Hi there, people.

 

The last time I played DA2 was over 2 years ago. I´ve used the warrior class and the mage class on 2 different plays. One renegade, and the other paragon.

 

And now I intent to do a rogue, with the funny personality. I always had difficulty understanding this kind of response. Is hawke supposed to be ironic and sarcastic even when dealing with tragedies? Or is he/she simply using joy as a way to endure hardships but without meaning any harm? 

 

I can totally understand the hard and gentle personalities, but I don´t think I can grasp what funny hawke is supposed to be. 

 

Also, what companions should I bring along? I mean, not in order to complement a rogue, but to interact better with this funny personality? Would Varric be a good choice?

 

And what about romance? Who would be the best candidate to romance the female Joyce Hawke? 

 

Is there any other recommendation suitable for the funny Hawke? Any particular order of missions or dlc? Any specific group composition?

Varric likes the purple responses, yes, and Varric is humane, he always gives friendship points all "good" choice, and rivalry all "evil" choice (for example returned Fenris to Danarius). Varrick rewards the little lies too.

 

I think, sarcastic Hawke are not always funny, rather ironic, but not cruel (you can choose blue/red answer sometimes, if you feel the purple too rough or frivolous). Hawke are not renegade or paragon. The purple GEM answers are charming, not really ironic.

 

Each companion receives well Hawkes's bad jokes, but in rivalry relationship Fenris sometimes seems angry for it, and Aveline disapprovingly look (but still likes Hawke)...

 

Templar or mage side you choose? It's important for the friendsip/rivalry with companions, but not impossible the friendship for example with Fenris at mage side. At Templar side you must rivalry with Anders, I think, but I don't tryed this yet.

 

Romance? I romanced Fenris (friendship and rivalry too) and Anders (only friendship) with male Hawke, I enjoyed both, but I dont know what the best choice with femHawke. I think Anders better with male Hawke (If you interest the reasons, you can read the thread about this theme).

 

Fenris against mages, Anders and Merrill against templars, Aveline is lawful, then she do not likes the illegal missions, Isabela likes the sarcasm, freedom, and money.

I'm playing a sarcastic femHawke right now.  She's sarcastic most of the time, but I'm happy to chose the diplomatic options when needed, like soothing Merrill after her clan dies, or aggressive if appropriate.  Don't feel that you always need to chose the middle option.

 

Varric compliments very well, and I'd go with an Isabela romance as she's sarcastic herself.  Or maybe Merrill.

 

I've found that sarcasm works best with a pro-Templar Hawke, as her attitude is 'oh for goodness sake these mages are SO annoying'.

Being sarcastic as a mage who's world is falling apart is a little more tricky.

 

I'd always take Varric along as he'll banter with you like a pro, it'll help.  Then decide if you want to be kind and sarcastic, or blunt and to the point (aggressive) and sarcastic.

 

I'd also recommend trying some rivalries, most of them are very good.  I particularly like Isabela's as she starts out thinking you're boring, but then learns a lot from you and grows as a person.

I know people have already given you some pretty good advice, but I figured I'd throw my own out there too.

 

My main Hawke is a fem!Hawke with the Sarcastic Personality. I found her to be pretty funny - though I can understand why some people would consider her rather insensitive. Most of the time Sarcastic options are 'brushing off' the hardships of reality, or coping with horrible events with jokes. (One that has always stuck with me is during the 'First Sacrifice' mission - after finding the bones of a woman, a Sarcastic Hawke can tell Emeric that 'they're probably dead. Unless there's a bunch of boneless women flopping about.' (paraphrasing).)

 

I read somewhere awhile back that DA2 was supposed to be based around the same ideologies as Greek tragedies. In which the events that occur are out of the hero's control and they get swept along. I think Sarcastic Hawke - in terms of this - was supposed to be the, "well darn everything is falling apart and I'm at the centre of it all. Oh well, let's see where this gets me." And unlike Diplomatic and Aggressive Hawke, Sarcastic Hawke doesn't fight against the winds of fate as much. Or at least, that's my ten cents.

 

Sarcastic Hawke is probably the best for the DLCs though (especially Mark of the Assassin - which is a pretty silly DLC in itself). That being said it's been a long time since I did a Diplomatic PT of any kind, so maybe I'm forgetting some hilarious moments.

 

Personally I don't think class matters all that much. The biggest difference being the Carver/Bethany situation. I will say that I did love the relationship of Sarcastic Hawke and Carver though. Whereas I think Bethany works best with Aggressive Hawke. I like the contrast of angry younger brother/lighthearted older sibling, and angry older sibling/naive younger sister.

 

For companions I'd say Varric and Isabela are the most interesting with a Sarcastic Hawke. (Though 3 rouges in your party might be a bit of a tactical weak-point.) I'd bring Bethany and Isabela out a lot together in Act 1, given that they have some pretty hilarious dialogue with one another. I'd stay a bit clear from Aveline, as if you play an exclusively Sarcastic path you'll probably end up in the grey zone with her (not friendship - and not rivalry). And if you're not planning to side with the Templars that kind of placement can be rather unfortunate. I don't think Fenris and Anders actually change that much with a Sarcastic Hawke - as most of their approval is based on Mages/Templars, so take them out when you wish. Merrill can be pretty sweet with a Sarcastic Hawke, as she doesn't always understand Hawke's jokes. And - if you have him - Sebastian probably isn't the best choice for a Sarcastic Hawke either. For the same reasons as Aveline.

