Maybe it hasn't actually been in existence that long?

I'm still new to DAI, but as I understand it, red lyrium is lyrium that has been tainted by darkspawn.

Is it possible that the idol was originally made of regular lyrium, and then became tainted more recently?

It's technically lyrium that has been tainted by the Blight. I only make this distinction because if darkspawn could taint lyrium, most of the pure lyrium we've seen in the Deep Roads should have been red. And I think revealing this raises further issues about the nature of lyrium (titan blood?) and the Blight.

There seems to be a slight difference in how DA2 and DAI presents the red lyrium idol. DA2 presents it as the only source of red lyrium that Varric and Hawke found, and it looked to be a variant form of lyrium intentionally crafted into its idol shape. Its corrupting powers were more mental than physical, since Bartrand had it for years and didn't become Blighted, and it was only after Meredith drew upon too much of the idol's powers at once did she turn into a statue.

DAI makes it seem like there were multiple sources of red lyrium in the thaig (we do see columns of red lyrium rather than normal lyrium there) and any exposure to red lyrium could potentially lead to corruption. The dwarf researcher in the captured Emprise keep talks about how even minute pieces of red lyrium in the earth can touch vermin and taint them, making cleansing the effects almost impossible.

I'm assuming DA4 will change its properties again to not be quite so virulent, as Southern Thedas would otherwise realistically be doomed no matter what.

Or maybe one of your earliest missions in DA4 will be to destroy the red lyrium at its source, thus rendering all remaining red lyrium "sterile", for lack of a better term. It would have to be pretty damn quick- like you said, it's so virulent right now that it pops up on literally every main map in the game, which does not bode well for anyone.

You misunderstood. The Tranquil spoke of how difficult it will be to eradicate all the red lyrium in Emprise du Lion.

Red lyrium feeds on life in order to grow. Even deep in the ground, it can feed on worms and roots in order to expand. Thus, the red lyrium will be difficult to get rid of.

Red lyrium does cause mutation, but only in those who ingest it. Being near it just screws with your mind, which is why Bartrand and Meredith both went insane.

Drinking the Warden kool-aid aside, they've never been too clear on just exactly how the taint is transferred. Ser Wesley (along with a bunch of characters at Ostagar, etc.) get blight sickness from some sort of exposure to darkspawn, while others do not. Plus, the very presence of the blight taints large areas.

I suspect this mystery (exactly how the corruption happens) will continue. It's a tool the writers have in their arsenal that may be less effective in some circumstances if they ever really explain it.

There sure is an awful lot of red lyrium around and about the world in DAI. I'm never quite sure how to read some of the details about level design, since I think the artists are sometimes more interested in rule of cool / aesthetics than accurate representation.

Plus, there's the whole gameplay thing of busting up some chunk of red lyrium somehow clears it. Uh-huh. *nods*

It will be interesting to see where things go from here.

Well, it's not mentioned at all in Trespasser, even though you closing the remaining rifts across Thedas is (another lose plot thread to be tied up). And that's 2 whole years later. So... I guess it's not an issue anymore, somehow, for some reason?
