Would you rather have your ad placement during the Superbowl(E3), or during a Lifetime soap opera(N7 day). E3 is a much larger and broader advertisement platform. The people who know about N7 day and the smaller gaming cons are likely interested in the game/genre already.

But we're not talking about skipping the Super Bowl. Mass Effect was at E3, remember? We're only talking about two different ads. Again, by November, will it matter which one they ran?

And if my product wasn't on sale until Christmas, I'm not sure a Super Bowl ad buy would be sensible.

I'm just wondering how long people can blame the fans for BioWare's poor management, advertising, lack of confidence, et al

E3 is where you come out guns blazing and ready to slay the naysayers.  It's not the event where you hide under the freaking bed out of fear of backlash.  Just look at the flack COD: Infinite Warfare got and yet they had enough confidence in their product to showcase gameplay.  Sure people still bitched, but before it was even revealed to be COD they were blown away.  Which makes me believe these people just hate it because it's COD.  However, most people admit to changing their tune and saying they would actually give it a shot. I'm not even a COD fan and the gameplay was enough to pique my interest in the title.

Anyway, BW being too scared to show their product because "The fanbase is just so toxic" sounds like a BW problem.  IMO.

Maybe part of their post ME3 therapy was the idea that they shouldn't straight up lie to people in every interview for several months before release.  They realize that the more they say, the more likely they are to succumb to the temptation, so they've decided to say as little as possible for as long as possible.

Granted, now that Casey's gone there would naturally be less of that going on, but someone was bound to step in it.

Pretty much every AAA game in recent memory has had gameplay shown at the E3 before their release. Its the most sensible place to market and advertise your game. Why wouldn't BioWare take advantage of it?

The most recent info dump has been widely reported on. And either way, they've got people talking, haven't they? Whatever they're doing is working.

No it isn't, ME:A is getting no near as much coverage as the games that show off gameplay i.e. God of War, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Gears of War 4, For Honor. The most successful games at E3 are the ones which show of their gameplay, just relying on word of mouth at E3 with no gameplay to back it up isn't going to cut it.

Honestly, this is only apparent to you. But you're rooting for the game to fail for some reason. I guess to say you told us so or something.

Its hard to root for a game when they've yet to show off any gameplay.

What will probably happen is MEA will be Bioware's most successful game yet. It's already more popular than DA by virtue of being Mass Effect.

How do you know that?

They've got the BSN all hot and bothered, although if you want to claim that that's not an achievement, I won't disagree.

I'll note again that it only looks like a failure to you because you are convinced that it must be, and that you very clearly need it to be. Which is weird, but again, you do you. Once they do roll out some real coverage - possibly at a different con or a different conference or even their own press conference where they can be the main event with no other games stealing any of the spotlight, I predict that the hype train will make up for all lost time. Mass Effect is a lot more popular than you seem to think.

In any case, how do I know what?

I suspect it will *probably* be their most successful game because I have a functioning brain and a sense of pattern recognition. I know it will sell better and be more popular than Dragon Age because every Mass Effect game has sold better and been more popular than Dragon Age. People like shooty space games more than stabby sword games.

Seems like you're seeing what you want to see.

On Youtube, the Mass Effect E3 trailer has more views than all the games you listed except God of War (which has sold more than the Mass Effect series). Resident Evil 7, Days Gone, Dishonored 2 who all showed a lot more gameplay also have a lot less views.

When you go to IGN's main E3 event page there are 3 articles on MEA with hundreds of comments each (God of War also has 3, Horizon and GeOW only 1, For Honor has none). Polygon also has a bunch of MEA articles, and they have more comments than most other articles. More articles at Kotaku, Gamespot etc. Neogaf has 3 threads about MEA, in addition to the pre-existing Community thread. There's plenty of coverage despite the lack of gameplay.

The purpose of E3 is to generate interest and discussion for the whole public not just their own forums.

Are you serious? The lack of gameplay footage is the reason why Bioware is being drowned out at E3. Bioware would've generate a lot more interest in the game if they actually bothered to show off gameplay at the largest gaming convention in the world rather than just talking about it. E3 is the time were all the game dev's bring out the big guns.

But showing off at E3 is the best way to maximize the chances of success, Bioware didn't.

