I've lost count how many times I've played the game and I have always romanced Dorian. This time, to mix things up a bit, I told him that I understood if he needed to go back to Tevinter. Usually I say I need him to stay with me. Then in Trespasser, they still seem to be sort of still together, according to Dorian's letter. But when I go to meet Dorian and Lord Cyril, there is no greeting kiss or even a heart option.

 

I felt like I'd been punched and I was almost afraid to hear the conversation about him going back to Tevinter. That conversation seemed to go the same way as usual though, with him saying "You are the man I love." So why was there no heart option or kiss option when we first meet again?

 

Is it really based on my earlier conversation choice?

Yes, it is based on the earlier choice. Or, well, that is what has been assumed by Dorian-mancers, and I think it makes sense, logically. Taking that option has him returning to Tevinter sooner, rather than later, so you haven't actually seen each other for a couple of years and have been subsisting on letters. It seems to me that it's not unreasonable that an initial first meeting might have some hesitation. But that does fall away and you get the next conversation as normal, and then his emotional reaction when you go through the last eluvian; there is no doubt about his feeling.

 

I thought it was a good way to show variation for that choice.

Ah, that makes sense then, that their reunion is a bit awkward at first. I'll know not to pick that option in future I missed my welcome back kiss!
