The light color trilogy and the "so be it" spin-off. Nice!
There will be four new books (one by Mac Walters)

The last one will probably be a prank book that shoots out a spring-loaded boxing glove into the reader's face when opened.
The last chapter will be printed on flash paper that will burst into flame in our hands. For the "feelz"

Well, as long as BioWare makes the game a self contained insular unit, we'll be fine. Also, I'm quite interested in reading anything from the ME universe.

... four?! Sweet baby Space Jesus.
This much can be said: I don't think they would flesh out four tie-in books for a new game they weren't confident in.
I'm still expecting a twist: It's comic books.

They better not do anything like that. I swear, that's got to be the most pretentious thing about tie in novels that include major lore and characters.
You run into a character that you are expected to know from the novels, or you encounter an event that was only mentioned in the books, and when you (rightfully) criticize the main platform for lacking in properly explaining those things you get the whole "this was all covered in the book series".It's like the creators of the setting are insinuating that you aren't a 'true' fan if you haven't read the mountains of tie in material.
I'd wager it's a tactic to generate more money for the franchise. Hell, it certainly works on me when I've played enough of the game and want more material. Especially when I find out that said material provides a backstory to characters that feature in the game.

I also wonder if AI has replaced ARKCON. We haven't seen anything say ARKCON, and the purpose for which we guessed it would be used is now being occupied by "Andromeda Initiative."
Just spitballing here, but if so that's kind of interesting, right? Huge difference between an project labeled "Ark Contingency" (or what have you) and one named "Andromeda Initiative." The former is pretty explicitly a means to escape the Reapers, the latter resonates with Mac's comments that volunteers had many reasons to join (though it was still probably funded in the first place by people who wanted to make an Ark for the Reapers, and the volunteers weren't told that along with the rest of the public).
Like every me game there were probably lots of rewrites.

I have been iffy on the Mass Effect books to date, though I enjoyed seeing David Gaider progress through the DA novels from a cliche machine to a decent writer. It wasn't until I bumped into Greg Bear's Halo trilogy and took a chance, considering how much I enjoy his other work, that I decided to start giving tie-in novels a chance at all. I'd read a grand total of one before that and it made Deception look well-written. That makes me far more likely to take a chance on a tie-in from a respected author, particularly one that turns out to be a geek of my own stripe!

This thing is so funny because it's so true. People who never read the book think it's an exaggeration, but it's really not. LOL

Self-repost form another thread. In case there's a chance that BW 'are listening':
---------
As much as I love to hear about new ME content, I really-really hate it when they put lore, events and characters crucial for the game plot outside the game.
ME1-->ME2? The transition was 100% seamless. Prequel could add some flavour, but nothing important. We hear all that from Anderson, and the details are prety much irrelevant, Anderson is fleshed out as a character via the in-game content.
ME2-->ME3? Not so much, because to avod the multiple 'wtfs' one had to play 2 DLCs (LotSB for Liara, Arrival for the trial and all the batarian hatered) read a comic (to know why da hell that Vega-guy is acting like he's Shep's best buddy), read two novels (Kai Leng+Anderson+Sanders). And even that did not guarantee the full 'seamlessness', because moments like Anderson-not-in-the-Council-anymore had never been explained.
The worst example is DAI, because I have no idea what that plot feels like without Legacy DLC, Asunder and Masked Epmire. Cole was handled in a decent way, but Rhys, Fiona, Celene, Gaspard or Briala? It just won't make much sense(if any at all). The in-game content was lacking (to say the least).
Oh, and DAO->> DA2 did not require any explainations, and neither are DAO prequels crucial for the in-game plot.
I really-really hope that they are not going to follow the DAI\ME3 patterns here.
Note, that I'm not speaking about relying on the previous games' content here. It's ok to understand more in the 4th game because one had played 1,2 &3. People who hop into the TV series beginning with the season 4, 13th episode should have guessed that they, you know, might have missed something. ![]()
In-game lore and events, however should only rely on the game itself. Same as understanding a movie should not be followed by an hour of explainations from the director.
Also note, that I don't say anything about the book itself. Yet. For all we know it might be totally irrelevant for the MEA (e.g. Star Wars:Aftermath, which is a stand-alone fiction which has nothing to do with the movies) But we've already seen best buddy Vega in ME3, and we've already had shadow placeholders instead of Gaspard Briala in DAI.

Here's hoping that it'll bring us golden tidbits about the setting like Deception did with its masterful plot and Turians pulling rickshaws.

I find it ironic his name is WIlliam C. Dietz when there's so much emphasis on cereal and people eating food in his novels.

Tiny update: the release dates are the same as in this brochure from 2015, so probably old and might be not accurate now. Also, the first novel original had the Pathfinder Initiative as title. So, did they change Pathfinder Initiative to Andromeda Initiative in game too?

Nice detective work.
For me this finally lends credence to the theory that the "Ai" on our protagonist's armor could mean "Andromeda Initiative". It was never implausible, but there weren't any lines of evidence to support it. Now, we at least have a little something extra beyond simple common sense.
I hope the release dates aren't altered to account for the game's delayed release. BioWare's tight-lipped handling of the game could be partly assuaged by a quality novel.

I started out being a Weekes fan, but his stuff turned kind of "meh" with time. It seems like he falls in love with his own characters, at times, which can be bad for the story.

I played DAI before any of the Mass Effect games so I kind of saw his work in reverse. I don't love all of his characters but overall I'm really pleased he's the one who took over as lead writer.

The more I hear news on ME:A the less interested I am in it. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. With all the talk about Mako riding and exploring in the game and now crucial story and lore being told in the books. It just seems like the game itself is going to be a souless exploration game I need the books to figure out.
