At the time, there wasn't another video game that interested me. I too started with ME2

Had some time on my hands and the Trilogy was suggested to me by a couple of people, so I tried it... same way I start out with most games I play.

My brother bought the game in a sale at a shop that was closing down. He told me it was good so I played it and...it was good.

I played Dragon Age: Origins a couple years back and loved it. Saw that Mass Effect existed, but I'm on PS3, and the first game wasn't out for that back then. I waited, got ME2 on disc in the mean time (but never played because I wanted to start with the first ME) and then kinda forgot about it. Finally downloaded ME1 for the PS3 at the end of 2013 and started playing April 2014. Pretty much constantly playing the Trilogy ever since :) It's super addictive.

I heard and read a lot about the game and how it was great. Moreover, I've always liked BioWare stuff. So I bought a solid copy. I didn't actually play it until much later when a friend gave me a digital copy as a Christmas gift. He was more excited about the fact I was going to play it than I was. That finally made me stop putting it off. Now we fangirl together.

I first encountered Mass Effect early in 2008 on a PC gaming newspage (PC player only, so didn't follow XBox news and didn't even know that it existed). One of the first pictures I saw was these two:

Spoiler

The artwork intrigued me and when I found out that this was a scifi RPG/Shooter made by the guys who gave us KotOR, I started to look into some details of the background story on BW's homepage. After getting my first glimpses of the concepts behind the game and the universe, like the proud but dying warrior race and the Spectres (who at the time sounded like the Jedi, just in badass), there was no stopping me. Pre-ordered the game, the artbook and Revelation. Been with it ever since.

I first got interested in Mass Effect after watching a preview video on GameSpot I believe. My memory is a little hazy, but I think it was of a Vanguard; the video showed Shepard using Lift to lift a Geth unit into the air, then blasting it to bits with the shotgun (or maybe it was carnage). The Geth disintegrated.

That small little gameplay chunk piqued my interest and I bought a copy when it came out. I cannot remember if I preordered it or not.

If I find the time, maybe I can go find that video.

I got ME1 a few months before ME2 got released, though I didn't knew that at the time, I just picked it up because there weren't many decent Sci-Fi game made in that period, and I loved Sci-Fi back then very much. Still do, but less zealous about it.

Like I said in my previous post, my memory is probably hazy and I may be remembering things wrong. But this may be the video here:

Played the crap out of KOTOR.  Saw that the folks that made KOTOR were coming out with a new game.  Picked it up and got sucked in by the setting.

Shortly after it first came out. I was around 12 at the time. Saw my friend playing it at his place and he told me it was made by the same guys who made Kotor 1. I asked my mom if I could get it for Christmas but she made me choose between it and Phantom Hourglass. I may not think too well of the series nowadays but I don't really regret it.

One year ago, a friend bought the trilogy on PS3 and told me "damn, this is good, you're a space lover you NEED to play this game".

I had nothing better to do and it was the sales on the PSN so I bought the 3 games and......... I felt in love for ME1 in less than 2 minutes

Even now, I'm still thanking my friend for his great advice ~ ME forever <3

Late November 2014 but I've been play Dragon Age longer. Not really that impressed at first with ME1 since it became as the earlier games borrowed too much from many existing scifi works that it became too predictable. Was about to abandoned it until Virmire and then the romance. ME2 is fun in the beginning but get stale as the narrative hardly change much on repeat playthroughs. ME3 is what made the game replayable over and over.

I had played the heck out of Neverwinter nights (created own maps etc) and fallout 1 and was looking for something else to play, checked out what else Bioware in 2008 had and the rest is history, ME1 totally sucked me in.

I had rented KOTOR from Blockbuster back in the day, which is how I first discovered Bioware, and loved it. I then got Jade Empire on my birthday shortly after it came out and loved it. So when I found out that the company that made those two awesome games was working on a new IP called Mass Effect, I had to have it. All it took was one trailer for the game and I was sold. Got it the day it came out.

It was after I saw Mass Effect 2 trailer, and the devs said that you would die in the beginning of the game, and I was like "GOD DAMN thats freaking awesome!", so I bought Mass Effect and started playing it, finished it a few times before ME2 arrived and played the sh*t out of that.

