I felt like the preset Shepard (Dutch model) had better subsurface scattering and more detail than a shephard you created urself. Is there any validity to this?

do you see there is more detail to the skin. why is that? and will it be different this time around?

Yeah Sheploo looks more detailed than anything I have come up with over the years.  I still prefer custom Shepards though to make them my own.  Same thing with Ryder I will just customize whatever kind of Ryder I make.

Seems unlikely (for MEA) given the Frostbite CC.

In DAI, the 'default' protagonist was simply vanilla Face 1.

Not that I disagree due to the capabilities of the Frostbite engine but a male model was actually used for default male Shepard.  In DAI I think it was just random default faces they came up with and we just tinkered around with the presets.

Yeah preset black guy was my fav. Reign in his duck lips (seriously Bioware stop doing that), switch his voice to John Curry, good to go.

The Vanderloo face model was a higher quality face model like all the other human party members. You don't see it as much with ME1 though.

I can't imagine it wouldn't be. It'd be a waste of the engine if that weren't the case.

I would not be surprised, if the default Shep has higher resolution textures.

Sheploo's face was more detailed than the rest because it was a scan. It's the same reason you can't replicate him using the in-game CC. His face is literally 'unique'.

The extra detail is the main reason why I prefer Sheploo over nearly every custom male Shep I've ever seen.

I never bothered with custom male Shepards. They look like ass next to those superior textures. More importantly, that voice and that face go together for me.

Same here. I used Sheploo for my MaleShep. Couldn't come up with a decent custom one since the CC evidently wasn't that good.

Well...of course? A face scan is going to allow for a lot more detail. I still prefer playing with the CC, though.

Yeah, I still prefer the character creator over a non-editable default. That's just what I prefer, of course. I am annoyed whenever a non-editable default has features that were not avaliable for custom characters such as freckles.

Largely by virtue of the fact that few of us worked long enough to give the custom Sheps as much detail.

I know it wasn't possible, but starting with either the default versions of Shep and being able to personalize them from there would have been perfect.

Agreed, I could never make one that looked that good so most games I stuck with the default.

It does look better (because it's one design, instead of a combination of customizable elements) but I don't think Mark Vanderloo ever sat down in a studio and had his face scanned or anything, they just modelled Shepard after him. When ME1 came out, Vanderloo was already quite a bit older than the photos Shepard is based upon.

Any professional 3D artist can recreate the face of a real person with enough high resolution photos taken at many different angles under the same diffuse lighting conditions. There probably is tech that exists that can scan a head in three dimensions but i don't think that is what they did here.

The reason he looks more detailed is because the real-life photos are projected onto the mesh whereas the CC textures looked like they were painted by hand or the photos used were of someone with very bland skin with no detail (or they removed any detail afterwards to give you a "blank slate") Couple that with models that had no character in their facial features and you end up with a very generic looking face.

It's not clear to me why we didn't get better skin textures for the PC seeing as how the game could support them. They could still use the bad textures for the NPCs to save memory etc.
