... If I were in charge I honestly would close the BSN.

Closing Off-Topic already fostered more unique conversations within the community and made this place 20% more exclusive.

Interesting video, he has kind of a funny-sounding voice

He's yelling into a dark and empty room though; the hateful trolls who make up the vast majority of the forum (but likely a tiny minority of people who actually buy, play, and enjoy BioWare games) don't really listen to reason and have exactly 0% compassion within them. They will continue to fume bitterly over the end of a game that was released four years ago (an ending that I really liked, as did every real life Mass Effect fan I encounter). They will use ridiculous terms like "EAWare" and "SJW" and insult the developers. They'll make sexist comments and homophobic comments and I've even seen racist and anti-Islamic comments.

BioWare shoots itself in the foot by taking a "hands off" approach when it comes to regulating this forum. If I were in charge I honestly would close the BSN, but then I suppose all the hate would spill elsewhere. This forum could certainly use much tighter modding; there are multiple members that are repeat offenders who should've been permanently banned long ago. Unfortunately, the actual developers have no control over the forums (it's, I suppose, whoever's in charge of marketing), and it's very telling that the developers themselves have had to abandon the forums while the trolls run rampant without repercussions.

Yeah, it's pretty clear why you aren't in charge. That's exactly the wrong direction, censorship never works regardless of wether or not people are trolls or not.

At the very least on a determined board most people can discuss in peace and those that are scum can be banned. The bad press would not disappear it would just flood to Facebook and Twitter in higher amounts.

I would like to watch the video, but for me the link goes to a video that says "this video is private."  Is there a way I can watch it?  Sorry if it is something I'm doing that's just stupid.

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. Now it seems the video is not public anymore. Maybe you can access with a google account ;)

That's funny.  I've never even seen a Hobby Lobby, nor could I imagine anything that I might want to buy there.  I'm the kind of person who throws a shirt away when the button falls off because I'm about as un-crafty as can be.  But delicious friend chicken sandwiches with pickles.......?<pain>

I don't craft either. Like, ever. But I don't know, it was just... overwhelming. There were like statues of elephants THAT I NEEDED. /heavy breathing

Wow I gave a pretty thoughtful response and your first sentence when you quote me (presumably to continue the discussion) is "It's pretty clear why you aren't in charge."

I don't understand BSN people. I don't understand why the first response is almost always "rude *******." Why be such a frigging dick? Why not just say, "I understand where you're coming from but I disagree." Is there something going on in your life that's troubling you and forcing you to react online? I just don't even know anymore. And then the lack of reading comprehension! I said I'd like to close the forums, but then IMMEDIATELY, IN THE SAME SENTENCE admitted the negativity would likely simply bleed over into other formats/websites. I then said the forum needed to be more heavily monitored/policed by banning more trolllish members, which is EXACTLY WHAT YOU SAID.

So your post was rude and literally contributed nothing.

Because I don't understand where you are coming from. But you are right, my statement was rude and personal so I apologize. I commented on the intention you expressed and affirmed your own conclusion stating that closing the board was not a solution, it was but a statement about a possible reaction to your initial wish. I was in no particular mood but just felt like being snarky.

Agreed - getting "This video is private" is not cool (how shall others take part in this discussion if the source isn't available to us?)

Chill.

Anyway, the video has some good points. I feel like the majority of Bioware's fanbase need to take a collective chill cyanide pill.

And that is "fixed for you".

That completely sums up my feelings. I think the the #1 reason devs no longer come on these forums is because too many on these forums have lost that objective balance. There was a time when devs actively engaged in these discussions about the pros and cons of fan ideas with much friendly banter back and forth. It's kind of sad to see the state of BSN these days. Oh, well...

Those were good times.

You could actually talk to people and they'd respond politely with why they did things and what they'd change.

First of all, the devs did get a very extreme reaction after the ending of ME3. Death threats and verbal abuse are not on. That said, if they can't take criticism, even when delivered bluntly and with anger, that's their problem and not the fan's. I for one didn't and don't have a big problem with the endings, and I even came to bat for them when this board was at its most toxic. That said, I do admit they made writing a post ME3 game in the Milky Way difficult to do well. It's not impossible though, and I'm very disappointed the easy way out was chosen. MEA is going to have to be a fantastic game for me to consider buying it.

It would pay Bioware to consider what they did to earn the lack of respect they get now, and that showing a lack of respect towards fans in return is only making the situation worse. If things keep going at this rate, Bioware will eventually close down or fall into obscurity.

That's fair enough that you enjoyed the ending and that everyone you've met IRL did as well. And maybe I'm reading too much into this statement, but I don't think that the insinuation that consumers who disliked the ending were a minority is fair or accurate.

