NOTE: I haven't played IB as a standard member of a party since Trespasser came out. I've adjusted the build for Trespasser, but this build has not been tested by me in an actual playthrough. YMMV. I have used all the non-Reaver parts with Blackwall and Cass, so I'm confident about all that stuff.

IRON BULL 2H, AI CONTROLLED

This build is very un-Reaver. It barely uses anything from the Reaver tree, favoring a more tanky build for The Iron Bull. Since the AI controls IB all the time for me, I don't trust it to get the Devour/Dragon Rage/ROP balance right, so I don't even bother with it. Plus, those would take up 3 active slots I'd rather use on 2H and Vanguard abilities.

You can of course also use it for your Inquisitor. I've added Inquisitor-only abilities as appropriate. However, I think @Gya's Rage'n'Roll build is superior for an Inquisitor, so please use that: http://forum.bioware...uild-ragenroll/

The build is broken down into stages:

Pre-specialization: My core warrior build, can be used for any warrior.

First respec for Specialization: After the specialization is obtained, a respec is highly recommended to pick up Reaver passives right away.

Full build: The is a fully operational AI Reaver build with the minimum number of ability points.

Rationale for each stage is given in post #2. This post just has the raw point spends and actives, for the sake of brevity. The Pre-Specialization point spend is in level-up order.

------------------------------

Recommended Race: Qunari, Dwarf or Human (for an Inquisitor)

RATIONALE FOR THE BUILD

The basic tactic for this build is to tank and take hits like a Champ and stay standing. It is very un-Reaver. It really only uses the right hand passives and Devour from the Reaver tree, though you are free to add Dragon Rage once the full build is in place. It's just not going to be as effective on AI, so I don't bother.

Q: Why Qunari, Dwarf or Human? (for an Inquisitor)

A: Qunari gets 10% physical resistance and Dwarves get 25% magic defense, which helps you survive the early game. Human gets an extra ability point, which gets you to your build goal sooner.

Q: Can you explain the Pre-Specialization Build Active Abilities?

A: Keeping in mind that the intent is to have Iron Bull run by the AI at all times, spamming Horn of Valor/Fortifying Blast gives guard on hit to the whole party. What's not to like about that? Sure, it means you don't get all the cool 2H abilities in the first couple of hours of play after adding IB to the party, but so what? You are focusing on your Inquisitor anyway. IB is purely support at this stage.

War Cry and Charging Bull from Vanguard are standard tanking abilities. It would be nice to upgrade them right away, but you're too short on points this early to indulge.

Getting Pommel Strike/Lightning Jab so early and as a preferred ability has several advantages: 1) It gets you the Flow of Battle passive early, more on that in a bit, 2) Pommel Strike is an incredibly low cost ability that causes Stunned status; that sets up combo attacks for you and your other party members, and 3) Stunned characters can't hit back, increasing IB's survival time.

Q: I hate that IB's Grappling Chain pulls my Inquisitor's target out of range!

A: That is a real problem. If it bothers you too much, disable Grappling Chain and take it out of the active loadout. Put Whirlwind in instead, since it's upgrade has a similar effect to one of the upgrades of Grappling Chain.

However, Grappling Chain/Give Them The Boot + Mighty Blow (either upgrade) is super fun. If you ever control IB before specialization, I highly recommend giving this combo a try. It's hilarious.

Q: Can you explain the Pre-Specialization Build passives?

A: I already mentioned Flow of Battle. As soon as you can, start buffing IB's critical chance stat through crafting. This in turn reduces cooldowns which increases IB's DPS.

The rest are incidental in getting to actives.

Q: Can you explain the Reaver spend in the First Respec For Specialization Build?

A: Again, since IB is on AI and because I want him to survive as a tank, I avoid most of the damage buff from low HP mechanics. Instead, I just want to buff his damage through Reaver passives not related to low HP, and to get Devour, for healing. I do not put Ring of Pain (RoP) in the loadout, so forget about the buffs from that. In fact, make sure RoP is disabled in the AI -- I'm never sure if the AI will use abilities that are not in the loadout or not, some people claim that happens. I don't want to waste stamina on it.

Q: Why no focus ability? Why not take Rampage?

A: I have nothing against Rampage, I just can't afford an active slot in the loadout nor a skill point for it. If you really want to have a focus ability, you can swap out one of the other actives and take it instead. Heck, you can swap out Devour if you really want Rampage. That does the least damage to the rest of the loadout gameplay.

Q: Why so many points in 2H?

A: Personal preference. I like the Earthshaking Strike animation, Whirlwhind/Vortex of Steel animation, Pommel Strike for combos, etc.

Whirlwind/Vortex of Steel is particularly good if your IQ is a mage with Fire Mine. Set a Mine on IB, let him Vortex in a bunch of mooks, kapow!

Q: Why so many points in Vanguard?

A: They are all great tanking abilities. Livid in particular.

Plus, Charging Bull/Gore and Trample, if used effectively, gives you free shots all over the place. You can Charge just 2 steps to get a free shot at a demi-boss. Just 8 seconds later, you can do it again!

I just started a new play-through.  I'm going to play a 2h elf warrior that is mad with power.  I'm going to use IB as my running mate.  I like the info here.  What do you suggest for Amulet, Belt, & rings?

Are you going to spec IB for 2H? Regardless, you can split some of the spamming duty between them. If IB spams Horn of Valor, you can take that out of your build and use the points for something else, like the left side of Vanguard.

I personally never run with two warriors, I always go warrior + archer + 2 mages, but as long as you have one archer and one mage, you should be fine.

For accessories for your elf 2H, I'll break down into early or late game.

Early

  • Any Guard belt
  • Any Attack ring
  • Enhanced Horn of Valor ring (for the warrior spamming that ability)
  • Any Stamina, Strength, or Lifeward amulet (I prefer to use Cooldown amulets on rogues or mages)
  • Lacking the above, anything that buffs sunder, armor penetration, and if Trials/Walk Softly, barrier penetration

Late

  • Enhanced, Superior or Superb versions of the items listed in Early
  • Belt of Urgency (although this is better on IB, due to Reaver mechanics)
  • Enhanced Horn of Valor ring (for the warrior spamming that ability)
  • Enhanced (2H ability) ring, e.g., Enhanced Mighty Blow ring
  • Ring of Assault
  • Any critical chance or critical damage item, once the rogue and mage are fully buffed for crit
  • Amulet: Andraste's Sacrifice
  • Amulet of Renewal
  • Amulet of Second Wind
  • Amulet of the Warrior
  • Any Trespasser-only amulets, like the Amulet of Physical Immunity

Yep, I'm going to drop HoV from my build.  I'm not sure how my Inquisitor build is going to go just yet.  I love combat roll upgraded, the ability to get up from knockdown right away is very nice.  It also helps me change angles quickly to set up the bowling pins for a charge.

Definitely go with the Rage'n'Roll build linked in the original post, then.
