Those biotics can be quite annoying. A bit like the insta-kills in ME3 because it's a cheap way of making the game more difficult.

Well in my case, it's frustrating and I suck.

I found it easiest with a Sentinel and Adept, staying back and sending my team in ahead of me.  Using a sniper rifle and biotics from far away, and pistols up close.

But sometimes I'm like 'screw this' and put it on easy mode.

The ragdoll thing, goddamit that's annoying.  One hit and they kill me why I slowly slide to the ground in a heap, having to listen to the duh-duh-duh music.  Gah.

This is the only time (I think) where the talent Damping shines :D You should take someone with you who has that, hehe. Or lift/throw them before they attack.

I still like the combat even though it can truly be frustrating at times, especially mooks spamming Immunity, but it's not impossible, and biotics are so much fun in this game.

Well the idea is that enemies have similar skillsets to you.  The alternative is an ME3 like system where enemies are woefully inept and ill-prepared for combat for no apparent reason.

I would agree that early game Insanity is pretty tedious when starting with a new character, but the devs supposedly balanced it for NG+.

Getting ragdolled is fairly safe if you're behind cover. Even if you fall down, they can't shoot you.

That's why I liked being a sentinel: Damping, Overload, Throw, shoot.

In mass effect 1 (for me atleast) Taking cover is a death sentence... Youll get rushed down by suicidal AI.

The combat is very different than in later games. If you played ME2 (and possibly 3) beforehand, it´s even stranger. Sadly, this was true for many people, specially among Playstation 3 owners.

There are many irritating things about the combat. The weapons tend to be very similar to one another inside the same class. In 2 and 3, almost every weapon has a very unique feel to it.

The enemies in ME1 are also very fast. The geth "spiders" are a pain. Enemies constantly casting immunity (specially if you´re playing on the hardest difficulties) can make combat take a lot of time.

Not to mention that biotic attacks can make enemies become trapped on a scenario and prevent the mission to proceed. Or ever worse, they can make YOU become trapped.

But one of the most irritating aspects of combat has to do with the fact that enemies behave in robotic fashion till they die. They can be hit with shotguns without even trembling. They can sustain a large barrage of fire from an assault riffle to their faces as if nothing was happening. In ME2 and 3 they behave in a much better way depending on the intensity of the hit.

The only aspect of ME1 that I think it´s worth of praise and that 2 and 3 failed to replicate is the use of exploding rounds. They can make shotguns and specially snipper riffles behave like portable missile launchers.

Don't take cover by hugging the wall, the cover system in me1 sucks. Take cover by running in and out of cover like you would in a first person shooter.

Geth Hoppers (and Snipers) in *certain* missions can really wreck shop if you are not extremely careful.

The combat in ME1 isn't polished.  Particularly the cover system, and the strange physics / line of sight.  You don't suck.

If you enjoy sophisticated combat, play ME1 on easy and enjoy the story.

Cover is absolutely useless in ME 1. It's even a hindrance. The best strategy is to walk left and right to avoid enemy fire. It works against almost all enemies. Walk around corners to break off sniper fire and there you have it. If you're playing soldier, fire just short bursts. I've you've palyed ME 2 before that and used the Revenant, like I did, you're in for one hell of a gameplay change.

Your worst enemies will be Husks, Thorian Creepers, combat drones and biotic rachni. Krogan come close to them, but not quite. A life saver against humanoid enemies is the melee attack. It knocks them on their backs, no matter how powerful. If you have problems with Husks or Thorian Creepers, try to get them to bunch up and then throw the most satisfying grenade of your life.

Melee attack is a great source of knockdown.  Creepers will also pause briefly before the barf all over you, which is helpful for giving them a nice elbow.  Husks are somewhat similar due to charge up on their AOE attack, although it seems like they start it while still moving.

You can also keep your Anti-Thorian gas around after Feros to use on side missions with Creepers.
