I've played just about every major RPG made in the last 15 years and Sera is the first character that has annoyed me so much that I've considered getting rid of her. I mean every time she opens her mouth I just want to punch her teeth out.

I'm pretty early into the game, so without any spoilers can someone tell me if I'll miss out on any interesting content if I just give her the boot right now? Is she involved in any story stuff later on? Will I be missing out on anything worthwhile without her? Does she at any point get interesting, or is it just going more idiotic "jokes" that seem like they were written for 5 year olds?

Again no specific spoilers please.

She can open the doors in the Haven chantry basement if your main char is not a rogue. I'd consider asking her to unlock them before you give her the boot, as some codex entries and sometimes pretty good loot can be found behind those doors. Also, do her war table quests for the bee grenade, because it is a fun and useful piece of equipment and you only have access to this mission if she's with you. If Sera is with you, there will be some crates littered around the areas called Red Jenny Stashes that contain some gear and boost her approval. Other than that, she's not essential in any way.

I get it, I felt exactly the same way when I first played.  I facepalmed so hard when I met her, the stupid jokes and accent and hair....

Then I re-started the game with a new Inquisitor who was more fun and outgoing, had a sarcastic personality and I decided that she would like Sera.  I roleplayed like a champ pretending that my IQ thought she was awesome and boom, whaddya know?  All of a sudden I get it.  I understand why ppl love her.   She's funny and a refreshing change to almost everyone else in the game.

My advice would be to give her a chance with at least one of your Inquisitors (you could save her for next time), recruit her, be friends with her, and you may see that Sera is in fact a pretty great character.  You just need the right type of IQ, and my stuck up human didn't gel with her at all.  It was my dwarf rogue who was fond of her.

Oh, and as for her influence, she adds some really funny dialogue here and there.  Truly funny, not just childish, and if you take her to the Winter Palace she cuts through all the crap the nobles are dishing out.  She lightens the mood really well, freaks out if you take her to the fade, and provides lots of extra flavour to the game.

But nothing massively significant...that I know of.  Others will be able to expand on that.

Hands over to Nightscrawl and Vertigomez...

Sera is actually my favorite companion.

I'm not all super srs gamer dude all the time who demands companions or NPC's who are well mannered, well endowed and whatever else.  I like that Sera has all these flaws because it makes her seem more like a real person.

She's one of my favorites but Sera is not for everyone. I would encourage you to try her entire arc through at least once so you can experience it all, but your opinion might not change. She's complicated and can be frustrating, especially if you're playing as an elf, but she can also be a lot of fun and the more you get to know her, the more you'll understand why she is the way she is.

On a practical level, you'll want to at least keep her long enough to get Jar of Bees. You get that through her war table missions. You'll only have to do that once, as on subsequent PTs you can sync it with the Golden Nug. Other than that, if you're not a rogue or are one and are planning to do Artificier or Assasin, you'll miss out on getting to play with the Tempest specialization.

All you miss is one possible agent and, one chance to annoy your advisors. Nothing major lost for not having Sera. While I do think she is well done in all aspects for the character she is meant to be, I dislike her and rarely recruit her myself. I will say though, that it is worth playing a female Qunari and romancing her just once, there are some good laughs in there - provided you can take her annoying stupid sounding remarks with a grain of salt and, more or less ignore them.

Sera is one of my favorites, but if she's not your cup of tea you can let her go. You will miss out on her personal quest, and maybe jar of bees and other war table operations associated with her.

Welp, can't convince you to like anyone you just don't like. I will say that on my very first DAI attempt, I was playing a Dalish rogue and romancing Solas and my only opinion of Sera was that she seemed like a gigantic twatwaffle. But then I started listening to her banter... and befriending her, and watching her romance on YouTube and seeing how heartfelt and sweet it was... and I realized how earnest and real she is. Sera's just an ordinary person who gets involved in extraordinary circumstances. She's the only one (besides potentially the Inquisitor) who immediately forgives, um... someone who made terrible choices in the past. She gets scared and insecure and fed-up, but she tries to bring people back to the real world, where farmers and launderers and cooks are suffering and scared and don't know what the crap is going on. They're her priority.

BUT none of that helps if you just want her gone, so no, she's not necessary. She's just humanizing.

Sera kind-hearted. Sera rebellious. Funny. Devoted. These properties are all I appreciate. But I can't really like Sera. I just try to tolerate her. I never will kick her from the Inquisition (the temptation is great!), because as I said she are good person, and can be useful... But her manners! This voice! She simply annoy me. So much.

