Bioware, please let us be downright evil in this game.

Backstory tells us how we got there, not what we want to do now. Backstory might not een establish why we did the things we did to end up here.

Backstory can (and likely will) constrain what you can do. You're not a space pirate. You're not an evil bastard who kills for the sake of killing. You're a pathfinder, an explorer, who may or may not have the ability consign lots of aliens to their deaths.

You need to stop living in this odd fantasy world where you ignore the story setup.

ME3 level of ruthlessness seems appropriate to me. Not evil as in stabbing people for the sheer lulz of it, but killing people in cold blood for a (sometimes not that good) reason seems as ''evil'' as Mass Effect should get.

I'm not really into the whole stealing, raping and murdering thing.

Shepard kinda does the first and third things on a regular basis in Mass Effect.

I have complete control over the character as soon as I finish character creation. Otherwise the gameplay is absurd.

I don't ignore the story setup. I just refuse to draw the expected conclusions based on it. If BioWare wants to ensure that my character has a certain objective or a certain world view, they need to make that explicit. And they need to make that explicit before I buy the game.

Why can't we become a space pirate? Just because we start the game as an astronaut doesn't mean that has to define us forever.

For the same reason we can't become a space prostitute paying off crippling debt from betting on varren fights, or simply become a vet/hydroponics pot farmer that lives on a compound on some barren moon. Won't someone please think of the zots?

That sort of character design would havewould have totally worked in KotOR.

Headcanon FTW.

If we were worried about zots we'd stop wasting them on non-interactive cinematics.

The sheer amount of headcanon that would be required to make this work in KotoR would also make it work in DA:I or Mass Effect 3.

Would putting native species in reservations or just getting rid of them and then taking their planets would be considered evil? This is a choice that could work in this setting.

I don't think it would work in ME3. ME3 has too many instances of Shepard acting without any input from the player. Ensuring that the headcanon was consistent with that behaviour would only be possible in hindsight, and that's not acceptable.

Rationalization is an unforgivable failing in people.

Not really - not unless we had overwhelming technological superiority, and even then, it seems that the reason why Europeans succeed in doing such a thing in North America had to do a lot more with disease. Note how colonial powers did not even come close to doing this in e.g. China, Japan or India.

I think there is every chance we will get to be evil in a conquering imperialist way. Being able to "go native" to stop the milky way coalition from harvesting various planets could be done well. I do hope the general concept, if not that exact scenario, is explored to some extent,

No, you just don't give a rat's ass about story. You want a sandbox game. You're not going to get it.

We've had these same kind of discussions before, and you tend to embrace a very illogical viewpoint in general. It's your way (which isn't going to work in a game like MEA), or nothing -- for you anyway. Ironic thing is, even though you'll get very little of the BS you want, you'll still probably buy the game and then complain. Come May next year or so, I can just hear it...

On top of there being ambiguity there for you to work with, you've also told me that human behaviour already isn't predictable or consistent.

So unless you'd like to take those statements back, this shouldn't be an issue.

You could be pretty evil in Skyrim, eating humans, killing innocents for the sake of it, betraying and killing your friends, Fallout, you could sell and trade slaves.

Agree with OP. I want to be over the top crazy. Don't care if it ends with a game over and everyone dies ending. Not everyone wants to role play a character with the same end goal.

I know Sylvius for an RPG fan, it just seemed to me he doesn't want a Sandbox.

I hope not: BioWARE isn't really good at outright evil. And honestly, go play Postal if that's what you want.
