Bows vs. Crossbows (Which is better?)

I enjoy playing ranged characters - especially archers. As such most of the time my PCs main weapon of choice is a bow and arrow. Though replaying Origins has caused me to take some interest in possibly using a crossbow instead. (As it fits in better to my own backstory of my Warden.) Alas, the crossbows don't seem to fire as quickly and seem to have a higher miss rate than a bow. That being said these are fairly low tier crossbows, and I'm wondering if some of the higher tier ones are actually more effective than a bow.

So, to all my fellow ranged rouges: which did you prefer? And if you feel so inclined to answer, which bow/crossbow was your favourite from the game?

Crossbows unfortunately are pretty much useless. In addition to firing much slower than bows, they get absolutely NO damage from attributes. A 9999 strength 9999 dex warden will still do 8 damage. It doesn't help either that there are none with particularly good enchantments.

For rogues, I tend to use bows.  The Sorrows of Arlathan seems to be the best that a PC can get.  It's equal to Marjolen's Recurve which only Leliana can use.  You can also get a good one made by the elf merchant Varathorn in the Nature of the Beast quest.  I tend to use cross bows as a secondary weapon for warriors since they require strength rather than dexterity.  Give the warrior one or two bow skills and you're all set.

For the same level, crossbows have longer range and do greater damage/more armor penetration than bows, but take longer to reload.  (Just as in real life)

For the rogue, stick with your better bows.

I never use crossbows.

A quick look at the wiki suggests the Imperium Crossbow you can steal in Lothering is the best in the base game, and the Antique Warden Crossbow dropped in the first area of Soldier's Peak is the best in Origins overall (once fully upgraded).

Imperium Crossbow

Damage - 12.80

Crit - 3.20%

AP - 11.00

Range - 52

The Sorrows of Arlathan

Damage - 9.60

Crit - 1.80%

AP - 8.80

Range - 46

Its base stats are stronger than any Origins longbow, even stronger than Awakening longbows, but other than "Increased Damage vs Demons" it has no special effects (and as was said earlier, gets no bonus from stats). Crossbows seem to be a low-level stepping stone until you can get your stats boosted or special talents (Lethality) learned.

The Antique Warden Crossbow has Rapid Aim, though, and you could always wear the Repeater Gloves.

Also apparently the specialty bolts are stronger than the specialty arrows.

I think I'll try it with a Dwarf Commoner, see how that goes.

It is too bad that what capn233 says is probably the best suggestion. Crossbows, the same is true for short bows, just make sense from a role playing point of view. There are no good ones in the game! It is very sad that the weapon distribution in the game is not as balanced and various as other parts of it. The Sailor Crossbow can be bought in Lothering is probably the best, at least as long as you do not have the Warden's Crossbow from Soldier's Peak. The Dark Moon is the best short bow damage wise. Pretty good as well is the Fox's Bow which can be obtained early, Redcliffe Armory, and needs something like 25ish Dexterity. I usually use simply a Scout's Bow due to the rapid aim feature...

...looking at long bows though, you cannot make up your mind which one is better: Falon'Din, Far Song, Mage's Eye, Spear Thrower, Sorrow of Arlathan, or the Wolf Killer, plus all the "normal" ones Antivian Longbow, Scout's Bow....

So, I scooted through the DC origin, Ostagar and Lothering, hitting level 7 before leaving. Got the Imperium Crossbow, then went straight into Return to Ostagar.

Dwarf Warrior

Normal Difficulty

Rapid Shot active.

Battledress/Dwarven Warrior's Belt (+1 str/armor) equipped.

Powerful and the first six archery talents taken, no specialization.

Stats:

31/22/10/10/14/15

The tier 7 Imperium Crossbow is hitting for ~18 damage a bolt, while the generic tier 2 Darkspawn Longbow (+1 damage/-1 dex) I just picked up is getting ~22 an arrow. Imperium has slighty better accuracy, but Darkspawn fires faster.

...it's not looking good for crossbows.

Yeah, the lack of attribute bonus is what kills them.

I had a 2H Warrior save from just before going to Redcliffe to start the endgame, so I bought the Ancient Warden Crossbow (tier 6, +1 damage, Rapid Aim) and a generic Darkspawn longbow (tier 2). The Warden had 57 strength, 21 dexterity so that was the best bow I could equip.

The crossbow was doing ~25 damage a shot, the bow ~31. Since I didn't have any archery talents, Rapid Aim was very nice; otherwise the only advantage was the far greater range.

I dunno, I think that settles it. Other than as a backup for a 2H Warrior who doesn't have any dexterity, crossbows are inferior all-around. Disappointing.

My dual weapon Cousland warrior had high dex, so he was able to use bows and arrows as well. His accuracy and damage were very good. But warriors like Sten or Oghren, or even Alistair all used crossbows.

A crossbow is good for warriors with low dex, as well as Arcane Warriors with no dex if you want them to use projectile weapons.

Crossbows use bolts. Knockback Bolts are devastating, as are Explosive Bolts.

So there is definitely a place for crossbows in this game.

Longbows take strength as an attribute in their damage calculation, so they end up doing more damage whenever strength is high.Arcane warriors would then benefit more from longbows than crossbows. Also, Arcane Warriors are better off with a staff than any sort of bow.

The one thing I want to try with crossbows now is kind of a toolkit approach - enable the unobtainable ones and then cycle through them depending on the foe.

Circle Tower? Imperial Crossbow (Increased vs Demons)

Deep Roads/etc? Dwarven Defender (+6 vs darkspawn)

Light armor? Nugbane (+3 damage)

Heavy armor? Precision Recurve (+1.5 armor penetration)

Like swapping enchantments, but without having to go back to camp. Probably not something to try for your solo Nightmare no-potions run, but could be a fun mix-up for archery.

So for the benefit of future players who might be looking up info about crossbows...they really are as bad as people say.

However, if you use this: http://social.bioware.com/project/669/ fix so they get a damage bonus from Dexterity, they actually become usable. I imagine the high-level longbows will still outclass it, but using the crossbow has been the least painful "archer at ostagar" segment I've done. The dex bonus gives enough of a boost that the crossbow's better stats and huge range can come into play, instead of being totally overshadowed by DPS.

With 25 dex (21 base, 4 from battledress), my tier 2 generic crossbow is doing about 22 damage a shot in the Tower of Ishal with a level 4 Warden, to compare with the stats upthread.

Interesting.  I wonder why they went with dex though.

It just logical, you only use strength to draw the crossbow, but don't need to maintain it unlike bows, the string will stay draw at the grappling hook. In some real life crossbows you don't even need strength because of the mechanism, but it sure a slow rate of fire

My crossbow-wielder is a City Elf. Obviously it's a bit of out-of-game-mechanics roleplaying, but I imagine the first time she pulled the trigger on the crossbow Duncan lent her and that bolt speared a guard in the heart, she fell in love.
