10K,Just go talk to the Cajuns, folks from the South and the New England States.  I still can't get over what sounded like "card" for cod in Boston or light bub for light bulb in the South.

Maybe that's why I don't have any problems understanding Sera.

Sera shares her voice actress's Derbyshire accent.

Bet you if Sera had the same look as her VO actress people would be less likely to dismiss her the first chance they get :P

I just can't understand any of the hate for Sera, I think she's brilliant - she's a properly realised "alive" character. She and Cassandra are absolutely my two favorite NPCs practically ever   - (and given the presence of Varric and Leliana, that's saying something).

So she looks a bit quirky and she's not mannered and she pretty much says the first thing that comes into her head, but these are all things that make the character so well - she's off the wall and a proper wildcard and the game is all the better for her.

So there. :P :D

Actually in a wierd way she reminds me a tiny bit of Shale in DA:O, just in some aspects of her attitude and stuff.

Anyway, leave her alone she's Awesome!!

I like Sera as a concept. Okay she's the voice of the working classes, the downtrodden, an antithesis to the 'heroic noble' trope. I get it. I also love that she speaks in a street-slang way of talking. On paper she sounds like a worthy character.

But in execution it irritates me no end that I don't actually have a clue what she's saying half the time. And the half I do understand is bum jokes and raspberries at the nobles around her. It all makes her seem incredibly immature and frankly rather dim.

I want to like her. But I just don't.

But you have to look beyond that, because she's sharp and she knows what she's doing. She dresses everything up in bum jokes and general "off-kilter-ness", but there's more to it than that.

So what if she's not as po-faced and worthy as, say, Blackwall...? She provides a foil to the earnest nature of some of the other NPCs and a counterpoint to Varric's rather different Rogue character, and if only for that alone she's important.

More so though, she's a character very much more than the sum of her parts, she strikes me as some kind of weird genius - very astute and observant and good at reading a situation, but with neither the time, nature, or inclination to dress up anything in flowery language, or even serious language, but she gets results.

Seriously, spend some time with her, and you'll see - there's way more depth to her than it at first appears that there is and she is genuinely likeable, if a little spiky...!

I have no trouble understanding what Sera says.  That's probably cause i had to take ESL when i was 11-12 years old.  Before that Dad and me spoke English, siblings and mom spoke a mix of English and something else, school spoke something else, i didnt know wtf they said in school so by the time i was 11 i was in an American school and had to take ESL.  So i guess i know the value of shutting up, listening, comprehending, looking at body language and not completely dismissing someone just because the words they say dont make any sense to me.  It might have also helped that when i was growing up i watched quite a bit of Absolutely Fabulous on TV (lol that Bubbles is a crazy woman).

On the subject of Sera being surprisingly savvy, I find that this is best demonstrated in some of her banter with Vivienne. She deliberately acts as uncouth as possible to highlight how ridiculous she thinks Vivi's posturing is (and by extension how most nobles behave). Everything from the way they treat their servants to how seriously they take themselves and how important and essential they think they are to the world around them. That's all bullcrap and she knows it. She calls the Inquisitor a nickname because she's well aware that titles are something people wear to make themselves feel like they've got something on the people who don't have titles.

Banter with Viv starts at 05:05:00.

Spoiler

Her banter with Solas is similarly insightful, especially on the nature and purpose of rebellion.

And that's the thing about Sera - she has no formal education, she's "book dumb" and streetwise, and she's so used to being called stupid that she's internalized that and uses it as a way to diminish herself (calls herself stupid during In Hushed Whispers because she's being poisoned to death by red lyrium and can't remember a poem, calls herself stupid for having feelings about the cookie story and her childhood...). It's sad, because she's her own kind of brilliant but she can't even recognize it because she's so accustomed to everyone dismissing her and calling her stupid.

More party banter stuff in the links below!!!

It doesnt has as much as the one above but it has the cutscenes for some of the stuff which has facial expressions and whatnot.  I actually watched part 3 when i was looking for Fallout 4 funny videos and i sat through the whole video and afterwards i got the game.  My favorite was Sera's funny stuff of course, and my favorite one out of all of hers was the "here is what i learned in the alleys" which is on part 3 at 2:40.

I was umm-ing and ahh-ing about doing that on my next run, actually. Sera was benched in my first game and left in my second. I'll probably do it just to see what I'm missing with her. But my expectations are low.

I don't know if you like the romances but hers is the best in the game and would allow you to see a side of her personality that you wouldn't see otherwise.

Not even sure what it is you are expecting...but maybe try to lower your standards a bit. Its a video game character you arent looking for your irl soulmate.  Its ok to laugh at her fart jokes, crude behavior or her potty mouth...we wont judge you its fine.

IMO her party banter is the best when you take along other companions that complement her.  If you bring along Sera and Vivienne for example they will argue a lot.  I you bring Cole along she definately wont like him (look up her list of fears if you want to know why).  I think Blackwall, Iron Bull, Dorian and Varric go along best with her.  None of their dialogue puts her down and they arent too argumentative.  BW, IB and Dorian will actually play along with her shenanigans in party banter too.

Try having Vivienne and Sera in a group.

Some of the banter is quite funny.

I used Sera, Vivienne, and Cole. It was pretty good.

Like being on a field trip outing with patients from the local psyche ward.

Well Viv and Cole doesn't really highlight Seras dialogue it highlights Vivs behavior and Coles weirdness.  Cole and Sera for example is mostly Cole saying something weird and then Sera telling him to be quiet in just a few words.  At least with Cole and IB or BW they will talk back to Cole and the chit chat back and forth will be funny all around...not just one sided.  And Vivienne? well she argues with every other companion except Cassandra and IB i think. And its just my preference but i dont find back and forth arguing to be funny., doesnt matter between who and who.

I don't necessarily think arguing is funny, but I think it can provide you with a lot of insight into the characters - their motivations and fears. So I really enjoy having Viv and Sera (or Morrigan and Alistair, or Anders and Sebastian...) in the same party because you understand them in a way that you just can't if you only see their friendly side (that is, you have high approval). For that matter I think it's a great idea to watch their low approval/angry/negative reactions on YouTube even if you're too squeamish to play them out in-game, because again... insight. Lots and lots of insight.

Just for having a great time, though, I'd absolutely suggest Sera/Dorian/Bull with frequent guest appearances by Blackwall for the Ultimate PARTY Party™.

Same here, though I can't do it. I must recruit all! She is sometimes genuinely funny (though her introduction is cringiest **** in the game) and very very occasionally insightful despite her flaws. She is kinda like Anomen in BG for me, I think both of them are well written...they are just well written versions of the sort of people I dislike.

Now that I think about it, despite the fact that I don't really like Sera her interaction with my inquisitor ended up being pretty interesting and adding a surprising amount to story (to me anyway). On my fist playthrough i played at Dalish elf inquisitor and despite the fact that her and Sera got into at least 2 major fights they somehow still ended up on friendly terms. Her friendship scenes ended up being surprising heartwarming. With that character I RPed that they naturally had a wicked sense of humor and were a bit playful  but because she is in an environment she is not use to, because of the weight and seriousness of her responsibilities and because she  is very very aware of eyes being on her and that actions and words have consequences beyond herself and could affect her people  she ends up being very stressed about that and feels she has to carefully measure every word and action. Sera manages to both ****** her off enough that she forgets to do that and draw her into having some silly distracting fun like she would have with her siblings if the world wasn't ending. It just ended up working really well. Sera's "remind people that the big hats are still people" thing is one of the things she is surprising insightful about (IMO at least).
