As far as I know, it was mandatory in Mass Effect 3 as well.

Can't say really, I've never done a sexless romance, but I know in ME1 you could.

I'm not quite sure I get what you are saying. Can you give an example scenario please?

Hm I'd have to think about it more.

No, for quite a few romances you were given an ultimatum: have sex or the relationship ends.

For others there was an option to skip the sex scene but the game still expressed that the relationship involved sex.

So far there is only one romance where a sex scene or even mention of sex does not occur: Kelly Chambers. The writer wrote her romance with similar intentions as the writers of Josephine and Solas wrote theirs: leave it ambiguous so the player can determine the kind of relationship.

For what I remember Jack didn't had any sex in her romance either. (Not the "quicky" that made her hate you.)

Thank God (TIM?) Kelly the woman who doesn't mind quicky-wickies was around.

They should be natural about it, like not showering in underwear. I like how it all was handled in DAI although full-plate sex a la Excalibur has its merits as well at times. :D

I'm at a loss to explain why they opted to do a shower scene at all, especially when there was no shower in Shepard's cabin at all prior to that scene.

IMO, underwear in ME3 (except for the shower scene) was a big improvement over the fully dressed "orgasm" we apparent gave Jack in ME2.  Blankets over the participants' lower bodies would have seemed more natural than the views of fully dressed people lying on the bed that we also got in ME2.  Of the 3 games, I thought ME1 did the best job.

Overall, I don't care if they show some nudity, but I don't want gratuitous genitalia shown.  I'm old enough that I can certainly fill in the blanks on my own, so the game doesn't have to risk getting an AO rating on my account.  What I want out of a romance is more natural expressions of affection throughout (i.e. the option to just kiss, hug or even hold hands every now and then would go a long ways)... unlike the lack of affection most of the characters showed towards Shepard prior to the actual sex scene despite being "locked in" to a romance well before that point in the game.  Most of the romances in the ME Trilogy just felt forced and "stiff."  Thankfully, Bioware has said that ME:A's romances will seem more natural and organic... hopefully, they'll deliver on this.

Someone forgot to change the station to Barry White after walking in.  ^_^

There was, it's just that there was no reason to look at it.

Hm well Hanako my sense is you would probably object to like... full frontal no matter how it's done right?

I think with the right context  that kind of thing could be pretty awesome (and highlight hypocrisy in rating standards since it occurs in Hollywood)

But no matter how it's done I'm sensing a sort of squeamishness around it all generally...

I have no need to see genitalia but I would not mind any of the approaches depending on the character and what the writer wants to do with them regardless of if it is naked, underwear, partial clothing or just fade to black. As long as the romance arc is good and the scene fits with the character in question.

It's not up to Bioware, most AAA games aim mainly at consoles, and console doesn't allow you to show vagina. In certain cases, you could show penis in nonsexual situation. In romance scenes, the scene may be more sexual in nature, so Sony and Microsoft doesn't want them for their console. Fallout 4 mods allow you to mod in penis and vagina in the game, but console mod banned breasts from even showing on the console. Most of the eroge visual novels need to be changed to remove the nude scenes.

It's like every media but they're favored one (Hollywood) bleh.

But that's just me, most people here seem all right with that anyway... and some a bit opposed to the whole situation altogether.

Well, I guess you'll be disappointed by ME:A then because it's going to have nudity.

What sort?

Yeah, I guess on second look the shower head is there, hanging out in the open on the wall.  The toilet then should be shown in the shower scene.  Still think they had better options than a shower scene.  It's like in ME2, Miranda opting to "not settle" for the hard floor of the engineering area.  Miranda is the type of girl I would envision setting up a "perfect" wine and dine scene in her cabin... wearing that red dress number they gave her in the Citadel DLC... Just odd clunky choices overall.

I know its already been said but I'll add my voice to the 'what the hell was the underwear show scene about' I mean either do sex in a shower or not...

And again I'll add my agreement that the Liara 'romance' scene in ME3 was great, suggestive and intimate without being overtly 'pornish' (yeah not a word is it... ) and also the laying in bed in your bra before and after!!! I would have been happy with a vest or a Tshirt, much more realistic

I guess I'd prefer intimacy with a hint of sex and leave the rest to the imagination/head cannon...

I definitely would go for more overt signs of affection between PC and LI - such as if the LI doesn't go on a mission, they could check in with you and express some concern, or we could have some acknowledgement from other party members that you are an item, or we could exchange a casual kiss here and there.  Actually, as annoying as I found Kaidan sometimes, his goodbye scene in ME3 right before the final mission was fantastic.   It's okay to act like you like someone, unless you are in elementary school.

Anyway, more on topic with the thread...As a female gamer I get annoyed with the fact that there are always breasts on display in these things but the men are hardly ever even shown even without a SHIRT on.  The Blackwall romance in DAI is a poster child for this - he leaves you nude in his quarters and you are fully exposed but he is always shown wearing what looks like a quilt on his entire body - you never even see his arms, for crying out loud. The man is a tank in battle so let's see the guns, at least!

I am hoping this is starting to become less gender-biased though - Cullen, Dorian, Kaidan in ME3 (although he wasn't drawn very realistically in my book - I liked him better in ME1), that level is really fine.  No need for the full Monty, just have common sense.  We're adults and generally don't shower (for example) with our clothes on - unless we are drunk.  :-)

Look, we're dealing with a custom character here. The only way this would work is if they introduced genital and pubic hair sliders.

And as frelling amusing as that sounds, that ain't happening.

Again, that's what mods can do for us.

What about a Decoy Romance option, who you can flirt with several times... but dies horribly at the end of Act 1?

It's not a Friendzone.

But if that is what is required to have a romance like that, your proposal is acceptable.

Haha! Some pretty good jokes here...

Issues with junk display remain a line that even mature games are unlikely to cross (for now).

DAI did play the comedy card, but in terms of what was shown got it about right.

That scene was pretty funny...

Cass was the best.

Well most of the time you see V and P in erotic art it feels kinda awkward from my perspective. Or like if you take most classical European art it comes off as really lurid and stuff. Some kind of addiction to making it black and white... for one... because meaning.

Pornography obviously as well.

I'd certainly rather they stuck to that if they feel that's appropriate than over-reaching.. as most fans here seem to feel around your bits I see that as a burgeoning consensus...

Edit: LOL sorry I just realized bits there had a double meaning sorry sorry! I meant bits as in something like your idea there.
