The AW is a very powerful class, and one of the best for new players like yourself, as it is not very gear and stat dependent.
Obviously you won't have tons of gear, but some things to keep an eye out for:
- highest DPS staff you can find. That said, sometimes a lower DPS with better stats and enhancements can be better.
- for a belt, you're looking for Belt of Health, or Belt of Ranged Defense. Aside from those, anything can work - Fire Resistance can be nice against Wraiths and the Fire Dragon.
- for Rings, you're looking for Life Drain (Heal on Kill), Attack, or Ability Rings like Chain Lightning and Barrier (I think this works, not sure). Crit Chance is a good ring as well, but on the AW, not as good as the ones above.
-the two items you really want to watch for are a staff called Heart of Pride, and a Belt called Storm Pact Belt. You probably won't get these right away though.
For Abilities, the main thing you need is the first passive in the left tree. It's the one that gives you Barrier based on how much damage you do. After that, you'll want a few more passives from the left tree such as Gaurdian Spirit, and a couple others related to strengthening your Barrier (forget their names, sorry. There's a yellow eyeball looking thing on the left side, it's a good one. There's a green one in the middle at the bottom, it's worthwhile to get as well).
From the right tree, upgrading Chain Lightning is useful. Hitting multiple enemies with CL is usually enough to fully charge your Barrier (which is why the CL ring is quite useful). Personally, I go for upgraded Frost Step as well - useful for mobility, evading, and the upgrade causes damage, which in turn charges your Barrier. It also costs 0 Mana....who can say no to a spell that costs 0 Mana.
Stonefist is the last active ability I take, including the upgrade. The upgrade causes Weaken, which when combined with all the Lightning Damage you can do, is very effective at putting enemies to Sleep. It also gives you an alternate type of Attack when you come across enemies immune to Electricity.
Also make sure you get the passive from the right tree which reduces your cooldowns by Auto Attacking (it's purple with a white circle). It can be useful to pick up some of the passives associated with Weaken - the best one being the one which restores Mana. These are somewhat personal preference though.
Lastly, I use Spirit Blade, but I don't upgrade it. The upgrade is ok, but I like being able to take multiple swings with it, and I'd rather spend the point elsewhere.
Basic combat goes like this. Run into Attack range, cast Chain Lightning, Auto Attack 2 or 3 times, Stonefist, Auto Attack, CL, AA, SF, AA, CL etc. Use Frost Step to reposition, get out of sticky situations, avoid Sarabaas Attacks, recharge a portion of your barrier in a pinch, etc. Use Spirit Blade to smack anything that gets too close to you.
For electricity immune enemies like RT Arcane Horrors, Stonefist them, Frost Step through them, then finish them off with Spirit Blade.
Watch out for Archers, they will tear you apart at the start.
Also remember that your best defense is a strong Offense, but try to avoid going Rambo mode until you can actually take on all comers.

The upgrade is definitely worthwhile. One Chain Lightning+ puts it back to 60%, so 4 basic attacks or one good Fade Step and it's fully charged again. Without it, only the first two swings do any real damage anyway, and then it takes twice as long to recharge. Better to be mobile than animation-locked.
Fade Cloak is also worth mentioning. Brief invulnerability, instant knockdown recovery and the damage/barrier generation from the upgrade add a lot to survivability when you don't have much in the way of gear/promotions.

Fair point about SB. I think that one comes down to individual preference and play style.
Personally, I don't find myself using Spirit Blade that often....the least of the 4 active abilities I take. I have HoP and Storm Pact Belt, so not much makes it within Melee range of me, and I usually FS to create space as opposed to engaging in CQC. Because I don't use SB that often, I can't justify putting an extra point into it. I would rather spend that point on a passive, or making sure the other 3 abilities have their upgrades. I've actually been thinking of replacing SB with either Dispel or Mindblast to trigger Nightmare Combos started by HoP and Stonefist. Only reason I run with SB is because it's free, and I'm a fiend for passives lol.
For a new player though, SB is a good reliable ability (and its free!). Like you said, there are definitely benifits to the upgrade, and it's worth trying out on a couple playthroughs. Same thing goes for Fade Cloak....I'd sort of forgot about that, but for survivability and a more solo oriented build, FC is very handy.

It's one of the best, but I wouldn't say the best. The Sarabaas and AW are probably the two most newb friendly in terms of having good survivability and can contribute to the group effort. So is the Saarebas the best mage?
With beginner gear and no promotions, the AW will probably have better Offense than an offensive build on a Sarabaas. You can build the Sarabaas to be an awesome team support class though, which doesn't require gear or stats.
The thing with going support on the Sara though, is if you play like a 100% barrier bot and sit by the entrance door, just spamming barrier, things get very boring very fast (yes I've seen people play like this...I just shake my head). You can definitely still fill the support roll and be aggressive on the front lines, but to get the most out of that style, I think you need some understanding of how combat flows and evolves - a lot of being an aggressive support Sarabaas is about anticipating what is going to happen, and being in the right spot ahead of time....difficult to do if you are new to DAMP. That's why I would lean towards the AW for a new player.
Both classes are very good though, and it's definitely worth while to unlock the Sarabaas If you haven't already.