I almost didn't even recruit her. But she is useful, and her Tempest specialization is very effective in battles. You should keep her around for tough fights. She doesn't contribute much to the story, but I think she is a good person to have around. It depends on your tastes as far as characters go. If you don't like her, you can always ignore her, or even dismiss her later at any time.

Alright so the sense that I get from the responses is that there's more to her than just fart noises and adolescent jokes? I guess I'll give her a shot then and see how it turns out. Talk about a bad first impression though. :P

Thanks for the responses everyone!

You'll be missing out story context with her before she is met again in DA4 or DA5.

The thing with Sera is that she may do pranks, fart noises and adolescent jokes.  But you have to pay attention to who those are directed at and who they arent.  And remember that this game isnt set in Earth-2016 its Thedas.  You have to look at how nobility treats its commoners in Thedas...not how nobility treats its commoners in the real world.  She does all the stuff that she does to people that deserve it.  And if you pay attention to the story bits it does sound like the nobs deserve what Sera/The Friends of Red Jenny brings down on them.

Also "The Friends of Red Jenny" kinda sounds like a cool nickname for a group :P

Try having Vivienne and Sera in a group.

Some of the banter is quite funny. (especially the Smell one, and her not-giggling responses)

I do agree with her on one thing, tho.  Vivienne is EVIL!

I tend to view companions as skill sets that can be more or less useful rather than as personalities that I like or dislike. If your Inquisitor is not an archer, Sera can be very useful. Varric doesn't come into his own until he gets his specialization and the AI doesn't manage Cole's Assassin skills very well.

I don't sympathize with Sera either, but in my understanding, when I play an RPG, it's fundamental to understand each character's motives, regardless of how I feel about them. They each have a specific background which has shaped who they are. Therefore, my PC is not there to force their values and culture onto someone else. They're there to learn how to coexist with people from different origins while striving to achieve a goal or fulfill a mission. Meanwhile, my PC learns more about other ways of life, about different philosophies and the experience will enrich them somehow.

The only way you'll like Sera is if your Inquisitor is a man/woman of the lower class. A downtrodden peasant whose mother was a maid or whose father was a helpless farmer or stonemason and who has been humiliated by the aristocracy.

You need to understand why she joins the Red Jenny. She doesn't do it for political reasons, for noble reasons, like Cullen and Dorian do toward the Inquisition. She does it to get back at abusive nobles, for revenge. It's personal.

If your Inquisitor feels the same way, if they're someone who felt like a pariah all their life, if they're illiterate, if they aren't close to their family and frequent taverns so as not to feel lonely and if they live for today, with no thought for what tomorrow will bring, then they'll get along with Sera just fine. Otherwise, it's best to just not recruit her, 'cause she's a real handful.

ModernAcademic, I dont even think its necessary to have the same background as Sera to enjoy her company.  As a player you just need to have thicker skin or dont get so offended by the way she talks or the words she uses.  Like Viv and Solas dont get along with Sera...Viv because she's a nob out for herself it seems and Solas because he's too "elfy".  But then you have Bull, Varric, sometimes Cassandra, Blackwall hell even Dorian get along with her.  I say get along with her and not simply tolerate her because I see they have cutscenes where they hang out in the tavern drinking and whatnot.  BW and IB even have some dialogue that is along the same level as some of Seras where they ask Solas about the fade ladies.  Dorian casts aside his noble roots and riches and how do you think Sera is going to like that? there is even an entry in Sera's journal that kinda lets you know how her friendship with Dorian is.

And Cole? well given his origin and Sera's fears its understandable why she is totally mean to him.

Sera is what she is.. She's not for everybody but, she does have a way of growing on you. I prefer Sera 100 times over the "Its spa day Darling" Vivienne. Sera goes on 90% of my quest.

My first character ever in DAI was a DW rogue and i knew that i wanted Sera as a comp (since it was youtube videos that let me know of her) but i just didnt know how to get her.  I didnt get her until level 10 on that first character.  But on every character after that like my mage and war i'll go get her as soon as i get 4 power so that i can travel to Val Royeaux.  I'll actually arrive at Hinterlands, close a rift and open up 2 camps and then go right to get her.  That way i can do the quests in Hinterlands that are "commoner" oriented and get approval from her.

Sera pretty much goes on 100% of my quests after i get her lol.

I find it interesting that she is the only companion that you can outright tell to get lost. Oddly enough she doesn't bother me nearly as much as Vivienne or Bull -- I think I'd be nice to be able to tell everyone (maybe except for Cass & Varric) to GTFO ala DA:O.
