Then people will debate it's quality for years to come, bicker over every design choice and companion character, and measure it against every rpg that follows it for a long time. The same exact thing that will happen if it turns out to be a merely good, mediocre, or poor quality game.

And we'll still have dumb speculative threads asking unanswerable "what if" questions.

I am open to the possibility, but I consider it very unlikely by any well-defined standard you might apply to a video rpg. Even if it is very good as an rpg (and I find even that unlikely), "the greatest" is a hard nut to crack, given the great video rpgs that already exist.

it would have to be as varied in dialogue as the early Fallouts, FO:NV, Planescape: Torment and Arcanum. have a story as compelling and personal as that of the BG trilogy or again, Planescape: Torment, allow characters as varied in ability as your typical TES game, fully implement the three most prevalent gameplay styles (fighting, talking, sneaking) in ways that actually affect the plot and others' perception of your character rather than being cosmetic, and avoid gameplay/story segregation at all times.

How likely do you think is that?

For me that is ME. I believe Torment, Fallouts etc, are really good, but not better than ME.

I think Bioware did the thing that happens sometimes which is solidify an entire corpus of people's ideas/thoughts/desires into one thing that pretty much everyone agrees is very strongly representative of what people want there.

Then thank **** Bioware have finally learned from their mistakes and done the fans justice... but there will always be those who disagree

I hope the game will blow me away ( not literally of course ) with everything. With missions quests environments planets and so on and so forth.

Whether it's amazing-omg-awesomesauce or not, you'll still have people bitching and moaning about every little thing they don't like, even if the game is fun to play. I can't even look up any news on BioWare games without some hostile jerk coming in and complaining about a million things that shouldn't even concern a gamer and have nothing to do with the game's playable value. People have admitted to getting refunds on games just because characters say the F word too much in it.

I don't know how we gauge "best RPG ever" but I can tell you, not everyone will think that way. People will always find something to hate. Some people have wildly different standards than others.

I will be pleasantly surprised and happy, I guess (BG2 is still my favorite RPG so far).

Yup, ME and DA are my favorite RPGs of all time. Bioware would have to really screw up MEA to bump that game off my list.

I would never bother with the word best. I just hope I enjoy it. I haven't made any judgments yet, but I'm hesitant, as I am with all things.

Neither would I. There is always room for improvement even in Bioware's games and they make what I'd say are my favourite RPG's

Last year I wrote this post with my wishes what would make ME:A the best rpg ever, and they all seem confirmed during E3 interviews. I have high hopes. Let's just hope they find a nice balance in open world/sequenced story.

We know what it happens.

First months, BEST GAME EVER.

A year later, ugghhh it's so overrated... (plus) ME3 was a better game, fairly superior (plus) I don't understand why people hated so much ME3...

Three years later: MEA2, I hope it's better than MEA!

Then... MEA2 is THE WORST. MEA was vastly superior game, I really loved it. Ok, it had its problems but at least was MUCH BETTER than this new one...

ad infinitum

We are seeing this with DA2 and DAI

It can't be, it has no toolset.  BioWares Neverwinter Nights is the best rpg of all time.

Well, 'best' is always highly subjective. To me, the ME trilogy was the best RPG experience I ever had so far, and I know many people will not agree with me.

I might like MEA, but of course I won't know if I like it better than the trilogy or other RPGs I love (like Nier, Final Fantasy X, Chrono Cross...) until I've played it. Great if it would become my favourite, if not that's fine too.

Me too

I don't know if it's an unpopular opinion but hell, the best experience I ever had, the best characters, all my PCs, all the feelings, that creativity it gives me everytime I play... <3  <3  <3

Why people hate. Ok lets be honest Bioware writing it's not best not even close most of the time opposite. Why Bioware great is characters. Not exploration, story or game-play but characters. Everyone saying ME3 ending is why ME3 is bad no it's not it have one of worst ending in video games ever but ending is not only problem it's just culmination Problems with ME story already started in nonexistent story in ME2. Me2 again bad almost non existent story, just bunch of great character. And then comes ME3 with deus ex machina from beginning of the game and Tuchanka was fine but latter just worse and worse and I don't even talking about Kailame. Space jesus Shepard stopping 100 years war and Legin must die( How about copy paste or something you know best part about not having organic brain.) you want me cry fine. And later god space brat telling me about problem we just solved.

I miss those old games, with the "big choices" and "visceral combat".

Now it's all "you have to remember to drink water" and "it takes 5 hours real-time to fly somewhere."

GRRRRAAAAAAAAAGH!!! IMPOSSIBLE!! CHRONO TRIGGER ALREADY GREATEST RPG OF ALL TIME!! END OF DISCUSSION!!!!

There's a handful of rpgs that I consider damn near perfect and timeless in their perfection - Chrono Trigger, for example. Objectively, that game is a masterpiece of its era and it still shows today.

YES! YYEEEESSSSSS!!! EXACTLY!!!!

lol not gonna happen. They've been moving further and further away from RPG and more into dudebro ACTION! 'SPLOSIONS!! GRR! ARRR SMASHY SMASH CoD territory with each sequel and game. I will be shocked if ME:A is really, really good. It seems promising so far, but I'm not gonna get my hopes up. Good action game? Sure. Greatest RPG of all time? Hysterical.