Press Triangle, select Saarebas, press X. Best AW build.
I can't find this "Triangle Thing" on my keybord ....
So is the Saarebas the best mage?
Avvar is definitely the best mage in the game.
Ok seriously, The two agents added last to the games (Silent Sister and Saarebas) are overpowered compared the other agents and balance was never really an issue in a Co-Op game without PvP. But still all agents are different and I find them all fun to play.

Through your first play throughs with the AW, you will see him shine in zapping everything in sight and enjoy darting around on a stream of ice with fade step. Fade Cloak is a favorite for sure especially when fighting the Demon Commander and Terrors(what the Demon Commander looks like) as it offers you freedom from grabbing your face and not being able to act for 2-3 seconds, and then in turn whomps out some great damage when you are adjacent or overlapping the enemy's standing ground. So your typical and most popular build will be chain lightning, spirit blade, fade cloak, frost step. Guardian Spirit saves your butt once every 60 seconds and is a must when pushing your limits especially at a higher difficulty, which for now will be threatening.
The really cool thing about this toon is that once you get a higher damage staff, lets say 78+, or lets just say Heart of Pride for example, you can make your first transition probably into perilous and survive off your barrier once upgraded with Strength of Spirits Passive. With that + Gathering Storm + Combat Clarity + Rejuvenating Barrier, you pretty much have infinite mana, low cooldowns, and you can sustain your barrier. Note that the strength of anyone's barrier is based off of base weapon damage, and there is a post on the forum that breaks down barrier generation and guard generation, which otherwise is almost impossible to figure out on your own.
Anyways, welcome to the game, which console do you play or are you on PC? If on PS4 I'd be more than glad to run you through some matches some time when I am on, there are tons of people in game that are helpful and can answer your questions you will most definitely have. Please use or get a mic if you don't have one and enjoy!

Main passives : guardian spirit and gathering storm.
I use non-upgraded spirit blade just because it's cool and can be spammed on NM against eletric imune enemies.
Upgraded FC is great for attack and defense.
PotA for group and put enemies to sleep.
CL is the main ability. Great with a storm belt.

If you are lucky enough to get a Belt of the Storm Pact + Heart of Pride Staff, you will have a blast attacking mobs with rapid chain lightnings and such a low cooldown from Gathering Storm. Puts the AW in a class of his own for survivability, until you get to Nightmare and find the electric immune enemies. Then you have to press the Oh S*** button a lot.

Or bring a friend and sort out who's going to kill who
Me as AW - Okay I got the shield guys and the non-electric mages
Friend as SS - Perfect I got the Drippy Hunchbacks and any electric mages
Lowbie friend on S-Bus - I got the dragon, I just got curse!
See - it all works out

The good thing about the lightning immune enemies are the they attack you with lightning.
With the heart of pride's 50% lightning resist and the 32% lightning resist mod on the armor..... they can't hurt you!
I remember I was a low promote AW playing in NM... ended up at the basement of TR on map with a whole room full of lightning mages... I can't hurt them, they can't hurt me... but the commander killed me with fire. ![]()

So I tried both non-upgraded SP and upgraded SP for fun. They both took about the same amount of time to kill pride demons... which is an eternity. So this morning I got to map 5 and getting a little late for work so I called in help. As I was doing my swong swong swong on a pair of pride demons.... Gekko came in with his reaver and the pair went from full guard to 0 hp in 0.5 second.
So "bring a friend" > SP or Upgraded SP. ![]()

I tried upgrading SB once and only once. The problem is that due to the animations it feels like it takes the same amount of time to swing once as it does 2 times. Cillian does that Baseball bat 'swinging for the fences' pose like he is posing for his rookie card and won't snap out of it. That and it seems to line up in my rotation better at its regular accumulation rate.

Yeah I feel the same. Because there is a delay between switching from SP to basic attack, you are not really doing more damage when you have to recharge SP after every hit. And if you don't recharge it.. might as well just have the normal SP. This is also because my AW is wearing storm pact belt, so even normal SP is charged really fast.

Sleeping enemies with the Heart of Pride / Stonefist combo followed up by MB for a Noghtmare combo was lots of fun. There were a few times I wished I had the higher single target DPS from SB, but overall, I felt I was doing more damage to more enemies with the AOE Nightmare combo. Being able to Panic multiple enemies was handy, and the Reaver that was with me was loving it.
If you have HoP, I suggest giving this s try, it's lots of fun.