I mean, how many thousands of those colored cupcakes were mailed to Bioware? How could the fan reaction to the game have made national news outside of gaming journalism? And supposedly affected EA stock prices? (I'm not sure how accurate that is) And led to Bioware quickly releasing the Extended Cut, not because they thought the ending was bad but to appease fans? (Which luckily did address a lot of the plot holes presented in the vanilla ending)

Yeah it's silly to be butthurt over the endings by now, and I personally wasn't upset by the endings at the time even though I didn't care for them. But don't lump critics of the endings in with hateful trolls who spout bigoted attacks. People can have legitimate reasons for not liking the endings, not just as an excuse to spew hate speech.

I'll never understand what's controversial about "Disagree all you want, just don't be a **** about it."

But, apparently, that stance is somehow more horrid than kicking puppies.

I don't. As you saw from my post, I'm talking about the trolls who are still raging four years later, the people who are still creating threads vowing to  buy the next game in the discount bin; these are the same people who accuse BioWare over and over and over again of "catering to the gays" and "catering to SJW feminists" blah blah BLAH. Those are essentially the people this guy in the video is trying to get to calm down, and they're not gonna calm down. And yeah because they're so damn loud and obnoxious, they are the ones BioWare has a tendency to listen to; they ranted and raved and b!tched and moaned about DA2, and lo and behold, no more all bi love interests and a serious backpedaling on the use of the term "playersexual"; we also got mountains of gorgeous empty maps and a bajillion hours of gameplay because those same nutjobs ranted and raved about the reused tunnels and the short narrative style of DA2.

Now, granted, a reasonable person could object to the term "playersexual" and could make very thoughtful arguments for not going the all-bi route; a reasonable person could admit that the repeated caves were frustrating and that the game was short. But that reasonable person is not the one making obnoxiously offensive threads here on the BSN or leaving really disgusting YouTube comments and tweeting devs really awful things (especially the female ones), and do you really think a majority of reasonable and thoughtful people who were unhappy about the ending of ME3 got together and sent a bunch of f***ing cupcakes to BioWare headquarters?? Who does that??? There have been movies I frigging walked out of because they were so bad and I didn't so much as demand my 8 dollars and fifty cents back.

It's the loudest, the rudest, the most obnoxious who get heard, and yeah, they're a minority, a massive minority, and it's a real shame.

This is just so over the top, surely you can see that? Because they have some extremely obnoxious fans they are going to "fall into obscurity"? This is an immensely successful company that produces truly quality work and has hordes upon hordes of fans. And in what way did BioWare, I presume we are talking about the entire company here, from the writers to the artists to the programmers, do to earn the lack of respect they're getting now. Okay, I assume you agree that death threats are in a different category from "lack of respect" and so we'll not consider that caliber of insanity. But how are they disrespecting their fans? Every video I see of these guys and gals, every tweet, every appearance, is of enthusiastic people who are trying their damnedest to make an amazing game and, yeah, please their most devoted fans. If they fail at that, they do NOT deserve a lack of respect. They can lose the interest of their fans; they can potentially fail at writing and creating a great game. (This being a big if, considering the game DOES NOT COME OUT FOR ANOTHER YEAR; it's truly amazing the awesome powers of prediction some people in this form appear to have...) But this doesn't mean they should be disrespected in any way.

I think people overreact to an incredible degree, and maybe that has to do with this particular set of folks, gamers in particular, I don't really know. I'm sort of narrowing my eyes at geek culture in general because this is where all the intense hatred seems to be coming from these days, whether it's from comic book fans, video game fans, or what have you.

Man, some of these losers (and this is going off entirely away from your post, sorry lol) are the first to accuse BioWare of catering and to accuse others of being "too sensitive" but damn if they aren't the most sensitive whiny set of little entitled b!tches I ever did see lol

Trust is a fragile thing. Bioware was my favourite developer at one time. Not any more. Trust was eroded with ME3 and further downgraded with what they did with dragon age 3 IMO. That is not whining and trolling its simply being reasonable. As to buying the game bargain bucket, they owe me for the two games I bought that were rubbish. Will I ever pre order in the future??  Possibly if they win back the trust IF being the operative word. Fact is I would love BW to get back their crown as my favourite games company, its just hard to see them getting their arrogance sorted and doing things to suit their customers, rather than their own arrogance of we know best.

Remember the so called trolls are usually interested in BW getting themselves sorted and getting their heads together, with what games people want rather than spoon feeding us stuff we are disappointing with. Nobody will like everything about a game, but when many customers complain like ME3 ending they should consider it as their mistake rather than the fans.

Agreed. As I said, I knew I might have been reading too much into it. Thank you for clarification!

At this point I'm looking toward DAI rather than ME3 as the template for MEA. But I'm only going to be taking reviews and public reaction into account when deciding how soon to buy the game.