Its still my favorite Mass Effect game.

Honest answer? I was at the video rental store with my brother in 2012. I was picking out a game to rent, and he was getting impatient. So I hastily grabbed a copy of Mass Effect 3 so we could go home.

I'd already been playing Dragon Age for years, so I had some idea what to expect from BioWare. That being said I found myself not being quite as immersed as I was hoping for. But what got me was the soundtrack 'Leaving Earth'. I loved it, and of course, had to YouTube it. In doing so I fell down a hole of Mass Effect videos, and decided to go out and buy a used 360 for the sole purpose of getting the original game.

I downloaded the ME2 demo on Steam and enjoyed the style of the graphics, and it ran quite smooth on my then less good computer.  Not just that, TBH.  A mate from work had been going on about it for a while, and my house mate played ME1>2 quite a bit, so I thought there must be some reason they enjoyed it.  I did lol a lot at my house mate though - I'd seen him do certain sections a lot and he'd said he was trying for a particular outcome (which meant nothing to me at the time).  Once I'd finished ME2 with a full ME1 character, and got the whole squad out of the suicide mission, it occurred to me that it was this that he was trying to do.  I asked him if he ever did it.  "No..."  Lots of pointing and laughing ensued because I'd seen him play it a HELL of a lot.  Anyhoo...

Oh, and yea, that also meant I played ME2, then bought ME1, then played through and realised my error, technically ruining my own experience.  Not quite that bad, but you know what I mean.   :)

I had a minor surgical procedure on my back in 2008 and had to stay in bed for a few weeks. My husband (boyfriend at the time) was playing Mass Effect 1 and felt guilty for playing it in front of me because he thought he was hogging the TV. I told him I wasn’t too interested in the game and would read while he played, but I found myself putting my book down and chiming in every time there was a decision for him to make. Once he got to Virmire with Wrex, I knew I had to play the game myself and I instantly fell in love with the game.

In around 2009 I saw the E3 demo of the game, it wasn't enough to get me fully involved in it so I watched a walkthrough and I was hooked. Bought the game the next day, spent half the day trying to fiigure out why the FPS was so low and the game kept crashing (that was the day I discovered drivers (I was 11 at the time)).

Played the game repeatedly for a year then I got hugely giddy when they released the ME2 demo. Oh and it conquered my Oblivion addiction....by making me addicted to Mass Effect.

In 2011 I heard about this game called Mass Effect 2 that was winning all possible awards. Several people recommended it to me: "If you like stuff like star trek and blade runner you´re gonna love this game."

At the time I was done with videogames. But after Street Fighter IV and the Mortal Kombat I was considering if I should purchase a new console. I watched some gameplay footage of mass effect 1 and 2 on Hathur´s channel. The old longplays are no longer there. They had bad frame rate and were on  very lowres. Since them they have been redone with better equipment and using mods to improve the graphics. I was able to play ME 1 and 2 on a friend´s Xbox 360 and I almost ended up purchasing one myself. I had the money already saved in order to make a purchase, but then I changed my mind and decided to go with a gaming PC. Initially I played the trilogy on a I5 3330 using a gtx 650. It was ok for the trilogy. Nowadays I play using 4K graphics by means of mods on a newer I5 with a 980ti extreme.

More important than "why did you start playing" is why do I keep playing it from time to time? Well, it´s such an interesting game in terms of lore, characters, mechanics... I don´t think there are many games with this much replay value.

When ME3 first came out, a friend of mine bought it for me. He was a fan and wanted us to play it at the same time, to see my reaction to it and to compare choices. But since I hadn't played the previous two games I couldn't really get into it and stopped.

Later this same friend recommended DA: Origins to me, which I loved. So when I found out that Mass Effect was also made by Bioware, it renewed my interest. I bought ME1 and ME2, and since I had some time off I played the entire trilogy within a few days. I was hooked.  ^_^

Mostly because I was a Kotor fan. I didn't get it right away though, since it was Xbox exclusive at first. Took a couple of years to get a 360. That was about a month before ME2, so that's what finally convinced me it was time to play.