I wouldn't put too much stock into the word "polishing" here. It can mean anything from "there's just some kinks to iron out" to "drats, this thing is still crashing all over the place".

It is a dopey fan theory (we got nothing else to really talk about here). But if there is a chance that is the case then I don't see how it's the fault of the fan base. It's not like BW is a unique and special snowflake when dealing with demanding fan bases.

IMO, BW is just lying about the polishing and they simply don't have anything worth showcasing.  The entire EA conference sucked anyway.

Didn't alot of folks from the ME team leave? There was a huge vacuum left after ME3 and for awhile the developers was stuck as to how to proceed for the next game. Maybe the hard truth is that this game isn't ready to be showcased yet. It's easy to put together a few clips for a trailer, but presenting solid gameplay for the game itself? If it wasn't shown at E3, it simply means the game isn't ready.

Even a year and half ago ( i think) they was only showing us concept designs for the next game and even then i think that was 2 years after ME3....so i think with the team itself being depleted, scrambling to create a team to develop and to come up with a storyline for the next game all impacted the game itself. Sure it's in development, but just looking at the timeline of this entire process, Bioware took a massive hit when half the team left...so it's understandable that the game wasn't E3 ready yet.

ME3 wasn't so bad, so I'm not that worried about it, I want a good story.

A more destructible environment would be cool though, perhaps grab flamble stuff as a biotic and throw it at enemies.... There were soem destructible containers in ME1, would like to see a return of that with a more modern utilisation of it and perhaps variation in size and variety.

A more destructible environment, though I doubt it will happen. Some covers that don't last forever. And, I kind of want to see a loot system even if I know a lot of people hated it, perhaps also send in some people to collect a major treasurethrove after liberating it... After all, we're supposed to have more limited resources in a new galaxy. It would be more like a Survival game in that sense...

A lot of this might be that we're using "polishing" to mean different things. I'd sure hope that the combat would be a lot better in five months than it is now. Is that "polishing"?

I'm trying to remember any other game that decided not to show off game play at the last E3 before release and the only game I can think of is GTA V, while I love Bioware  they are no Rockstar.

I'm sure that when the game is released I will enjoy it, but there is no way this game is out by Q1 2017.

I'm not worried, they will show something when they wil feel ready but then I'm not going to pre-order the game so it's hardly a problem for me.

If you don't trust BW for making a great ME game then don't preorder and wait for the final product. If you preorder and the game is not what you expected it to be then the fault is all your as none forced you to commit your money for something you haven't seen.

I'm not really sure what Bioware means with "polishing" so I'm not even going to bother to read into it much. They seem satisfied with their progress so far and until they tell us otherwise there's no reason for me to stress over it. I was disappointed there was so little at Bioware info at E3 (I wanted a little about the new IP, too) but I liked what little we did get.

People seem do be debating on whether Bioware is lying or not regarding the "polishing" but even if they are what can we do about it? It could be that they're telling the truth, they could be lying, or maybe they're just overly optimistic about their time frame... Or maybe they're telling the truth but what they mean with "polish" is different than what we interpret it as. We have no way of knowing. For me, personally, it doesn't matter. There's too little information to actually speculate about it right now. Instead of pre-emptively deciding the game sucks or will be delayed until kingdom come or whatever, wouldn't it be better to remain neutral? It's not too late to get hyped or to criticize when we've actually seen gameplay or more trailers in a few months time.

I agree it sucks to have to wait so long for more information but at least that information is going to come this year. Even if the game does get delayed again, chances are high it will just be a few months, not a years worth delay, and EA/Boware are unlikely to cancel the game entirely at this stage.

I'm personally glad they seem to be taking the anti-DAI approach.  DAI carpet bombed us and frankly diminished the experience.  I suspect we'll be getting small tidbits here and there through the summer...and probably a decent gameplay video for N7 day - 4 to 5 months before game launch.

Probably just a change in marketing strategy, especially since the game is a new jumping on point in the series and they kind of want to keep it under wraps until they can do the big reveal on N7 day without overloading people with possible spoilers/etc.

                                                                                    <<<<<<<<<<(0)>>>>>>>>>>

The last N7 Day was a big flop regarding ME:A news... because it was all about N7 and that's why it's called N7 Day.

Expect nothing to very little.
