Saber goes well with anything. Valkyrie is pretty nice too.

Assuming that you only plan on using ARs (thus not equipping any other weapon type) and going for fast power cooldowns, I'd recommend something along the lines of the lighter guns. Avenger, Lancer and Vindicator are the lightest; and the Mattock and Phaeston are not far behind. With the appropriate modifications any of these guns can perform very well under any circumstance.

Post Patch Weapon Ranking by Athenau.

 

Probably the best (and only) single-player weapons ranking 'guide'. It is a personal list, but you cannot really disagree with his choices. It pretty much applies to all classes.

 

Anyway, from that thread, here are what he considers are the best (S-Tier) assault rifle choices:

• Cerberus Harrier (Weapons DLC)
• N7 Typhoon (Weapons DLC)
• M-7 Lancer (Citadel DLC)
• Adas (Weapons DLC)

Unsurprising, they are all DLC weapons because almost all DLC weapons are insanely good, unlike the main game weapons which are mostly crap with a few standout good ones.

 

Here are the assault rifles Athenau considers to be A-Tier:

• M-99 Saber
• N7 Valkyrie (Omega DLC)
• M-96 Mattock

 

The Vindicator might be the only other assault rifle I would consider using. The rest are garbage.

 

(I prefer shotguns myself)

The Saber can be found when doing the Sanctuary mission in the last room with two brutes and banshee. There is a red circle you can activate that will then ask you if you want to manually override something or other. Choose yes, then go to the opposite end of the hall and activate another red circle. A glass case will rise up giving you access to the Saber.

 

My favorite AR by far is the Lancer.

Favorite pistol is the Eagle. (collectors edition weapon that you can also unlock on PC with some editing)

Favorite SMG is the Hurricane (collectors edition weapon)

Favorite sniper rilfe is the Raptor.

Favorite shotgun is the Pirahna. (DLC)

If on PC one of the best ways to improve SP is to get something like Expanded Galaxy Mod which moves some of the late game pickups into stores (well it does a whole lot more than that to improve it, but that is one of the benefits).

 

At any rate, if you think the Lancer is bad, then that may be a problem since it is one of the better AR's in SP, at least in terms of DPS.  Needs to be leveled up to gain magazine capacity though (as with all "infinite" ammo guns).  Magazine mod is also helpful.

 

By and large I don't care for a lot of the AR's in this game since balance is all over the place, and hardly any handle like you would expect an archetype of the class to handle.  But besides Lancer or Harrier I would go Saber, Valkyrie or Mattock.  Vindicator is also an option, although don't expect it to burn through bosses.