 

Romance depends all on who you're supporting, and what alignment you wager your Hawke to have (lawful/chaotic/etc). I'd say Sarcastic Hawke by default has a _______ Neutral alignment, but that still doesn't narrow it down too much. If you're going Pro-Mages romancing Fenris can be pretty fun, though his Friendship path isn't too shabby either. Isabela is probably (in my opinion) the best pick for a Sarcastic Hawke, because their personalities mesh so well. Merrill I think works a bit better with a Diplomatic Hawke, though arguably I've never tried her with a Sarcastic Hawke. Anders I think would be pretty cool with a Sarcastic Hawke, though I think he has more depth during an Aggressive/Pro-Templar run.

Good day! Well explained opinions here, it was enjoyable to read, thank you all!

 

I have just returned to DA II after 2 years break and few days ago completed the game as the sarcastic male Hawke and would like to share my experience as well. Firstly, was enjoying that style all the way, and as my previous character was Diplomatic/Helpful fem Hawke who was just way too kind, way too understanding, way too good, and kinda... boring at times.With sarcastic Hawke you can pretty much crakc jokes here, there, everywhere, like there's no tomorrow. It felt like, and I was playing as a mage, when the world is tearing itself apart and every person who isn't a mage, gonna hate you for your nature, your Hawke is just accepting it and rather leting all go, than fight and just keeping positive, unique vibe around. Like you can choose to be happy no matter what. That's what I felt. From the very beginning, where you have to work your way to Kirkwall and be in basic slavery for a year, your Hawke will respond like 'What's a year..'

 

Even though you may feel like joking around, not everyone will share your attitude and some people considered me as a heartless a-hole, so you may want to be carefull and when death will be around you may be rather helpful or diplomatic in some cases. Some purple choices rather rude and disrespectful, but I was just fine with most of them.

 

Varric will love everything funny and sarcastiv, and as Catilina mentioned, everything purple. Isabela most likely your second best companion as she will share similar attitude and just loves you. I romanced Merrill and it was funny sometimes to hear her reactions, however sometimes I was helpful and understanding with her in a gentle way, as she may take things rather personally. It was good relationships, though next time I would love to go with Izzy I was witty with my little brother as well most of the time, however again, you should watch the situation and see whether you can offer him help rather than pointless joke. Fenris, after knowing him better, started to get better with jokes so he should fine (again depends on your mage/templar choice and quests)

 

I would play all the dlcs as I found them very well written, fun and challenging. I would say final battle with Meredith way more easier than the final boss from Legacy or mark of the Assassin. I also loved Tallis (voiced by Felicia Day) so play them all, more fun and more experience for you.

But so? That seems his whole life was meaningless? If he fight at the Templars' side, he fight against himself, against everything what he believe in. This is not the same as Fenris fight at the Mage side. I think.

Sarcastic Hawke has some awesome lines that are really funny, but there are indeed a few moments where it's incredibly insensitive.  It's hard to know which you'll get, so I quicksave before every conversation and if Hawke says something awful I just reload and go with the diplomatic response instead.

 

It can be hit and miss, but it doesn't happen that often thankfully.

Lots of good answers already. Just to add to what has already been said, I think the purple lines are meant to be ambiguous a lot of the time, so if you see it as more sarcastic, ironic, or cynical, or a front to hide pain, etc...any of those things can be true.

I see purple Hawke as ideologically somewhere between blue and red, sometimes criticizing both Templars and Mages. That comes out in the end, if you choose the purple response when Meredith and Orsino are arguing. Hawke complains how they both set a bad example for their people.

Purple Hawke considers his/her success to be a combination of "skill and luck" and gets along most easily with Varric and Isabela. But as far as romance I don't think it matters...I like purple Hawke paired with someone a little more serious. Anders and Fenris both seem to pierce through the wall purple Hawke puts up. And so does Aveline, though she isn't a romance.

Yeah, I would agree with that, as sometimes it's just very tricky to get what will Hakwe say with that wheel option dialogue system. Sometimes it's just gets extremelly confusing, as I remember Isabela commenting on my Hawke dating Merrill and there was answer 'Jelaous?' and instead of saying something relating to that, Hawke just said something like 'You know I love only you' or similar. Or that thing where ypu will fight keeper Marethari and then potentially may kill Dalish clan. There was a choice from Hawke 'I'm responsible' and you just should guess whether he takes the responsibility for Marethari's death or for Merrill future. With purple answers it's more often like that and sometimes dialoge line will look like innocent reposnse, and next thing you're already pissed off everyone around you.

Very good explanation, I like that. I've found that often too as sarcastic Hawke sounds more, how to say it, reasonable and understanding of the core conflict, not picking sides, but asking for a peace rather than fighting for ideas that will lead to more pain. Purple Hawke appears to be more wise and wisdom wealding nature for me. You can choose to be sad or you can choose to be happy, and I choose to be happy, he's saying.
