When the Dwarven army leaves Orzammar to help fight in that final battle, did the soldiers then become "castless" or whatever? Since they left the underground and all that? And also, is it the same deal for those who built all those impressive statues above ground?

I got into this train of thought because I did a rerun of DA:I and in the "The Descent" dlc/quest the Dwarven Shaper is avoiding the sun/light at all costs and mentions that if she looks at the sky she will loose her position and cast etc.

Hope this made any sense =P

Thanks

You have to get special dispensation from the Assembly (and/or the King - off the top of my head I don't recall if it's one or both) to come to the surface without losing your caste. I think there's something about it in World of Thedas, but I can't check right now.

I thought it was just Legionairres that showed up. They've been cast out already so...no biggie.

Pretty sure that only a few of the Legion of the Dead join, and this after a persuasion check or something. So in the final battle it's a mix of normal army and legion (and golems if you get that)

I think is has to do with choice. Dwarves that decide to forsake Orzammar and go topside are castless, but if Warriors are sent I am sure the are honor bound to welcome them back.

To be honest I think this is one of those loose ends where the lore doesn't quite tie up and you have to fill in the gaps.    Normally the dwarves would avoid the surface at all costs since they will lose their caste if they go there.   Yet the group in DAO were specifically sent by the king to aid in the fight and were only able to be sent because you had sorted the succession issue.   I recall they weren't just Legion of the Dead, so you have to assume that because they were honouring an agreement with the Wardens to supply aid, this was extenuating circumstances and they would be accepted back without any loss of status.     Otherwise that would have meant Orzammar losing a considerable chunk of their warrior class, which would make little sense, from a survival perspective if nothing else.

Well most of the dwarves forced to the surface are casteless - which means they're assumed to be rightfully born there and descended from criminal scum, or actual criminal scum. They're surface dwelling cos scum.

The warriors sent to face the blight are ordered to war not criminals. Seems clear to me.

Since the after the first game I felt like the Dwarves were an after thought in the series, they don't really have a place or story in DA2 or DAI with the exception of Varric they seem to fall to the wayside as a whole and being a Dwarf protagonist in the latter two has an odd feel to it.

Just seems they've become forgotten even though they are always living whit the blight critters.

The whole point about the main dwarf society is that you don't get to see it much because it is underground and located in a few specific places because the rest of the Deep Roads is overrun with darkspawn.  DA2 was located in the Freemarches where there is no current underground dwarven settlement, which is why the only specific dwarven connection underground is the ancient thaig.    All of our dealings with Corypheus and his followers are on the surface and again nowhere near the northern part of Ferelden where the entrance to Orzammar is.   Have you played the Descent because the dwarves become a whole lot more significant there.

Surface dwarves don't seem so distinctive because they have adapted to society on the surface in order to survive.   So they just crop up randomly on your journeys without having a distinctive culture of their own.

If DA4 is set in Tevinter and northern Thedas then there is going to be scope for getting some interaction with dwarven culture again.   There is the Ambassadoria in Minrathous, dwarven embassies (all underground) in the major cities and Kal Sharok over on the edge of the Hunterhorn Mountains on the border with Orlais.    I hope we are going to be able to visit Kal Sharok because there have been strong hints that they are not like other dwarves, having had to go to extreme lengths to survive after being abandoned by Orzammar.
