When my Lavellan finished her first combat with Cassandra at the temple of sacred ashes, she said, "Do you think I need a staff to do magic?" or something like that, and that one line made me think of this. Mages who no longer used staves to fling energy, or cast spells, but rather wore fist and feet wraps, or cestus with arcane wards, who could fight in close range melee or fling bolts of elemental energy from afar.

I know, I know, it sounds like Avatar the last airbender, or some wuxia chinese drama, but hear me out. The Qunari are perhaps the most advanced society in Thedas, their understanding of the physical & mental sciences likely eclipse that of other nations. They have invented things like nerve gas, and Bull makes mention of psychological torture being used to condition or re-educate members of the Qun. Even with regards to martial prowess the Qunari seem to place more effort in training both Military and nonMilitary personnel in combat, in a sense the Ben Hassrath are like a secondary fighting force, but more subtle or covert. It would seem to me they would be a great fit for having developed the physical principles behind what we know as the "Martial Arts." What if a mage who was hiding his abilities decided to learn this fighting style and eventually defects from the Qun and began to develope it into a Wuxia style mage specialization in which it was similar to what was mentioned above.

.......Look I just want my Kung Fu Mage Elf... give it to me! lol

Saarebas don't use staves, so there's that precedent.

But why would you require a kung fu style class to be a mage? It's not like warriors don't have mystical powers, consider Templar and Reaver.

If you want a Grand Master of Flowers type character, make it a warrior with some mystical powers, particularly for the focus Ultimate.

It's not like BioWare hasn't done a Spirit Monk before.

Jade Empire is really fun.

If they could make it work in Frostbite, why not. :)

I really don't want yet another reiteration of Arcane Warrior or Knight Enchanter. Mages seem more likely to not carry swords or any type of weapon other than a staff, and this specialization would allow them to even forgo that. It's be a long tradition in fantasy anyway that there was always some kind of martial disciplined mage order to, some used weapons and armor, some used bare fist/feet. Aesthetic I like the idea of the mage using some style of "Kung Fu". Also Warriors already have their mystical specializations, Reaver and Templar respectively. Also lore wise it would be harder to explain why a warrior is all of a sudden throwing energy and fade cloaking around the battlefield considering they aren't mages, a lot of the more high fantasy monk like abilities are more akin to magic than supreme martial prowess or talent.

I really wanted to get into this game but i just couldn't figure it out, and after awhile it became annoying so i stopped playing. I think im going to give it another shot, but it would be great if they brought their current big budget talent and made a new Jade Empire.

I'm playing it at the moment and while I'm sometimes a little confused (e.g. when it takes me a moment to get, that my current opponent is immune against my current fighting style and I have to switch) I really like the game so far. :)

I'd buy a Jade Empire II in Frostbite at once, they even could keep the fighting system, idc.

I recommend saving your upgrade points for the following styles:

Support - Storm Dragon or Paralyzing Palm: both allow you to stun any enemy not immune to support styles, which is most of them. You can stop enemies from ever being able to attack you.

Weapon - Double Axes: you can upgrade them so they use no focus, making them absolutely beastly. (I think you can do the same to the first sword style you get, but if you upgrade it to a better one it uses focus again). You will also decapitate enemies with the axes, which has no gameplay benefit but looks cool.

And keep in mind that you'll have enough points by the end of the game to fully upgrade 3 or 4 styles completely, so pick four you like and plan accordingly.

I rarely use Support styles at all, I do have Paralyzing Palm, but I haven't put a single point into it yet.

I read that Double Axes are the strongest weapons, but idk I just prefer swords  (I am using Fortune's Favorite and don't plan to buy the Dragon Sword because of the Focus draining. at the same time no focus makes me switch fighting styles, which I rarely do anyways. *cough*)

Hmm, okay, I mostly use: Fortune's Favorite, Thousand Cuts and Dire Flame. I don't know which fourth style I'd pick, maybe Spirit Thief.

I'm now Lvl 13 in Chapter 3.

Tis the season, nay, the decade of reboots, reimaginings and rebrandings for video games. Why not JE2:Revolution?

i play with a 360 style controller, and i hate how the bumper buttons serve as directional steering buttons. Left makes you turn right, and right makes your turn left and i can't seem to find a good work around for it, the best i can do is make looking left and right the same as moving left and right but that seems to have its own problems.

I play with KB/M so I can't say anything about that, but I'm annoyed that the mouse movement makes my chara turn. Outside of cutscenes and the Stats screen I see my PC only from behind.

Here an in-game screenshot.

Spoiler

I can't even zoom out.

Portrait? Do you mean Black Whirlwind? He's a companion. This is my chara from the front.

I see my mistake, just finished the first major combat, combat in this game is hard! (at least for me), if they make a sequel i hope they take some cues from the Batman Arkham series in terms how dodging and blocking can work, this is really not my strong suit.

Oh please no, I have Arkham City (for the WiiU) and I dislike the combat there. (I don't like it when a game tells me that I have to click on Button X or I die)

I have no problem with dodging in JE, but that could be because I play with KB/M and just have to click twice on one of the moving keys (WASD) to jump out of the way.

My tipp: you don't need to block in later fights, just jump out of the way, or switch to a different fighting style. Some enemies are immune to some style e.g. Spirits/Ghosts can't be harmed by weapon styles, others are immune to magic etc.

i don't mean the signal mechanic but i do understand what you mean, I mean more along the lines of how evading gives you a chance to plan where you want to maneuver yourself and i guess by extension your opponents. I'm getting better, its a lot to take in, and trying to get used to the controls always takes awhile for me in the beginning.

Ah, yeah I agree.

Believe me, it gets better. At least with KB/M. I'm now dodging without thinking. Jumping over your enemies and attacking them from behind is fun. :)

ugh to get back to the evasion in this game, i can't possibly understand why you have only 5 feet of space to move in during a fight even though your standing in a open field. *pulling on hair.* WTF
