With focus increasing gear can you drop bombs every mid-major skirmish?

For context, I'm starting a new play-through.  My party will consist of the following:

Inquisitor - Mage (haven't decided on specialization)

Iron Bull

Varric

Viv

I figure with Viv & I keeping barrier on IB we will be good.

With perks, gear and upgrades that increase focus gain on at least you and one other party member, you can drop it quite often, almost every fight and, certainly every major fight. Twice or even three times in some boss fights.

Also, at lower levels set Bull to DEFEND either you or Vivienne, he's a bit squishy at first, but he does fine defending until about level 15.

Nice.  That sounds good.  I was hoping it would be like that.

So can I combo off my own spells?  Like Pull of Abyss > Winter's Grasp > Dispel?

Certainly. Doesn't matter who does what, all the matters is the status effect and the combo attack.

But I have to ask, why would you want to put so much effort into Firestorm? I personally don't waste an active slot on it. For both roleplaying and versatility (try dropping a Firestorm on a rift), Mark of the Rift is a better focus ability for a Rift Mage.

I just love that spell.  The meteors dropping down, the sound it makes, the enemies getting pummeled, the burning and trying to run for their lives... what's not to like?  Plus I hate using mages, this is the first play-though that I've used a mage, and I'm forcing myself to do it.  So I may as well use a spell I like.  I've used Mark of the Rift on other builds, this is something new.

You can quite often cast it as long as you use items that increase focus gain like the belt and masterworks which also increase focus gain as long as enemies are nearby etc. But there are better belts (elemental pact) and better masterworks (hidden blades, heal on hit, walking bomb, explode on kill) to use. Firestorm truly shines on a rift mage only in trespasser when you have super fast focus gain anyways so you don't need to items and can wear an inferno pact belt while dropping constant bombs. Then it's fun. You can use it every battle. Before unfortunately maybe once every three or four encounters.

And as I said, if you are going to use firestorm instead of the mark of the rift ability you should really use an inferno pact belt.

Anyways as mages go : rift is cc god cc the field + drop the nuke, ke is unkillable due to fade shield just drop fire mines and take names at close combat range, necro self revives and is a bit more about movement and positioning while in combat to maximize damage but is now all about stacking fire mines and walking bomb detonations on top of each other to just kill everything in one hit.

Firestorm is garbage. Only does 150% of weapon damage, and the fireballs hit at random.

It's only useful in Trespasser during the final stage because you keep gaining focus.

Mark of the Rift is vastly superior in all respects. More damage, even AoE, slows enemies, no friendly-fire damage.

But Rift Mage is still the best mage spec.

Firestorm is not that good because it is a focus abiliy. If it were even a 60 second cooldown ability like in mp it would be very good though. Like keep it up all the time thanks to Flashpoint or throw two firestorms simultaneously if you like. Keep all enemies flat on their butts while inflicting OK damage especially with the pact belt on.

An as mage specs go necro does the speed killing nowadays if done right. You can get 20k spirit damage virulent (spreading) walking bombs on top of the initial 20k fire damage of fire mine.

I was always disappointed in firestorm.  Perhaps it is on lower difficulty levels.  The problem is not being able to cast it, but rather it does fire damage.  Too many enemies are fire resistant on nightmare to make value of it.  Mark of the Rift is better almost every time.

Hey, BD! Good to hear from you, been a while. I would appreciate you opinion on the reaver thread, particularly since your name was invoked:
